The Perfect Desk Cover
I bought several cutting mats around the same time, but this was the only anti-static mat I got. The mat is very flexible, supple, and it laid flat out first day. No waiting. The ground connection is a banana plug, which is not my favorite choice but does plug into the wall outlet ground lug just fine (USA standard). The white top is getting a bit stained by normal dust and mouse movement; but not nearly as stained as it should be after a year of use. My laptop case feet stick to this mat well and together they prevent any movement. The mat has stayed on the desk for over a year without any creep or adhesion to the desks 70 year old varnish. I have not dropped a hot soldering iron on it, but have set many cups of hot tea on it without any warping or deformation. This mat provides peace of mind when I touch it while standing up out of my desk chair and sitting down (this is when most static discharge zaps would be killing the computer). The mat hasn't shown 'memory' where items have sat on it for a long time and deformed the foam; just wait a few days and the indentations disappear. Another great feature is that the foam of this mat buffers my hard typing without sending every keystroke through the floor and echoing around the house. This mat is the best type of desk blotter you can get!

Because it's a whole lot less expensive than a new motherboard
I'm neurotic about building PCs. No, seriously neurotic. I work on a wooden floor with my wrist strap clipped to a power supply that's plugged into a surge protector, which is plugged into the wall but turned off so that no current enters. Because, I mean, wouldn't it be hilarious if I fried myself on a cheap power supply while trying not to shock my computer? Enter this anti-static mat. Don't get me wrong, I still clip myself to the power supply, but now I clip the mat, too. The coiled alligator clip extends to about 4 feet long before it starts to pull the mat with it, meaning that your ground doesn't have to be right next to you. This frees up table space if you're not weird like me about having your wrist clipped in, too. The mat is a joy to work on. It's soft enough that cases and components sink in a bit and don't slide around, and it rolls back up into a surprisingly small package. I've been using it once a week or so since buying it, and the only way you'd be able to tell is the slight smear from when I had a disagreement with a tube of thermal paste that was sitting on it. It's very easy to clean and keep clean. My only problem with the mat is that it doesn't roll out perfectly flat, but it does settle down when weight is placed on it. There are plenty of flashier mats out there. There are $60 mats that have diagrams for various motherboard sizes and all that fun stuff, but at the end of the day, do you really need a motherboard size grid on your 24"x27.5" anti-static mat? You might, and there are certainly situations where even I could have saved a few seconds by having that instead of reaching for a tape measure, but most hobbyists don't really need that. I'd rather spend my money on the components, not the mat I build them on. This does what I expect it to, and it's cheap. No complaints.

Good value, large size
It does what its supposed to do. And after building my computer its nice to have as a placemat instead of putting my new computer on carpet so in hoping less dust gets in there. I dont know what else to say but its a value product that served its intended 1 time use to protect my investment when building a computer. Consider it a 1% insurance plan when you spend alot of money on building electronics. The size is pretty big so im happy

A great mat and good support
I bought this mat for my electronic hobby work. It is large; easy to use and inexpensive. It does the job I want it to do which is to protect my components from damage due to static electricity. Their customer support is wonderful. I have read the complaints from other reviewers and decided to share my views. This is not an expensive professional item. It is ~26 $ including shipping. For this price it is more than good enough. If you are working with ultra expensive and sensitive items then spend more money and get a professional item! My only complaint is the lack of good documentation. The solution for me was to pick up the phone and call StarTech.com. Their support is available until 11 pm EST. I phoned them around 8 pm last night. Right away a representative picked up the phone. He was obviously familiar with the product and answered all my questions. I will write them here for other users Directions: 1) The mat should be put black side down and white side up. 2) The wire with the alligator clip goes between mat and ground. This is a ground and not your wrist. 3) You should use a separate wrist band and ground yourself. You need one wrist band per person. Another person complained it melts if touched by a soldering iron. All I say is the mat is made of rubber and of course it melts. Please be careful. I figure with normal use it will take a few years before it gets so many melted spots to need replacement. Then I will spend 26 $ more and get another one. Just like I replace my iron tips and other things which wear out. My overall advice is if you use this correctly and don't expect the impossible you will be happy with it.

