I mean have you ever seen a Val Kilmer movie you didn't like?

This is a remarkable film, based on true events. For anyone who didn't already know, there are lessons here about the massacre at Wounded Knee in Sioux territory in 1890, and part of the work was filed on the Sioux reservation where this occurred, at the U.S. national historical landmark.Other parts were filmed on the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation and in the Badlands.The acting and direction are superb, the John Fusco screenplay is first rate. He based it "loosely" on a 1974 incident at Wounded Knee. American Indian Movement at that time took over the town by that name in South Dakota to protest federal Native American policies.Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) plays a young FBI agent with Sioux blood (but zero knowledge of his family's Sioux _ sent by a Washington D.C. bureaucrat to investigate and quickly close a homicide on the reservation. He's in awe of veteran FBI agent Agent Frank "Cooch" Coutelle (Sam Shepard),Spoiler alert: Coutelle turns out to be a very bad guy, definitely not even a shadow of a hero.Meanwhile, Levoi learns about his heritage from tribal police officer Walter Crow Horse (Graham Greene) and tribal elder Grandpa Sam Reaches (Ted Thin Elk), and Maggie Eagle Bear (Sheila Tousey).Also in 1992, Apted had previously directed a documentary surrounding a Native American activist episode involving the murder of FBI agents titled Incident at Oglala. The documentary depicts the indictment of activist Leonard Peltier during a 1975 shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.The plot also weaves in a few other murders of Native Americans that are also based on real life 1970s incidents.I found the movie thoroughly authentic and engrossing, not to mention heart wrenching.Highly recommended.

My adult grandsons watched this and really liked it. Playback is perfect. It was packaged well and arrived intact with no scratches.

I watch it over and over

I am former law enforcement and have been doing research on Native American Indiansand the culture.This movie was accurate and closely paralleled an actual homicide case that involved the homicides of 2 FBI agentsand later the homicide of Anna Mae Quash who was a Mi'kmaq activist from Nova Scotia, Canada, who became a member of the American Indian Movement, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, United States during the mid-1970s.This movie was very well done and gave examples of how the Indian cuture really is and Graham Green played a very important part in educating us. Greene is one of my favorite Native American Indian actors. He is from the Six Nations Reservation tribe in Canada.I have a special interest in this movie also because I think Val Kilmer is an excellent actor and I particularly love Sheila Touseyas an activist and highly educated Teacher who confronts the "rookie" Indian FBI agent Thunder Heart.In my opinion Sheila was actually playing the part of AIM Activist Anna Mae Quash who was killed as an FBI informant according to the actual case and movie script. Anna Mae revealed the actual killer of the FBI agents and Indians who was a Parolee.The names of the Pine Ridge shoot out victims were: Ronald A. Williams and Jack R. Coler.(According to what I know, 2 fingers were severed to send the FBI in Wash.D.C. so they could confirm they were real.)It is ironic that in the case of Anna Mae Quash, the FBI had her hands severed to verify her identity, when she was already identified. The hands were sewn back on for the Burial. (Referred to as "Making The Journey")What's even more interesting is that actual AIM members were in the movie as cameos and someone I know of is Dennis Banks.When I was in the U.S. Secret Service in 1974-1977 I had occasion to run into some AIM members in Washington, D,.C. who were occupying the Department Of Interior Building and all the "Feds" were looking for Dennis Banks. It appeared some AIM members were hiding out in some local Churches.Later Banks had a meeting with Department Officials.(Note: Banks and others like Leonard Peltier were accused of killing 2 FBI agents in Pine Ridge South Dakota.[...] ) Peltier made incriminating comments about the FBI agents homicide and is in federal prison today.Over 10 years later, I was working in U.S. Customs and ran into an actor named Dennis Banks who was crossing the Border at San Ysidro. I'm pretty sure it was Dennis Banks cause I ran his name to see if he was still wanted and he came up "negative".To this day the U.S. Government has LIED and Mistreated the Native American Indians and this movie is a great example ofeven how the FBI was corrupted and manipulated by even one senior agent who was going to benefit thru the deaths of innocent Americans who were Indians.(See also Clear Cut (1991) With Graham Greene. Early Val Kilmer, thought he was outstanding , as well as Grahme Green.

