will it hold paper clips?

Cleta - It will. Along the bottom of the unit (it sits on a swivel disk) there are 3 divided sections that will hold loose objects and the "fence" is almost an inch high so they won't fly out. Each of the 3 sections starts at about 2" across and goes 1.5" from front to back anding at 4" across. It's handy but you have to have long fingers to get some items in the somewhat high storage columns. Enjoy! Larry.

About how many pencils would fit in all the compartments?

I'd say roughly 50 in middle and 15 on each of the 2 sides. So around 80 total standard pencils; less for mechanical or pens. The other compartments won't fit pencils. We have only standard pencils in the middle. I didn't count all of them just guesstimated by rows. We use the sides, one for mechanical and one for pens. This is on my kids' desk and they love it, especially how it spins.

There are three "tall" compartments - one large one in the middle and two on either side.