Well done.
Testing. Need to test with gasoline containers at truck bed.

Anti-static Mat RELIEF!
I sew. I have a lot if electronics plugged in when I see and it seems, I create a lot of static discharge while doing so. From loose thread getting stuck on myself to man made fiber flying and sticking. Until I read up on a remedy, I had no idea that this product existed. And guess what? AMAZON! My first look was here! Problem solved! I unwrapped it (btw, came earlier than expected) put my sewing machine on it and attached the grounding clip and voila! Works like a charm. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone being bothered by static electronic discharge. So, arrived early, perfectly and darned easy to use. Thank you Star Tech!

This is an anti-static mat! This is not a sheet of metal.
As an EE who has undergone corporate ESD training, these reviews make me cringe. For those less experienced, Here are some facts about anti-static mats. First of all, Anti-Static mats are not conductive, they are static dissipative. There is a difference. If we wanted a conductive surface, we would use a sheet of metal, or a conductive coating. Let me emphasize: this is an Anti-Static mat, not a sheet of metal. When measuring this device with a multi meter, what you should see is a resistance about 1M ohm between the clip and ground. If you want to [informally] verify it's operation, do the following: 1) Properly ground the mat (water pipes, gas lines, etc) 2) Shuffle around on the carpet wearing socks 3) Hold your hand on the mat while it is grounded. If the voltage rises above zero [measure on the snap at the back of the mat], it is not effective. When using this device, you also need to wear an anti-static wrist strap. This strap does not snap to the mat! Both the mat, and the strap need to be tied to earth ground. Each of these will have a resistor approximately 1M ohm or larger This is not a professional-grade mat, but it works. Again, don't expect this mat to be conductive when measured.

Seems good
I think it works well, I'm really not sure. I mounted it on my networking rack to have a nice electrostatic free workspace. Quality feels good. Put a computer on it (brand new computer with clean feet) and the feet left marks that have not gone away. I don't care about cosmetics though so it seems good.

Awesome ESD Mat
I have been working in the electronics industry for a few years now. One of my coworkers recommended that if I wanted to get better in my field then it would be good to do little projects at home. I thought that was great but then though about how there are rugs everywhere at my place and how I do not have any ESD mat which would be essential if I was working with components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. I was looking around on amazon and found this ESD mat. The price was decent and the reviews were good so I decided to purchase it. It arrived quickly in a long narrow box. Inside it was a slim white box. Inside that was the ESD Mat. The first thing I noticed was the colour was not white but more like off white which was not a huge issue. I unrolled it a measured it and it was mostly accurate to the dimensions except one side was 0.5 inch shorter than it was supposed to be. The mat itself looked it was made from a high quality material and was black on the underside. True to the picture there was a detachable cord attached to the mat with a crocodile clip at the end of it. I do understand what some other reviewers were saying about the mat curling up as that is how it was packaged. I didn't think it was a huge deal as I just put the mat on a table and left items on each corner for a few hours. After that it did not curl up anymore. I went out and bought a ring terminal from canadian tire. I opened up my wall outlet and attached the ring terminal to the screw of the wall outlet and closed it back up. I attach the crocodile clip from the mat to the ring terminal and that is how I keep the mat grounded. I attached a picture if anyone wants to see what that looks like. I have worked on one project of opening up an e reader and replacing its battery. It was nice to work on the ESD mat and to know that I am grounded and also that this mat is thick enough so my table underneath will not be left with any marks. Overall, I am quite happy with this purchase. I kind of with it was smaller length wise but not a huge deal. The material is good and it does what it is supposed to do.

No frill anti statc mat
Not too much to say about this apart from it works fine, I used it on a dining table and used a nearby radiator as a ground point. Mat seems well made and is a decent size allowing me to work on a mid size atx case with space for tools etc. The white faces up which is good as it is easier to see where you have put your screws etc. Only minor gripes would be the grounding cable could be a bit longer and the crocodile clip should be twice the size to aid clipping onto an earthing point.
