Avid FR-5 Bicycle Brake Lever Set

Bought these to replace a broken set of “no name” levers on a Specialized bicycle. I’ve previously used Avid brake levers on 2 other bicycles. One set is over 10 years old. Still going strong. The angles of the levers are just right. The finish holds up nicely. Super easy to install or replace broken or worn out brake levers with these. And, they’re never expensive but just as good operationally as some that are more expensive imho. 10/10

I really do love these brake levers. But I have just one minor issue (and maybe it's just me)...but the side of my index finger keeps rubbing against the "pointy" edge of the lever's main body, near the pivot point (see my photos). I have to consciously keep my fingers positioned further away from this area in order to avoid contact. Again, this may just be me, and it could have to do with the fact that I'm running a 27.5 degree swept back Ritchey Kyote bar. Otherwise, these levers are great. They're the perfect lever for my late 90s Gary Fisher.

Good quality brake levers by avid/sram!

The avid brake lever is great!!! There is about thirty reviews that say that. I gave it 4 stars only because I did not get what was ordered. I still got the FR-5 but I think it was last years lever, No raised logo, logo painted white over black lever. I would have ordered from someone else had I known that, Could have gotten last years lever for cheaper. Minot detail to some people but for some folks out there this is more than a minor detail.

I am a purchasing consumer. I am posting an honest review and I am not receiving anything in return for posting this review.No complaints at all. Perfect fit and function with my old gary fisher 3-by. The bike came OEM with silver Avid levers that I never liked the looks of. These in all black are a better match for the rest of my bike. Shipping was slow from China, but for the price I am OK with that. Order placed August 12, delivered September 9. So be prepared for a long wait if you order these.

My daughters inexpensive mountain bike came with brake levers with plastic housings and soft aluminum adjusters. Naturally she dropped it and the adjuster bent in the housing which stripped out. After pretty much destroying it to get the cable out, I installed this lever set. VAST IMPROVEMENT. All aluminum and not soft. Adjusters stay as you set them and the cable barrels actually fit in the levers properly. Even if I had bought a premium mountain bike, I would buy these levers for replacements. Bonus is they are not expensive.

I'll be honest, when I first unpacked these I was skeptical. They are so light. I had originally planned on replacing both brake levers to keep the bike the same on both sides but I have waited so I could try these out and ensure they are okay.After using these for over a month I'll have no hesitation swapping the other one out the first chance I get. I recently made a 10-mile ride on a mountain biking trail with several steep declines and a narrow path with trees. I had no problems at all with this brake lever. It has held up very well.This isn't an issue for me, but the set screw on the part which attaches to the handlebar is on the front directly toward the rider. My OEM brakes were on the bottom. I was worried this may interfere with shifting but it did not. If it would interfere with your shifter then look for a product from this manufacturer with a different set screw location. Overall, I'd highly recommend the Avid.

Not a clue about the quality of these, as I sent them back, having not used them. Instead, I bought a new bike, but they seemed pretty decent in the box, and they were the same brand that was on the bike they were intended to replace, and those originals that were broken had served a good life, so it's fair to say these are pretty good also.

Great upgrade for your bike, it enhances the braking feeling quite a bit. Very well made. Note that the levers are quite short, meant to be pulled with two fingers.
