The double-digipack edition of The Sound of Music includes the same features as the previously released Five Star Collection edition. The first disc of the two-DVD set includes the film, plus the option to listen to audio commentary by director Robert Wise. During the songs and underscored passages, Wise's commentary is silent and the vocal tracks are removed, allowing the viewer to hear the score in isolation (or even sing along). The second disc is reserved for bonus material. In a 14-minute featurette from 1965, "Salzburg: Sight and Sound," Charmian Carr (Liesl) narrates as she explores Salzburg and works on the set. More substantial is The Sound of Music: From Fact to Phenomenon , an 87-minute documentary from 1994. Narrated by Claire Bloom, it includes biographical information and photos of the real Maria, clips from the 1956 German film Die Trappe Familie that inspired the Broadway musical, and details of the musical's subsequent transformation into film. The movie's creators and principals, including Robert Wise, Saul Chaplin, Julie Andrews, and Christopher Plummer, as well as members of the von Trapp family, contribute extensive comments, spotlight Maria von Trapp's cameo in the film, explain the various sets and locations, and discuss the film's effect on the family. The DVD also has seven previews and TV spots, four radio spots, several audio interviews with Andrews, Plummer, Wise, and others, and "The Sound of Music Gallery," which offers stills and texts giving a history of Salzburg, production diaries and notes, and credits and a bibliography of recommended materials. DVD-ROM features include games and Web links. --David Horiuchi Review: The Best Musical . . . EVER - Julie Andrews, the Austrian Scenery, the Children, the Music. The Hills will live on forever in this Superior Classic Musical. Everyone should be treated to watch this movie. The 40th Anniversary Edition has a special treat, you can set it to play with Robert Wise (director) commentary, and only on this edition can you listen to the entire musical score with the entire spoken track removed (including the songs).. At the start of the movie he will tell you so. If he does not, then you don't have the correct edition. In later editions, he will speak through some of the background score. I found this to be the best part of all the dvd editions, which is omitted from the blue-ray editions as well. If you listen to any part of it, do listen to the background score when the baroness leaves and leading up to the gazebo scene (Something Good). It's magical. In later editions of DVD format and all Blue-ray editions, the Robert Wise commentary has been updated as I mentioned above, the ONLY version that I know of, which offers the entire musical score is the 40th Anniversary Edition. Of Course, by far, the best picture quality is the newly restored 50th Anniversary Blue-ray in 1080p. This is the second major restoration to the film. Review: Great movie! - This is a great classic. I can't believe I am just now watching it, and my grandkids loved it too!

This classic musical is a visual feast and delivers a heartfelt message of independence, endurance and humanity !
What more can I or anyone say about about this classic musical that hasn't already been said? Visually it's glorious. It's entertaining, comforting, intriguing, and inspirational with a heartfelt message of independence, endurance and humanity. This movie also depicts a" PG rated" glance of the rise of Hitler's nazi Germany and the Von Trapps escaping the third reich. Of course this movie fictualizes aspects of the Von Trapps, their daily lives and careers as singers and how that came to be and their exiting Austria and that's just fine. The true story shines its way past the areas of fiction and you walk away feeling you've gotten a realistic glimpse of their actual lives and circumstances. All the actors do a fine job fleshing out their roles and because of that you can't help being drawn into the story of the Von Trapps. I have absolutely no criticism of this movie. I highly recommend this movie for all ages.

A classic for all ages
what's not to love?! I bought this for my kids to watch after they watched part of it in music class. Truth be told I was happy to own it and watch it again. It's fun my 4 year old loves the music while my 9 year old is more interested on the history aspect of how life was and why the family had to flee their home

Classic movie!
The movie is a classic, one that we watch as a family every year. It's great to be able to talk about Nazi Germany with the children so they understand somewhat what the Haloucost was. Apparently a lot of American teenagers have never heard of Adolf Hitler or mass murder of hundreds of thousands of innocents. But I digress. The movie is well done, funny in parts, and the singing is lovely. It's fun to see Julie Andrews as a young woman (despite the worst hairdo ever). :)

a "must have" movie
if you are into classic's, musicals, or really good all time movies this one is the right one!! this was the first movie i ever watched and i've always loved it. i'm not much into older or musical movies but this one breaks all the molds! i love watching the special features that this comes with. it's so interesting to see how the real Trap family lived and what happened in their life and to hear them talk about it. and also to see the actors/actresses tell their sides of the story. don't hesitate to buy this movie, you won't regret it!
