Great Paint, Terrible Applicators
Army Painter paints are my favorite hobby paints, which is what makes this such a hard review to write. As much as I love their paint, I hate their spray nozzles. They are easily the worst spray nozzles that I've ever used. At least half -- at least -- clog during use, sometimes to the point where the can becomes unusable. I've had to throw out half-used cans of paint because they've clogged so badly. They could learn a LOT from Citadel's nozzles. I'm not a huge fan of Citadel paints, but I use their black and white primers, and their nozzles are excellent. Like I said at the offset, Army Painter is hands-down my favorite paint... I only wish I could get it out of the cans in an even and reliable manner.EDIT: Iโve recently had some conversations with Army Painter and theyโre working on new nozzles and have sent me some free replacement nozzles for my clogged cans. Iโve got to give credit where itโs due, and with the nozzle issue worked out, Iโm going to give them an extra star for great customer service. They also taught me how to clean their nozzles after use, so kudos all around to Army Painter.

Be easy when spraying this
It's a primer and it works. I have used it on the majority of my collection and I have to say I definitely love love love this stuff. When spraying go slow and lightly this stuff is pretty serious so as other reviewers have said it can be put on thickly if not careful. I use my hand to paint the sprayer to determine pressure when coating models. I have to also say that hey this stuff is most likely different than what you're used to buying and when anything new practice on objects that are not important to you in order to build and develop you're own abilities with the product. This product like all things with paint requires patience and skill. Side note if you're ever doing something with paint go small and thin Mistakes are part of the process and with light coats all things are fixable. Paint on my friends.

Not the best, not the worst.
I've tried quite a few primers looking for the best quality with the best price. Army Painter is certainly not the most expensive, but neither is it the cheapest. First the pros: As far as coverage goes, it does stick well to models. It doesn't hide details either. The black is a nice dark rich black color. This primer also sticks reasonably well to paint from the pot. Cons: My biggest problem (a problem I think actually outweighs the pros) with this spray is it leaves the model with an undesirable texture that is simultaneously chalky and glossy at the same time. A phenomenon I have a hard time even understanding. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and say there is a possibility I just got a faulty can.How it compares to other primers:Amy Painter vs P3 black primer: P3 is cheaper (by a dollar or two, so not that big a deal really) and leaves a better texture on the model. The downside to P3's formula is it isn't truly black and more a grey color. Army painters color is definitely better. P3 also tends to rub off of the model easier by handling so victory to Army Painter in that respect.Army Painter vs GW Chaos Black primer: Amy Painter is cheaper than GW's paint (by a dollar or two...sounds familiar) But GW wins with texture. GW's formula I have found binds best to models and leaves a slightly satin sheen. Not quite flat, but certainly less shiny than Army Painter. Army Painters black is darker than GW's black but not by that much. Both take to paint from the pot very well. Neither primers rub off that easily.Army Painter vs Krylon: Krylon is cheap as chips...But don't use Krylon on your models, it's a bad idea.Closing thoughts: Army Painter is a good middle of the road primer. If you don't mind the semi-gloss look then go for it. The biggest compliment I can give Army Painter is the black pigment they use is beautiful. I could just do without the texture. The price difference between primers isn't that much though, so you might as well leave your purchasing decision to personal preference rather than price. I hope this has been helpful. Happy painting fellow hobbyists and gamers.

I like it
It works pretty good on 3-D printed models You can put a kind of thick and it smoothes out everything The only issue I have is sometimes the paint doesn't stick to it So a light water down coat before you put your paint on is a good idea

Got one use - bad nozzle?
The paint itself is lovely. Got a perfect coat without issue. However, and no idea what happened here, but there seems to have been a slow leak in the nozzle. Went back to use it the next day and barely got anything out, and could hear a very slight "hiss" of air continuing to come out of somewhere. Can was more than half full. Disappointing, and will probably avoid in the future.

Try something else
Mattadjective(of a colour, paint, or surface) dull and flat; without a shine.Very poor. Finish is far too glossy to call "matt", even after 5 minutes of vigorous shaking. Instructions recommend 1 1/2 minutes, but I doubt any amount would change the result. The can also gunked up and became difficult to spray after using only about a third of it, producing only limp streams of liquid paint instead of the desired spray effect that would produce better, more even coverage.Pictured is a coat comparison with Citadel Maccrage Blue. Note the reflectiveness of the black compared to the opaqueness of the blue. A nice, chalky base for paint to adhere to. Maccrage Blue is also a premium mini-specific spray can, but produces about the results I'd expect. If this product was any cheaper I'd be kinder, but you'd be better off grabbing a ยฃ5 can of spray from any hardware store. Avoid.

Ok for minatures you don't care about
Pros - pretty cheap and can't find GW spray online. Fast deliveryCons - i have had 3 cans of Army painter. All 3 Matt black produced a sheeny look. Not too big a deal but its definately not matt. For all 3 i shook them vigourously before use and only used in good conditions. Additionally, you have to take much more care than with GW spray (that i used for 20 years no issues), else you will get spots of pain liquid, bits of bubbling, uneven finish etc.1st can was fine and i got loads of minatures out of it no problem.2nd can, it started running out of spray but i could feel the weight inside. Can stopped spraying and i can hear loads of liquid still inside (so basically the gas/liquid ratio was wrong) had to chuck it away.3rd can, similar issues its starting to run out of gas and ive only got a few big models doneSo summary, i would use this on large volumes of guys you dont really care about and just want cheap undercoat, and make sure you shake the crap out of it and try long sweeping sprays to maximise your gas/paint.

Was dreading this after reading some of the reviews
No issue in the end. No bulging can, no blocked nozzle, no porous texture, no gloss. Looks exactly as I expected, I painted a few metal parts from a bass - screws, rings from the machinehead (marked, I did not touch the machineheads themselves, those were black), that string adjusting thingy in the middle. It looks a lot less grey in real life, sorry for the picture quality.I am not a fan of the durability on metal, I can very easily scrape it off with my nails after days of drying, even though I have cleaned all the little parts exactly as suggested by the people of the internet. But the stuff I painted black aren't being scratched so hope it will last. It definitely looks good until it comes off.

Not as good as other brands
I bought this along with an Army Painter paint box set. Unfortunately, much like the paints themselves, this primer was very poor quality. It gave a very sticky and globby coating that flooded out a lot of the detail. I tried it again on a second model but tried holding the can much further away and shaking it for almost 5 solid minutes before using. Exactly same problem happened again, effectively ruining two models. Once dry the primer was also very shiny to the point it was looked like a gloss finish, despite being matte. This made it incredibly hard to see what I was doing when painting, something made worse by the fact that most detail was gone anyway.I only give 2 stars since the return was accepted and processed very quickly with no issues. If not for that then this would be one star.

Pain to get the cap off otherwise decent
The cap is attached to the can and needs to be cut with an xacto to get it off which I found annoying but safery first I guess. Other than that its a good paint, good coverage and decent colour however it's not entirely matt, more of a satin/semi gloss finish but it takes paint well (I used vallejo acrylics). Follow the instructions on the can and you'll be fine