The premise of "Thunderheart" is a bit contrived, featuring actor Val Kilmer as a part-Indian FBI agent working a murder on an Indian reservation. However, the plot is handled with a surprising amount of grace and a wry sense of humor. It works well as an action piece and as a snap-shot in time of how Hollywood perceived the situation of American Indians.The FBI investigates a series of homicides on a Sioux Indian reservation in the Dakotas, possibly triggered by a dispute over mineral exploitation rights. On the case is young Special Agent Ray Lavoi, assigned in part for an Indian heritage he holds at arm's length. The case will bring Lavoi into close contact with the locals, launching a voyage of discovery, both personal and professional...The movie features a heavy duty supporting cast, including Sam Shepard as the lead FBI agent, Graham Greene as the local law, and Fred Ward as the would-be developer. Rex Linn and Fred Dalton Thompson have cameos. Ted Thin Elk has an outstanding supporting role as Grandpa Sam Reaches, who with a certain amount of wry humor guides Lavoi on an unwanted but surprising spiritual journey. The ending is well-handled. Recommended.

Le cinéaste britannique Michael Apted (1941-2021) vient de nous quitter. Filmographie prolifique mais très inégale à mon avis. Ses films n'étaient surtout pas très subtils (ni sur le fond ni sur la forme). Globalement, rien de bien marquant donc, hormis peut-être deux ou trois ( Nashville Lady  en 1980,  Gorilles dans la Brume  en 1988 et enfin ce  Cœur de Tonnerre  en 1992). Pour le reste, un  Narnia  par ci... un James Bond par-là ( Le Monde ne suffit pas , avec Pierce Brosnan et Sophie Marceau) et surtout pas mal de ratés. On lui a d’ailleurs souvent reproché son côté foutraque, à Michael, là où d’autres y voyaient sans doute une ouverture (ou une sorte d'éclectisme). Le problème s'est souvent situé dans sa mise en scène banale, avec pas mal de stéréotypes et de clichés bien gras et tout cet empire que le cinéaste n'a su exercer sur la matière de son art, sur ce que l'écran nous délivre ici et là, que ce soit la lumière, l'espace, le temps, la présence insistante des objets, l'élégance d'un geste, l'épaisseur d'une chevelure, le gouffre d'un regard, etc. Outre-manche, c’est toutefois sa saga documentaire  Seven-Up  qui est considérée comme L’œuvre majeure de sa vie. Il s’agissait de filmer les mêmes individus sur plus de quatre décennies et de les interroger sur la société britannique, leur vie, leur âge, etc. (ce concept sera plus tard repris et mis en scène avec des acteurs-trices dans  Boyhood  de Richard Linklater). Quant à Thunderheart (titre original), voilà l'un de ses films les plus réussis. Il rappellera le tout récent  Wind River  de Taylor Sheridan (2015). Il s’agit d’une enquête policière bien foutue adaptée d'un roman de Lowell Chesters. Tout se passe entre Washington et une réserve indienne du Dakota. Un meurtre (première scène au ralenti, façon Peckinpah)... Au bureau du FBI, non loin du Capitol : un jeune loup est sommé d'enquêter sur place. Problème : les tensions sont vives entre traditionnalistes (attachés à la nature et au culte des anciens) et progressistes (en général, des pro-gouvernementaux qui veulent faire table rase sur l'histoire de leurs ancêtres).Le film a été produit par  Robert De Niro . Il y voyait là un moyen de rappeler au prochain gouvernement la nécessité de mettre un terme aux conflits internes que subissaient les différentes communautés dans les réserves indiennes (reservations, en anglais), victimes de toutes sortes d'agressions et de crimes gratuits (et subissant encore le racisme de la part d'une partie de la population blanche). Leurs nouvelles zones à défendre étaient de véritables ghettos, des territoires du Tiers-Monde, comme ça l'est rappelé dans le film, vus les taudis et les conditions misérables dans lesquelles vivait la population. Seuls les policiers indiens (des locaux et des pro-gouvernements) pouvaient s’en sortir (et encore...). En 1992, quand est projeté ce film, le républicain George Bush père est encore au pouvoir (il est président des Etats-Unis). Le démocrate Bill Clinton remportera les deux prochaines élections (novembre 1992- novembre 1996). Hélas, rien de sérieux ne sera fait en faveur des Amérindiens... Le casting est très bon.  