TERRO Garbage Guard Trash Can Insect Killer, 1-Pack

These trash guards work great and kill flies and maggots as advertised. The main downside is the tape: one side is difficult to peel, can be easily damaged, and may loosen from the vibration when the trash hauler empties the bin (if you do manage to peel the difficult side off). To secure mine, I used two machine screws with nylon-insert wing nuts. It takes very little time and effort to drill the holes and fasten them properly, and it is worth it because the trash guards work so well. I started with a clean receptacle and used this cleaner: https://a.co/d/03vdpyXc. I sprayed it on, let it sit, and then rinsed it off with a strong jet stream. For materials, I used two #10-24 x 1" black flat-head socket-head screws (https://a.co/d/0gwEcyvm) and two 10-24-inch nylon-insert wing nuts (https://a.co/d/05aviDVH). The nylon insert it to prevent the wing nuts from loosening from vibration. I also placed small O-rings under the screw heads to help keep out moisture, though they probably were not necessary. The hole was snug, the flat head had enough surface area, and tightening everything down firmly likely would have sealed it well enough. I drilled the hole with what I believe was a 5/32” bit, though it may have been 11/64”. Start with 5/32” so the screw fits snugly and requires light pressure to install; mine threaded in, which should also help with sealing. Use the trash guard on the inside as a guide and drill outward through the top. See the pictures for reference. I tightened good and snug, if you use too much force, you may crack the trash guard, so don’t try to get it as tight as you possibly can. Finally, if the lid or other areas have wear holes, seal them if possible. I had a small hole in one corner of my lid and covered it with gaff tape on both sides. Kills everything as promised, but still leaves a cleanup Living in Florida with a household of 10 and once-a-week trash pickup, outdoor trash cans are a constant battleground for flies and maggots. I’ve always trusted TERRO products, and this Garbage Guard definitely does what it claims to do. It won't stop flies from entering or laying eggs in the first place, but everything that hatches or flies in dies. Flies, maggots—it eliminates them effectively. A few things to keep in mind: Cleanup required: Because it kills them so well, you'll still have dead bugs/maggots at the bottom of the can to wash out. Odor: It isn't designed to eliminate odors, so keep that in mind if smell is your primary issue. Overall, it isn't a total cure-all for keeping a trash can spotless, but it dramatically cuts down the live pest population and does its job. I’d buy it again!

Allow me to paint a picture! Mississippi…in 111 degree heat. A slightly paunchy 50+ year old man in slides, athletic shorts and a t-shirt. His sweat-drenched body labors in the hot sun and oppressive humidity. He is on a mission to rid himself of the pesky flies that inhabit his garbage can. What stands in his way you might ask? Allow me to answer! A piece of raggedy, pain-in-the-butt adhesive! This maddening piece of garbage(no pun intended) has two sides. The plastic on one side peels off like a dream. The other? Well, the other requires the strength of Hercules himself to remove. In this case, a tired, sun-baked and out of shape retiree had no shot at removing this thing. I can only assume this is some type of sick joke perpetrated by the manufacturer. I can hear them all chortling in some far-off board room. “Let’s make one side super easy to remove and then make the other side nearly impossible!!” Anyway, fast forward to yesterday. With the creative language still hanging in the heavy, humid air, I FINALLY get the other adhesive backing off…at least what is left of it! The remnants of it were stuck to my shirt, a pair of needle nose pliers and my fingers. I carefully stuck the bait station to the inside of the can and hoped for the best! As for the effectiveness of the device, I will report back and amend this review. I can only hope the poison works better than the adhesive strip!! Update: Flies have established a colony in and around the garbage can. They are hanging out and living their best lives. They are undeterred by the bait station it seems. I’ll give it a bit longer but so far it seems the product itself is not working. Last Update: After another couple of weeks, I noticed only a slight decrease in the number of flies. I do believe the product helped but not in a meaningful amount. I caved and bought a bottle of Clorox cleanup (with no annoying adhesive) and sprayed the inside of the can and the outside of the can. So far, that seems to have helped more than the fly station did. I would not buy this again. Besides the frustration of the adhesive itself, the station just doesn’t appear to work well.

The product works as advertise, noticed that I have no flies or bugs around my trashcan. My biggest issue and frustration is the damn tape does not stick. I have used the double sized tape that it came with a stronger one that it comes with, but I think after the heat and sun melts away the sticky tape or the vibrations from when the trash is dumped into the trash bin, it comes off, which makes me pissed off that I have to put another one on there and trying to find a different sticky tape for it to stick.i guess I’ll try crazy glue next 🤨.

On the positive side, t hey seem to work. However, one of the two fell off the first time the trash was emptied and was lost. The remaining one has dramatically reduced the number of flies in that can. And for the record, I scuffed the top of the lid and cleaned with alcohol. The pad stuck well to the can lid. The pad failed to adhere to the capsule itself.

I figured if one of these is good, two will be even better so I used some gorilla double sided tape to mount the two little containers of insect killer on the inside top of my garbage can lid. Before there were always flies buzzing around because it gets really hot here in the summer and when I looked into the garbage can I knew something had to be done. So after washing out the garbage can real good with some disinfectant spray cleaner I installed these and they are working great. I even see dead flies around the rim of the garbage can and some dying inside. This stuff works! Don't doubt it. I would however wear a face mask next time I install these because this is not a scented product and you can't tell if you are breathing any in yourself. I suggest they scent it slightly so you'd know! I advise only using this in an open area and OUTSIDE! This is not for indoor use! Now each time I got to put the garbage out I am not attacked by flying insects! It is great. I'd definitely get more of these next summer. I am using two at a time! They will last 4 months! Last week we had terrible maggots and flies. Put 4 of these on right after trash pick up and this week we had a couple of maggots all week only a few flies in the dumpster (as opposed to last week you were mobbed every time you opened the dumpster lid to toss in trash, and maggots were crawling all over the place). Dumpster does NOT seal at the lid, so I assume these will not last 4 months, but I used 2 screws each to attach 4 of them to the plastic dumpster lids, and they are doing the trick! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! My guests who use the dumpster are pleased. Worth every penny. Don't really have a smell as I can tell. They blend in with the lids. Decided to use 4 since the dumpster is mid sized (not small like a trash can). I did NOT use the sticky tape.

Everyone with an outdoor trash can need these!!!! We we’re plagued be flies and maggots in the heat of the summer with temps near triple digits on our back deck that gets full sun for 6 hours a day. These were the perfect solution for completely eliminating maggots in the trash. I don’t know how they work, but so know they work. This is our 4th season using these. We attached them to the inside of the trashcan lid. Unfortunately, our trash folks must have taken the last one away when they throw the cans up into the truck. I guess it fell off. The very next week, loaded with maggots and back to order more.

The product isn't working as it was shown. The package seal was loose. The double side tape was missing. The flies wasn't seen for a day or two after that the product seemed disappeared for flies or may be the flies were using some kind of mask to avoid the smell. It's been over a month and not happy with the results.

Reading the previous reviews, I was a bit skeptical byuing it. But I can tell you that it works well the day I put it in. Flies are still around the bin but always ended up dying. No more maggots and bad smell. So happy. Back to buy a couple more. 100% recommend this products.

Effect is very good

I bought this product because occasionally flies will get in the kitchen garbage and spawn maggots which are disgusting. Yesterday there was another maggot infestation. Many, many had died and they leave a gooey mess to clean in the garbage pan. So the clean up takes time. But there was one live one which crawled out of the device while I was cleaning. And three or four on the top of the lid inside still alive. 20 or 30 dead in same place. Maybe it only works with some of them. In any event, the clean up takes time and is disgusting.
