I've used these pads for a long time. No fear of swirls or scratching anything. I cleaned them on the buffer. With water and a light brush Running the motor on slow, often on. Then spin dry it on full speed

awesome for metal polishing especially diamond plate
work great for metal polishing and heavy cutting they also wash out and can be reused much easier and more times than foam, i prefer 5" over 6" it doesn't get as hot and is way easier to clean
