What does 'unsmoked' mean?

"Unsmoked" refers to the drying process, which uses clean warm air (indirect heat) to dry the herb. This is in contrast to smoked yerba mate , which uses direct heat from wood fires to dry the herb, resulting in a smoked flavor. "Unsmoked" yerba mate has a cleaner, greener flavor.

Would you add sugar to this tea? If not what would you add?

Up to you. I would try it by itself first, then add whatever you think you need or would complement the flavor. Sometimes I add a bag of vanilla black tea with it.

No. The color is more a golden-brown, and it is not smoked. I first tried Mate tea in Peru and it had a smokey flavor and gave me some good energy. This is not smoked and some articles I read said that makes it healthier. The box says it comes from the leaves of a South American rainforest holly tree. Best when brewed in 170 degree water as directed. If you google "Mate Tea", you can learn about the tea in general.

Can I compost the wrapper?

I have not heard of anyone tossing used tea bags for compost, I would contact the seller. Or, contact your local nursery. What is in the ground, such as clay, being acidic, etc.can determine the degree organic matter is broken down I bought this product only once, did not like either the taste or the tea bag it came in.
