I suppose it could be used to hold a wine glass. The Sheet Music stem is somewhat wobbly at times, which means you should not fill the glass to the brim lest it slosh out.

Does the tuning peg rest against the hanger on the left side (when facing the violin)?

No, despite answers to the contrary, the violin rests on the lower extent of the pegbox behind the nut. The tuning pegs do not touch the hanger at all. The product description is correct: violin does not rest on tuners.

can this be used for a viola?

Yes. My music teacher plays both violin and viola and uses this for both.

Can it be used for a ukulele?

No, the neck of the ukulele is too big to fit in the holder.
