Will this work with kinect?

Yep. My old Xbox disk reader died and it was as expensive to fix. I have the kinect set up and it fired right up. I just pulled the HD from the old and into the new, no issues.

What Does it mean to a technology-illiterate when it says it does not come with a hard drive? Do I need to buy that also and have it installed?

You can buy and install a hard drive for this unit. I don’t use it, nor have I installed it. Unless you are playing on line, and playing a lot of games, you probably don’t need it. You will need an “original” hard drive for Halo 2. It’s cheap enough, get one just in case.
