In retaliation for McCormick discontinuing home style gravy packets, I saved the ingredient list and ventured off to make my own. Mushroom powder, yeast extract, beef base (these seemed to be the flavor entries) I saw nutritional yeast at the grocery store (good on popcorn?) and grabbed it. Quick and dirty is a packet of mushroom gravy, teaspoon pork base (secret ingredient #2), 1 tblsp nutritional yeast, 2 tblsp roux (yes I make roux but use a packet) and 2 cups of water and good googly moogly it’s home style gravy only BETTER. I started putting the nutritional yeast in all of my soups, stews, gravies, stuffing and it’s magical. It lends a savoriness (I am old school and avoid the word umami) I was going to try marmite (also yeast based) but I didn’t want the house to smell like garbage. Nutritional yeast does not have much of a smell, maybe like baked goods but a couple of tablespoons in your savory dishes turns them into a love potion. All of my friends are now adding nutritional yeast to everything except, as it turns out, popcorn salt still wins over yeast for popcorn. My husband “what did you do this time?” Ancient vegan secret!

For my 8 yo granddaughter, who calls this her “special popcorn salt”, this is the perfect nutritional-packed topper for her after school snack. I like it, too! And, it is excellent for mixing into homemade soups for more umami.

Oh man I love this stuff, I put it on everything. I use it like you would use a favorite seasoning. Exceptional quality, taste, texture, it came fresh and non-expired, good value.
