Why so much sugar in these bars? A candy bar like Snickers has less sugar than these.

Sugar provides pure energy, very quickly, which is important in an emergency situation or when out backpacking. This bar is packaged to last a lot longer than a Snickers bar. Wouldn't want to eat a Snickers bar that is 5 years old.

Does the bars contain any milk or peanut ingredients?

Ingredients: Sugar, Vegetable Shortening (Partially hydrogenated soybean & Cottonseed Oils), Enriched Bromated Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Enzymes, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Potassium Bromate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Cornstarch, Wheat Gluten, Dextrose, Desiccated Coconut, Corn Syrup, Contains 2% or less of each of following: Soy Lecithin, Natural & Artifical Flavor, Guar Gum, Calcium Propionate (Preservative) Citric Acid, Salt, Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbiyl, Palmitate, Niacin, Vitamin A Palmitate, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate.

Are these bars easy to chew and do they continue to stay that way throughout the life of the product?

They are not crunchy. They're the consistency of a very firm shortbread cookie, and a little but grainy. I'm not sure how they are after long storage, I've only eaten them soon after production.
