It appears to be compressed fine wood chips in a wax like substrate. The tip is coated with red match like stuff that can be struck on the box to light. I light it with a lighter after placing it under a prepped fire, and it works great to start a fire! I love them!

Great charcoal starter

These firestarter sticks work great. I usually break one stick into 3-4 pieces and use to start the charcoal for my grill. They don't have an odor like the liquid starter fluids and work quickly.
