With the removable velcro inserts, can you store more than 16 miniatures in this bag with foam board being placed in the book section?

With the velcro books inserts removed, you could place a lot more than 16 miniatures inside. I removed the inserts in order to fit more books in, and it holds a lot. You could use multiple trays in the book section if you had the available trays.

Is it possible to remove the inserts and use it as a regular backpack?

Yes, you can remove the inserts. I’m not sure if you would want to use it as backpack but it would work 👍

Could someone tell me the dimensions of the foam tray insert for the heroes? I'd like to store them in the main compartment instead of the books!

Unless you’re planning to stand the trays on their side, I would not advise it. As for the dimensions, I’m not sure
