Fast and fine - here's the truth!
I want to correct the false information left in many reviews from people that simply don't understand what they have bought or how to use it. There is nothing wrong with the speed or size of this hard drive, let me explain. A common complaint is that they have bought a 5TB drive and only got 4.5TB. That's how hard drives are made and it has been for decades since they were first designed. Yes, a 5TB drive will only have 4.5TB in the same way a 32GB memory card will only have around 27GB. It isn't a rip-off or a con, that's how they're measured. I've seen ludicrous things like people asking Amazon to send them the missing 0.5 TB in the post (?) or complaining that if they bought 6 apples then they wouldn't expect to only get 5. True, but would you eat ALL of each apple? Even the core? No, there's nearly always a bit of waste in anything you buy. As for the speed, it transfers data at the rate of a steady 121MB per second as you can see from the image I have uploaded. The reason people get lower speeds is that they've plugged it into a USB 2.0 port instead of a USB 3.0. Look for a blue USB port, plug it in there and the speed will be fine! If you have a green port then that's fast too. I've had no issues at all with speed at all, despite this drive drawing all of its power from the PC. People complain about how slow it is when it's plugged into USB 3.0 because it has very low speeds when they're copying lots of files. Again, this is the user not understanding how hard drives work. They will always copy big files faster than lots of small files. Think of it like me tasking you with carrying a big box from one side of the room to another. It may be heavy but it's just one thing to move. Now imagine me tasking you with carrying 100 tiny boxes from one side of the room to the other, being able to only carry one box at a time. It will take you longer because you have to keep going back and forth - just like a hard drive does! There is nothing wrong with this drive at all. It's fast and so small it fits in a shirt pocket. I didn't have to do any set-up at all, just plug it in and off I went. There was the usual Windows error message saying the drive had errors but then when you click to repair the drive" it says it doesn't need repairing because there are no errors! That's a quirk of Windows 10 that I have with every drive I ever plug it. Buy it and enjoy it - it's great!

A new lease of life for my PS4
I bought this WD My Passport drive specifically to use as an external storage device for my PlayStation 4, and it works great for that. As anyone with a PS4 knows, the internal hard drive fills up way too fast with all the massive game installs and updates. This little drive is a lifesaver. Setting it up was a breeze. You just plug the USB cable into the PS4, and the console imediately recognises it as an external storage device. The PS4 guides you through the process of formatting it for use with the console, which takes just a few seconds. After that, you can set it as the default location for all your new game downloads, or you can manually move games from your internal hard drive to this external one. The transfer speeds are really fast, so you can move a big game like Call of Duty in a reasonable amount of time. I have the 5TB version, which is a massive amount of storage. To put that in perspective, the average PS4 game is around 40-50GB, so this drive can hold around 100 of them. It's way more space than I'll ever need, so I don't have to worry about deleting games anymore. One thing to keep in mind is that this is a traditional hard disk drive (HDD), not a solid-state drive (SSD). This means that while it's much cheaper per gigabyte than an SSD, it's also a little slower. I haven't noticed any major preformance issues with games I've installed on it, but the loading times might be a tiny bit longer than if they were on the internal SSD of the newer consoles. But for the PS4, which also has an HDD, the difference is pretty minimal. The drive runs off the USB power from the console, so you don't need an extra power cable which is a big plus for keeping your entertainment centre tidy. Overall, it's a fantastic, reliable solution for anyone who needs to expand their PS4's storage without spending a fortune. It does exactly what it's supposed to do and has plenty of space for my whole game library.

This formatted easily for a MacBook backup drive -
This formatted easily for a MacBook backup drive - which enables Apple's "Time Machine" app to make the contents searchable. The device is small, runs quiet and works well for me if you aren't needing ultra quick access to the contents as the value per TB is about the best for a 'big name' brand disk in May 2026 for a portable drive. Only thing - this comes without a bag - in the past my new external HDDs used to come with a small sleeve to keep the dust and fluff out of the USB contacts. So factor in the cost of that when drawing up your shortlist.

Generally good drives, but picked a bad apple this time.
Price is great for the 5TB size. I already own one external WD 5TB My Passport, hence I bought this one. Unfortunately I got a dud this time. Copying files often ends with an "unexpected error occured" message, and the folder window closes and reopens afresh like the hdd just disconnected and connected again. At times all explorer windows stop responding at once when this device is connected, but task manager shows CPU, memory and drives use each under 20% of their resources. Already lost some files by foolishly moving rather than copying between the drives. Was hoping for another excelent backup drive, but sadly, back it goes to where it came from.

Reliable Storage with Plenty of Space
It’s compact and easy to carry around, which makes it convenient for storing and moving files. The 5TB capacity is a big plus. It’s been reliable so far and works as expected when plugging into different devices. Transfer speeds are decent for a portable hard drive, and it’s simple to use right out of the box.
