Wireless Communications from the Ground Up: An SDR Perspective

First off this book is expansive. It covers a lot of material and covers it in a way that is easy to read and very approachable. I am a BSEE many decades ago and didn't focus on digital communication while in college. I found this book to be just the solution to fill that gap of my knowledge base. I recently needed to come up to speed on recent wireless technologies for a project I was working on and this book is now my Go To for the subject matter. The constant references to GNURadio components allowed me to experiment with the material using simulation which was much appreciated over needing to purchase SDR hardware. This author has a few other books I am going to consider in the future.

The author has a depth of knowledge on wireless communications from the simplest elementary to the most complex that he covers in great and understandable detail for someone not completely familiar with wireless, and specifically with and SDR slant.The chapters on (1) timing synchronization, (2) carrier synchronization, (3) PLL and finally a coverage of (4) OFDM were excellent reads imho.The explanations are excellent. I purchased the book electronically and in paper for when I dont have a device screen in front of me and I also took the course the author provides - all together it forms a really well rounded package for a moderately knowledgeable person with some physics, and comms basis - thank you nice job.

Having seen remarkable FOSS wireless projects within the Software Defined Radio community, I purchased this book with the intention of understanding how to create my own. I wanted this book to take me from an SDR newbie to a capable person in the SDR community.It has offered me a great ride from the start by presenting the right balance between Digital Signal Processing and Wireless Communication. The book has content spread across 800+ pages and new concepts are well presented to the reader in an intuitive manner.No regrets! I love reading this book thus far.

Lured by the "beautiful figures which you will encounter throughout the text with logical and intuitive explanations.", "If you are not a pure wireless communications academic, you would have found that the mainstream textbooks on this topic are filled with heavy mathematical details which makes this field an exclusive membership club for those who can understand several types of frequency variables and their corresponding Fourier transforms"ThenI bought this book.What did I find:By skimming the book, plenty of charts, equations, greek letters, more equations, a polar charts, waveforms and (so far, they are somewhere, but has not found it), zero GNURadio examples.No. Not for the layman.Not for someone non-initiated on advanced calculus or electromagnetism.A expensive paper weight.

Very good content and beautiful color drawing and pictures in the book preview and on the authors site. The paperback book has no color, an the diagrams seemed cramped. The paperback is 800? pages with a flimsy cover and back that will not stand up to the time it takes you to read this book.

UnderstandableClear explanations

There is no shortage of books on wireless communications, but most cater to a specific audience—those who already have prior knowledge of the topics covered. Many of these books, while mathematically rigorous, tend to be dry and lack the motivation and simple examples needed to engage the reader.This book, however, stands apart. It is a pleasure to read due to its strong emphasis on motivating the mathematics, presenting concepts clearly, and making the necessity of the math intuitive. The explanations are well-structured, and the beautifully illustrated diagrams further enhance comprehension.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in self-learning practical wireless communication systems. The only downside is that it may not be ideal as a textbook, as it lacks exercises at the end of each chapter. However, for any wireless communications engineer, it is certainly a valuable resource to have.
