Most of the reviews address the scent, but how is it as a fabric softener?

Not that im a fabric softener guru haha but it does make my kirkland black t shirts nice and soft.. And my sherpa lined carhart jacket,. I prefer this over all ive tried..

How does this scent compare to the original scent they had years ago, the initial formula?

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking so I'll explain it like this. This is the new Lavender scent and is called Calm. If your referring to the original Lavender scent, which was called Lavender Serenity, they are both a mix of lavender and vanilla and the fragrance is very close, if not the same scent. Lavender is very calming and I love it. If you are referring to the original Downy scent they started with years ago, that scent is called April Fresh and is a completely different scent. There are no similarities at all to this one. The April Fresh scent is still available on Amazon. Look for the pink cap. Hope this helps.

Do you use it with washer or dryer?

I put it in the washer along with my detergent but it's liquid and you put it in on the rinse cycle but since my washer locks until it's completely done I have to add it along with the detergent
