Functions of Type provides you with activities that you can use to strengthen your mental data-collection and decision-making skills. The specific mental skills that you will be better able to use are related to the eight psychological functions first defined by Carl Jung in his book, Psychological Types. Over the past hundred years, literally hundreds of type practitioners have been refining the definitions of the eight functions. Our own work has been to focus on how to make personal choices about our self-development using these refined definitions. In Functions of Type, each of the eight functions is defined and the mental skills associated with the function are described. You are given a chance to assess your own comfort in using the mental skills associated with that function using a self-rating assessment. Then there are two pages of mini-exercisesรยcalled activitiesรยthat you can use to improve your mental skills associated with each function. Review: Great Book! - This is the best book I have found to explain the functions of type. It includes activities to develop and strengthen mental skills as it applies to your perception and judgement. It also makes you aware of the various differences of each type. I like the easy index, reference, and journal pages. Easy to read, understand and use. Review: Well-laid-out reference for the 8 Jungian functions - This book will help you get a better feel for the real differences between the different Jungian functions (eg, how is Extraverted Intuition different from Introverted Intuition?). There are also exercises to help you develop any function you choose. Selected exercises could also be a useful basis for workshop exploration.

This will be my reference material for a long time to come !!
I am an avid Jungian and my research area includes cognitive functions. This book is not voluminous yet effective and will be my reference material for a long time to come. I am glad to have this literature in my personal library.

Best book for beginners
This book is probably my favourite book I've purchased on type. It goes into depth without going overboard and the activities are actually really useful. I really enjoyed this book that I've read it and studied it at least 5 times. DEFINITELY worth the money!

Previously missing in type literature-Practical devleopmental tools
This book gives specifc ways to develop the eight functions. Good as a tool to help people stregthen their use fo a function. Also useful in helping to undertsand how other functions work to those who don't have the preference and can't understand their less preferred functions.

The main thing here is that you do not have to be pressed into one of the 16 types, and exercise the functions individually.

The book is very well written It's easy to read and comprehend
The book is very well written It's easy to read and comprehend. Anyone who wants to buy this book must already have an understanding jungian cognitive functions and Myers Briggs' typology (16 MBTI personality types). This book explains what each of the 16 cognitive fucntions mean, different stages of their development and then provides list of activities to develop each cognitive function at each stage. The book also provides a self assessment sheet for each function and a blank page to record your progress. It's great for self improvement or for teaching others. I referred this to develop an activity based program for Photography students.
