Does the music mode have to be on for you to use the lights?

No, you can choose to use the music mode or not.

Can I screw it in to my ceiling?

It does have a bracket so you could but the power cord is rather short so unless you have an extension cord or an outlet on the ceiling then the cord would not reach a wall outlet.

Does this initially turn on when it’s plugged in? or do you have to press a power button? i’m wondering if i can i use this with smart plug.

OMG!!! there is no switch (at least that I saw). As soon as I plugged it in it was working. It was perfect and covered a huge space in our family room. I told myself I am going to purchase another one b/c for its size, it covered a large area. My little ppl ( kids) went crazy with it at my 2nd year old 's bday party this past weekend.

It is absolutely a gem for around 300 rupees. Brightness is decent. Have different modes to play around. Fun part is its music modes which changes according to the flow. You have to keep the sound output near to the machine for music effect.