Val Kilmer  y tient donc le rôle de cet agent du FBI (d’origine Sioux de par son père) dépêché par Washington pour enquêter auprès d’un agent local ( Sam Shepard , impressionnant). Son personnage est tiraillé par sa double identité. Son contact avec les locaux va peu à peu changer la donne et transformer sa perception des choses. Apprendre à voir ce qui est invisible, à sentir les choses, à apprécier la nature : tout est là... L’acteur s'est maintes fois surpassé. Trois ans plus tard, on le verra dans  Heat , le fameux polar de Michael Mann (1995). A l’époque, on parlait beaucoup des Amérindiens et de leur passé (un véritable génocide pas encore reconnu : il faudra attendre 2009 et Barack Obama pour enfin entendre des excuses officielles de la part du gouvernement pour les déprédations, les violations des traités, la reconnaissance des massacres...).Deux ans plus tôt,  Danse avec les Loups  de Kevin Costner (1990) avait été un gros succès à la fois publique et critique et avait suscité un regain d'intérêt pour la population. D’ailleurs, on retrouve dans le film de Michael Apted l’un des acteurs clés de « Danse... » : Graham Greene interprète ici un flic local, chargé lui-aussi d'élucider ce meurtre à la « réserve », le lieu où part enquêter le flic interprété par Val Kilmer (au fait, on ne confondra pas  Graham Greene , l’acteur, avec le célèbre écrivain britannique, auteur d'un sublime roman,  La fin d'une liaison , je referme la parenthèse). Les deux hommes (Kilmer et Greene) développent des relations conflictuelles jusqu’à finalement coopérer et devenir inséparables. Je n'en dirai pas davantage, mais c'est un film à voir si on aime ce genre de polar. C'est bien ficelé. Pas trop de surprise, hormis un final en apothéose (mais chut !). Le film, si je tenais surtout à le voir (et revoir), c’est parce qu’il m’a été re-com-man-dé par plusieurs ici, dont shuffle, alors que nous devisions sur la filmographie de l'acteur :  Kill Me Again , un néo-noir signé John Dahl et sorti en salles en 1990 a par exemple été évoqué, tout comme ce film de Michael Apted. Merci à lui pour les recommandations ! Les sous-com’, ça peut être utile, la preuve. Hélas, je suis à nouveau dans l’incapacité de communiquer, ni pendant mes pauses ni chez moi, ni par le moyen de Chrome ni par l’intermédiaire de quelque autre moteur de recherche (sic). Pour cette édition de  ThunderHeart  que je commente (l'ai trouvée, il y a peu, pour moins de 4 cacahuètes), je pense que c’est la meilleure qui soit, malgré l'absence de toute édition blu-ray (ici, la netteté du grain est à saluer, ainsi que le piqué, très correct; on signalera enfin la présence des versions française et anglaise, choix multiple de sous-titres, etc., écran 16/9ème, pas besoin de zoomer comme ça arrive parfois sur de vieilles éditions TriStar ou MGM). Cela dit, il existe une autre édition ( Coeur de Tonnerre ) qui me paraît être d’égale qualité; mais je ne jurerai de rien puisqu’elle date du 12 février 2000…(1).__________________________________(1) Si les formats ont évolué depuis une bonne vingtaine d'années (je ne parlerai même pas des sites en streaming), on rappellera qu'il n'existe donc à ce jour aucune édition blu-ray (ni aux Etats-Unis, ni ailleurs). Sinon, pour les curieuses et les curieux, qui voudraient approfondir le sujet, signalons la série didactique produite par Steven Spielberg ( Into the West ), sorti en 2007 et visible sur youtube, mais aussi la mini-série HBO  Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee  inspiré du bouquin de Dee Brown, la référence indispensable et insurpassable sur le sujet : j'ai nommé  Enterre mon coeur à Wounded Knee , un bouquin qui m'avait été prêté par un ami. [Vorsicht, leichte Spoiler nicht ausgeschlossen!]