Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 1 [Blu-ray]

Was very happy when my copy of this release finally arrived. I had been hoping for a Blu-ray release of Tex Avery cartoons for a long time. This was worth the wait. The cartoons themselves are great. When Tex moved from Warner Bros to MGM in 1941, he brought speed and fluidity to animation that hadn't been seen before. it's like all the stops were pulled out and no holds were barred. The humor works so well, even today almost 80 years later. I think the key is that Tex didn't have kids in mind when making these shorts. He even stated so in an interview near the end of his life. not to say that these cartoons are Adults Only. Kids can enjoy too. But much was aimed at the grownups. The 19 cartoons in this collection cover a variety of characters from one-shot characters to frequently appearing characters like Screwball Squirrel and Droopy. There are only 4 Droopy cartoons, but there will hopefully be more releases. The restoration on these cartoons is top notch. There isn't a fleck or scratch to be seen. Beautiful color and sound. This is a bare bones release with no special features, but that's ok. There is also the typical Warner brothers disclaimer about how these cartoons are a "product of their time" and may be irreverent or offensive to some, but if you just keep that in mind and enjoy what you see, you'll be fine. This is just the tip of the iceberg. if you have any affinity for Golden Age Era animation, please purchase this volume. It will hopefully prompt Warner Studios to release more of the works of the great Tex Avery.

These are the funny classics I watched as a kid after school in the 70’s and 80’s. Tex Avery is a master at comedy and watching these again was awesome!

Classic cartoons from the 1950's!

So many of us have been waiting for decades to see Tex Avery's MGM cartoons given the treatment they so obviously deserve. Was it worth the wait? YES. These cartoons have never looked this good. Of course the content is exceptional. Zany stuff that's guaranteed to make you laugh. Mr. Avery continues to be my all-time favorite because he created a style that was truly unique and different. Wild, unpredictable, and amazingly self-aware...these cartoons are PURE GOLD. And WELL WORTH the price. Many may not realize that during his time with Warner Bros. Mr. Avery [a] gave Bugs Bunny his personality (including the "What's Up Doc?" line), [b] created the Daffy Duck character, and [c] transformed Porky Pig into the character we all know and love today. Can't wait to see the next batch. Hats off to the folks at Warner Bros. for cleaning up this fantastic collection of classic cartoons.

At long last we get the cartoon Holy Grail. We have waited way too long for a U.S. release of the Tex Avery cartoons. It's too bad it's not a complete box set of all his work like the French box set. But hopefully the sales from this will help to get out the rest. Restored and remastered, I'm sure these are going to be absolutely beautiful. I actually bought a blue ray player just for this release. Can't wait to have it. Edit: Got it out of the mailbox before work today and just couldn't wait to see it. This is how these masterpieces are meant to be seen. In vivid full color and detail. This is a far cry from the dull, often scratchy tv prints that I saw as a child back in the 1970's that the French box set is likely sourced from. The restoration is beautiful and i know this is the way the films looked on the big screen so many years ago. I surely hope the sales from this release will bring forth the rest of the Tex Avery catalog. Maybe we can now wish for a release of the MGM one shots, and the rest of the Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies and the Happy Harmonies. 2nd Edit: Could all the people who are complaining and giving one star ratings to this project because it is released only on Blu Ray please consider this. It seems we are lucky that the project even came to fruition. DVD is about to go the way of the cassette and Blu Ray probably will too, since now it's all about streaming services. A Blu Ray player costs no more than a DVD player, and can play your DVDs too. I bought a Blu Ray player specifically so I can enjoy this . Why can't the negative people do the same? And this is the 2nd time I went the extra mile for Tex Avery cartoons because a few years ago I bought a region free DVD player specifically because I bought the Tex Avery French box set. A true fan and collector should have no problem with doing this. Just saying.

i have always loved Tex Avery’s Screwball Classics as a kid watching them on TV and when I heard that the people at Warner Archive were going to bring the first volume to Blu-ray it was great news as I have been wanting to own these screwball classics for sometime now. These cartoons are just hilarious to watch over and over again even though the content was wrong back then and they are wrong now and were meant for adult viewers and not for kids. But that does not matter to me I just love them and thank goodness they have been restored and uncut and look as good as new. If it is possible to get word to Warner Archive I would like to personally thank them on behalf of all the fans of Tex Avery out there and I pray that that there are more to come.

Hands down, some of the funniest pieces of classic animation of the Golden Age, Tex Avery was one of a kind, a true genius! If you like Tex Avery, then you'll love this collection. I'm happy to say that it works like a treat on my PS5, so that's made it better as I didn't have to panic about picking up a multi region Blu Ray player. Though it has no special features of commentary, only subtitles, it's still a joy to watch this uncut and restored to it's beauty, I never laughed so much in my life, the gags, jokes, stories, everything is guaranteed to make you laugh. PLEASE REMEMBER: These cartoons were a product of their time, so watch with caution. With that being said, do yourselves a favor and go pick up a copy of this masterpiece collection. It'll brighten anyone's day when in the mood for some cartoon classics.

このシリーズは3巻まで出ていて3本買えばTex AveryのMGM時代の短編の大部分は手に入るが、入ってない作品もある。人気作のウルトラ子がも（LACKY DUCKY）やドルーピーの最優秀ボーイスカウト（droopy’s GOOD DEED）やデカ吉チビ助のニワトリ狩り（HENPECKED HOBOES）などが入ってない。どれも差別表現がカットされているバージョンは過去のDVDに収録されていたのでその辺の事情で収録されなかったのだろう。カット版を収録するくらいなら最初から収録しない方がマシという考えかもしれない。しかしTex Averyのソフトを買って代表作の１本であるウルトラ子がもが入って無いのは痛すぎる。Blu-rayなので画質が良いのと英語字幕で台詞がわかるのは良い点だが。ちなみにデカ吉チビ助のアフリカ探検（HALF-PINT PYGMY）は5枚組のフランス盤にすら入ってない。 2巻には特典映像でドキュメンタリーが収録されている。3巻の特典映像はワーナー時代の短編が１本。

Nachdem Tex Avery (1908-1980, damals noch unter dem Namen Fred Avery) von 1936-1941 für Warner Bros. gearbeitet und hier schon zeitlose Cartoonfiguren wie Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck und Elmar Fudd miterfunden hatte, ging er zu MGM und schuf von 1942-1955 in 84 Cartoons seine abgedrehte und völlig überzogene Cartoonwelt. Aus dieser Zeit stammen (mit einer Ausnahme, nämlich "Symphony in Slang", der erst in seiner letzten Phase bei Universal entstand) die Filme der dreiteiligen amerikanischen BluRay-Reihe "Screwball Classics", die sich auch auf europäischen Playern abspielen lassen. Volume 1 der Reihe beginnt in der frühen Phase dieser Zusammenarbeit und präsentiert 19 seiner Kurzfilme mit einer Gesamtlaufzeit von ca 138 Minuten. Daredevil Droopy (März 1951) Bei der Zusammenstellung wurde also darauf geachte, Filme aus der ganzen MGM-Phase zu präsentieren und all seine bekannten Charaktere wie Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, Red Hot Hood und die Wölfe, Spike sowie George & Junior gleichberechtigt auftreten zu lassen. Besser kann man es eigentlich kaum machen. Das Einzige was fehlt, wäre ein bißchen Bonusmaterial mit Hintergrundinfos, das es aber leider nicht gibt. Aber ohne Zweifel werde ich mir die anderen Volumes auch noch besorgen.
