Massive Mite Infestation thanks to Josh’s Frogs
I’ve bought from Springtails from Josh’s frogs and now my tanks are infested with mites. When I got the order about 3 weeks ago there were no springtails in there at all. I left it open and put a little food in, and I also put half of it in my millipede enclosure. Now I know better to wait to see the successful springtail culture BEFORE putting it in my tank, because about 10 days after seeing zero springtails I noticed mites in the half of the culture that I kept in the container it came in, I panicked and took all the coco fiber from the culture I put in the milli tank. I email josh’s frogs telling them that there’s mites and no springtails after the 10 days and I asked if they can please send me one with an established springtail colony, now worrying that I might have a mite infestation and hoping I can get an established colony of springtails to out compete the mites. Josh’s frogs said they would send me a new one.I get the replacement culture about a week ago and not one springtail in the culture once again. I wait to do anything with it and about 5 days in STILL not one springtail in sight, but today I noticed TONS of the same white mites ALL OVER my millipede tank AND crawling OUTSIDE the tank, they are everywhere and it’s going to cost a lot of money and time to move my millipede and clean two enclosures I have.I sent Josh’s frogs an email again and they refunded me and barely apologized or acknowledged how much time and money this will now cost me. They completely ruined my two enclosures and now I have a massive mite infestation that are even LEAVING the tank.DO NOT ORDER FROM JOSHS FROGS UNLESS YOU WANT A MITE INFESTATION AND TERRIBLE SUPPORT

Healthy culture
While we couldn’t see all that many springtails hopping around when we received this culture, the two terrariums seeded with it are now well populated. Couldn’t ask for more.

Took some time but great for terrariums!
I ordered them in the winter, and when they arrived, there were none inside. After a bit of digging, I had found maybe one or 2 minuscule ones. I was extremely disappointed. But I left them on my nightstand for about a month, then came back to check on them and there were so many! They are awesome and they worked great in my terrarium!

Great springtail culture!
Arrived in a box with what I think was a warmer, which is fantastic since it's mid winter where I'm at. Generally packaged really well and securely. The springtails are all alive and healthy, and the substrate was a good humidity level. Overall really happy with this purchase!

Mites and fruit flies, but no springtails
I ordered springtails and never received a notification that they had shipped. When I got them inside they were all dead.I contacted customer service to ask why this was and they said to wait two weeks and springtails will hatch and begin to surface. Two weeks later there was nothing but fruit flies, so I contacted them and they refunded my money. 3 days later little white bugs appeared. I put them under the microscope and to my surprise it was infested with white mites and baby crickets + fruit flies.I reached back out for fear that they might be bad for the frog and was asking for information on what they are and whether or not they are harmful. The response was “sorry, but we can not refund your money since you’re past 72 hours of notifying us.”Weird customer service response. Google helped me identify that they aren’t harmful, but I have a tank full of micro bugs that I never asked for. Sheesh.

Be Patient!
This is exactly what it's listed as, a starter culture. It is not an established colony. When it first arrived, there was a cold snap, and the Temps dropped to about 40F. I only saw 2-3 live springtails moving about. Perhaps more, but they're so quick it's hard to find them. I was worried; but after 10 or so days, some fresh air and a spritz of water daily, and a pinch of brewer's yeast here or there, they "sprung" to life. Now a month in, they cover the surface so long as they aren't disturbed. Just moving a bit of the substrate with a fingertip, and it seems to be alive and pop around as they all freak out to hide. They're super eficient, and while the intent was to seed a terrarium, I added some to some houseplants to help get rid of mildew and fungus gnats (or their foodsource) and it seems to be working. Great Product!