„They're a proud people. But they're also a conquered people. That means their future is dictated by the nation that conquered them. Rightly or wrongly, that's the way it works, down through history.”Mit diesen Worten, deren Mischungsgrad zwischen Zynismus und Heuchelei man zunächst nur erahnen, nicht aber genauer bestimmen kann, läßt sich FBI-Mann Frank Coutelle (Sam Shepard) gegenüber seinem neuen Kollegen Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) über die Einwohner des Bear-Creek-Reservats in Süddakota aus. Levoi, ein junger und erfolgreicher Ermittler, ist selbst zur Hälfte Sioux, und diesem Umstand hat er es zu verdanken, daß Washington ihn auf den neuen Fall in den Badlands angesetzt hat, denn man glaubt, die Indianer wären eher bereit, mit einem der “Ihren“ zu reden, wenn sie sich schon der Notwendigkeit ausgesetzt sehen, mit dem Staat zusammenzuarbeiten. Und Zusammenarbeit ist notwendig, denn es gibt eine Reihe von Morden und Gewalttaten im Reservat, augenscheinlich begangen von einer Gruppe traditionsbewußter Indianer, die es ablehnen, sich der Kultur der Weißen anzupassen. Ganz oben auf der Fahndungsliste steht Jimmy Looks Twice (John Trudell), ein Aktivist, dem man äußerste Gewaltbereitschaft nachsagt, doch auch die Lehrerin Maggie Eagle Bear (Sheila Tousey), die mit den Aktivisten sympathisiert, ist ins Fadenkreuz der Ermittlungen geraten. Bei seiner Ankunft im Reservat muß Levoi freilich erkennen, daß niemand wirklich scharf darauf ist, mit dem „Washington Redskin“ zu sprechen. Zu allem Überfluß werden die Indianer auch von einer Gruppe „regierungstreuer“ Indianer um den Sioux Jack Milton (Fred Ward) terrorisiert, die es sich auf die Fahnen geschrieben haben, auf ihre Weise mit den Traditionalisten abzurechnen. Dabei können sie auch auf die Unterstützung durch Frank Coutelle rechnen – ganz gleich, wie brachial ihre Methoden sind. Was für Levoi anfangs wie ein ganz normaler Mordfall aussieht, entpuppt sich indes zusehends als eine politische Intrige, in der es um große Geschäfte geht und zu deren Verschleierung Jimmy Looks Twice als Bauernopfer hinhalten soll. Der junge FBI-Mann aus Washington muß sich bald nicht nur fragen, wem er überhaupt noch trauen kann, sondern er sieht sich auch zusehends mit seiner eigenen Vergangenheit konfrontiert und durch den Reservatspolizisten Walter Crow Horse (Graham Greene) und den alten Medizinmann Sam Reaches (Chief Ted Thin Elk) auf eine Reise zu seinen indianischen Wurzeln geschickt.Mit „Thunderheart“ aus dem Jahre 1992 hat der britische Regisseur Michael Apted einen bemerkenswerten Film, vielleicht sogar seinen besten, gedreht – eine Mischung aus Whodunnit, Polit-Thriller und „Bildungsroman“. Schon die Anfangsbilder des Filmes – im Lichte einer aufgehenden Sonne tanzende schattenhafte Indianer – rufen einen scheinbaren Widerspruch hervor, denn das Nebulöse, eher der Vergangenheit Zugehörige der Schattengestalten will zunächst nicht recht zu der aufgehenden Sonne passen. Im nächsten Moment sehen wir einen einzelnen Indianer, der brutal von hinten erschossen wird, und mit einem Male hat uns die Kamera in die Großstadt Washington entführt, in der wir Ray Levoi sehen, wie er im Auto sitzend die Stadt durcheilt, wobei er mindestens alle paar Sekunden den Radiosender wechselt. Dieser Ray Levoi wirkt zunächst uneingeschränkt wie ein Kind der schnellebigen und oberflächlichen Moderne, wie der typische angepaßte und ehrgeizige FBI-Agent. Es ist ihm sichtbar unangenehm, von seinem Vorgesetzten auf seine indianischen Wurzeln angesprochen zu werden, und als sein Sioux-Vater erwähnt wird, behauptet er zunächst, dieser sei gestorben, als er ein Säugling war, woraufhin ihn sein Chef korrigiert – „… als Sie sieben waren!“ Auch gegenüber dem unverhohlen rassistischen Coutelle ist er bestrebt, von vornherein jeden Gedanken daran ad absurdum zu führen, er sympathisiere etwa mit den Indianern. „Ich gehöre bestimmt nicht zu denen“, stößt er verächtlich hervor, als er und Coutelle eine erste Fahrt durch das elende Reservat unternehmen und sein neuer Partner darüber sinniert, daß diesen Menschen einmal ganz Amerika gehört habe, daß man sich bei ihnen allerdings nunmehr wie in der Dritten Welt vorkomme. Aus dem gleichen Bestreben heraus, seine eigene Kultur zu verleugnen, geht er schließlich Crow Horse, den er zunächst für einen der gewalttätigen Aktivisten hält, so hart an, daß sogar Coutelle ihn zurückhalten muß. Man sieht, daß Levoi sich als hundertprozentigen Amerikaner beweisen will – und ahnt, daß der Grund für dieses Bedürfnis ein äußerst schmerzhafter sein muß. Nach und nach allerdings, durch seine