Leder Games | Root: The Clockwork Expansion

This expansion adds an updated version of the mechanical marquise faction from the Riverfolk expansion, a significant and highly improved update that fixes the balance and makes it simpler to actually run it. On top of that, it adds three other factions that are clockwork versions of the Eyrie Dynasties, Woodland Alliance, and Vagabond, allowing for cooperative or single player play against any of the four base factions, or to fill out a game with less players who want more factions on the board to compete against. There are also additional cards that you can use to modify the difficulty and abilities of any of the clockwork factions, which adds additional accessibility for newer players as well as more experienced ones. Overall a very good option, this plus the base game makes for a great starting purchase when learning to play Root.

I’m very excited about this expansion since we’ll mostly be playing 2 player games, and this expansion greatly enhances 2 player experience according to reviews. Had a problem with the shipment, but the seller was very prompt and courteous. He quickly sent a replacement and resolved my issue.

This game is asymmetrical, meaning each player is playing differently and their turns are different. So it takes a while to learn if you don't have someone teaching you (and even if you do have someone teaching you.) That being said, it makes replay-ability VERY good, because you won't get bored - you can just switch characters. It's balanced well, good quality, and a fun one that we've played quite a bit.

This expansion allows for 3 levels of difficulty against A.I. enemies for Root. You can do team games or just mix it up with more "players" when going in at low player count. There is the 4 robotic faction boards, 12 priority tokens (for resolving A.I. action importance) and a few carda for A.I. quirks and difficulty. Though enjoyable the $40 tag seems high compared to what you get in the box for similar pieced items. If you can get it for 30 or less I would say definitely but I would have lpved even a new A.I. only faction and critter meeplea for this price. Compare it to the underground expansion (MSRP 50) and you get new factions as well as a new double sided board and playing variants. A bit of a better deal in my book. The A.I. is challenging and teaming up with other players does add to the game. I will note I enjoy what this expansion offers.

Its not for everyone, and you'll likely have to shuffle about the factions to really hit a stride. However, when you do, DANG this game can slap - people playing off each other, ebbing and flowing from the lead, its a brilliant time. One tip - when someone starts to take off, you GOTTA focus them down - if you aren't comfortable ganging up on a leader, this game is going to end in a quick, uninteresting victory more often than not. There are a few issues that my group is thinking about addressing with houserules as well, but overall, this game is really something else.

Mine is a good condition USED copy, not new as listed. Beware of condition if you're expecting an unopened copy.

The „A.I“ are a nightmare trying to figure out how to play plus your friends just have to assume you’re not cheating. Sadly my least favorite expansion. But still a lot of thought was put into it, just takes time to understand.

Root definitely benefits from having at least 3 or 4 players and this expansion really helps in adding another player or two. Some of the bots are harder to run than others (I'm looking at you Vagabond) but after a few turns it all sinks in and the bots are really well designed, hats off to those involved! I've also used this to play solo, only against one of the bots and they put up a good fight with room to increase the difficulty too. If you love the puzzle of root then I recommend, however you do lose the personal touch that comes from playing against humans so don't expect it to capture that.

Mein Mann und ich spielen meist alleine und da ist man mit dem Basisspiel doch sehr eingeschränkt. Mit der Erweiterung kommt ganz gut Abwechslung rein und es macht Spaß zu sehen, wie sich unsere Spielentscheidungen auf die "virtuellen" Gegner auswirken. :-)

No es la versión definitiva de la expansión. El creador de la misma ha estado publicando a manera de "fanmade" las versiones mejoradas de cada facción e incluso incluyendo las más recientes (lizards, topos, Riverfolk, Cuervos) de manera gratuita en la página de Boardgame Geek, bajo el nombre de "Better Bot Project". Por lo tanto, esta expansión solo me sirvió para tener un manual a la mano (el cual contiene un error gravísimo que se tuvo que corregir para el Daylight de la Facción de los Pájaros Mecánicos (ver en la BGG: "Electric Eyrie Errata") y unos cartones para pegar los stickers que corrigen todo. Lo mejor sería que hubiese una segunda edición revisada y mejorada. En resumen, una expansión errática que puede mejorar pero solo si te dedicas a ello.