Zuneigung zu der Lehrerin Maggie, die aufkeimende, rauhbeinige Freundschaft zu Crow Horse und die von dem alten Medizinmann ausgehende Faszination, beginnt Levoi – getreu der Bedeutung seines französischen Namens – seine Wurzeln und sein Verhältnis zu seinem Vater in einem anderen Licht zu sehen – und seine bisherigen Loyalitäten in Frage zu stellen.Val Kilmer spielt diese komplexe Rolle ausgesprochen glaubwürdig, weil er sich großer Gefühlsausbrüche enthält und man auf diese Weise den Wandel, der sich in seinem Inneren abspielt, subtil erahnen muß. Der Film ist dabei so inszeniert, daß einerseits der Entwicklung des Protagonisten genügend Raum zugestanden wird, andererseits aber auch die Krimihandlung sowie die unterschiedlichen Nebenfiguren nicht in den Hintergrund geraten. Insgesamt ist Michael Apted hier ein sehr sehenswerter, aber auch unterhaltsamer Film gelungen – man mag zu den sparsam eingestreuten Mystery-Elementen stehen, wie man will –, der den Zuschauer am Ende nachdenklich hinterläßt und ein unsentimentales, moralinfreies Plädoyer für einen fairen Umgang mit den indianischen Ureinwohnern ausspricht.

I have been a fan of Val Kilmer since the film `TopGun'. It was quite by chance that I came across this film `Thunderheart'. It raised nostalgic feelings that took me back to my early years, where our school playground echoed to the sound of Cowboys and Indians engaged in mock battles. We were oblivious, then, of the true significance of the historic confrontation that took place between the early natives of America; resisting the onslaught of the techno revolution that finally swept away their culture. This film continues to illustrate the historic, persecution of a part of America's native heritage, and sets a scene of greed and exploitation on an Indian reservation. In the film, influenced by events that took place in the seventies, Val Kilmer (Ray Levoi) convincingly plays the part of an FBI agent, whose part-Sioux background makes him the prime choice to investigate a death on this Indian reservation. Teamed up with an infamous, older agent, played by Sam Shepard, the investigation leads Kilmer to the realisation that the U.S. government has framed an innocent man. The arid location, the Indian actors, and the haunting music of James Horner, easily takes hold of the imagination; transporting one back to the time when a culture viewed the inquisitive, intrepid explorers of old with suspicion. The intriguing Chief Ted Thin Elk, the reservation's religious leader, knows the secret of Levoi's (Kilmer) lost heritage. Wisdom emanates from this old Indian, but as the leader of a defeated people, he looks to Levoi, and sees in him the spirit of the historic `Thunderheart'. During a touching sequence in the film, the Chief tells Levoi that he is their modern-day `Thunderheart' and that he must make for the `Stronghold' the historic Thunderheart was unable to reach. As the film draws to a close, Levoi finds the evidence he needs to expose the plot, despite Shepard's efforts in eliminating the witnesses. Pursued by Shepard and his henchmen, Levoi makes for the ancient, mountainous stronghold. There above him in the mountains, when all seems lost, he finds the support the old chief said would be there. This film is a must for those who can sense the legacy left to us by one of the world's deeply spiritual, nomadic nations.

This is somewhat of an oddity , a GREAT Val Kilmer movie. Don't get me wrong , i love Kilmer as an actor but so many of his movies ended up 'straight to video' . That complaint aside , this is the sort of movie that has you wanting to watch any of his best movies once again and having a Kilmer movie marathon. This film is up there with Salton sea, Tombstone, Kiss kiss bang bang and Heat . Kilmer plays an FBI agent, who because of being part American Indian , is drafted into investigate the murder of an Indian on an indian reservation . Supported by an ensemble cast of great character actors and a well written script and a combination of a good director and some very streamlined editing , this movie cracks along at a fast pace . If your a kilmer fan , this ones for you , and if i may just suggest you heck out another Kilmer gem called 'Spartan' .
