Fun novelty for 'taste trip' party.
When I read about this fruit, I was extremely eager to try it despite the high price. I read that it was being used in molecular gastronomy as a novelty to surprise the diner by making a sour desert sweet. I also read that research was being done on using this to allow diabetics to experience sweetness which they cannot get because they must cut out sugars. There was a famous article talking about folks using this at 'taste tripping' parties. I had a board meeting at work which I wanted to grab the board's attention while demonstrating the importance of being able to change perception and decided to use these pills as a fun way to do that. I cut up lemons, limes, strawberries, apples, candy bars, etc. and had little cups with shots of apple cider vinegar and Guinness beer. Everyone was instructed to take a pill and let it dissolve on their tongue without chewing. This was the hardest part. Those who pushed the pill around on their tongue and let it dissolve slowly seemed to have the best results ... also, not to rush things. Wait around 5-10 minutes after the pill dissolves for best results. Out of 40 people, about 20 were absolutely amazed by this, 5 said they didn't really feel any result and 15 said that it changed tastes a bit but wasn't amazing. Part of the fun ended up being seeing the different reactions and watching those who were blown away interacting with those who weren't getting any difference. The things which worked best were the citrus fruits. I would say that the most amazing reaction was to those who ate the lemons. I cut them into wedges and most people ate the fruit part and many agreed it tasted like drinking sweet lemonade. A few of us actually ate the rind as well, which tasted like candy. The lime tasted like sweetened key lime pie. It was 50/50 between those who liked the lime but those who did mentioned key lime pie. The strawberry also was a big hit and it made a red strawberry taste like an incredibly sweet fresh picked strawberry bursting with sugary sweetness. (almost too sweet according to some) The apple cider vinegar was another mixed result. 10 people drank it and said it tasted like sweet apple cider. 20 people drank it and said it was tolerable but not anything they'd want to drink again. 10 people said they could taste no difference between this and vinegar and spit it out. One thing I would do over, tell people not to smell the vinegar before drinking. Those who smelled it first seemed to be the ones who tasted no difference. The Guinness beer tasted sweeter but not quite like the chocolate milkshake some sites report. There was still a little bitterness to it although a malty sweetness did appear with the pill. The apple was pretty much nothing special. Most agreed it tasted similar to normal. Onion was also nothing special and it didn't add any sweetness, although we noticed that there was a coating on our tongue after eating the onion which would make me recommend not trying onion with this. The chocolate bar pieces tasted the same. No difference. We drank red wine which tasted a lot sweeter, like port wine. So, if you are taking this before a meal, my advice is not to serve an expensive bottle of wine as the taste will completely change. Our bottle was a $4 bottle of grocery store wine and it tasted like a nice port. Overall, this is a great product to dazzle some people from a novelty standpoint. I did find, the more I used it, the less the effects seemed to happen. Meaning I tried 2 more of these pills over the week and each time the sour to sweet effect lost a little bit. If you want to throw a taste trip party, it really does give you a lot of interest from friends. It is a bit scary to think of any long term side effects but nobody experienced any issues with that yet. I'll be interested to see where this product goes in the future once it becomes less expensive to produce. I would certainly choose this over chemical sugar substitutes. One little tip ... when using this, you could literally eat a whole lemon, rind and all, like an apple. Keep in mind that while it changes the taste, if you are susceptible to heartburn or acid reflux, eating a great amount of citrus fruit and drinking vinegar might have adverse effects on your stomach despite the sweetness in the taste.

Amazing! (mberry Miracle Fruit Tablets)
With 3 people trying these, myself included, we found they work as advertised to strikingly change the way a person tastes food. How to avoid wasting it? You do have to let them dissolve in your mouth and swish the tablet or the saliva all around your tongue for best effect. Although a bit of effect can be noticed when chewing them up a bit, it's much better to let it soak in. It's like a little piece of somewhat sweet-and-sour compressed fruit candy so it doesn't take very long; maybe 30 to 60 seconds depending on how powerful your saliva system. The effect lasts between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, probably also depending on how powerful your saliva system. What tastes are affected? It's my understanding that the tablets affect only the taste of sour, changing it to sweet, but because a lot of foods have some amount of underlying sour, the foods affected are more broad than just sour. These tablets don't eliminate all bad tastes. You can still taste the nuances of food, good and bad, but it's like bad tastes don't matter as much...? I like a variety of sour and bitter tastes to begin with though, so maybe I'm biased. What foods are affected? The foods most affected tend to be sour, bitter, or mostly-sweet foods, while neutral and salty foods are less affected or unaffected. Purely sweet foods like candybars and marshmallows aren't affected much or at all, while foods that are more sweet than anything else, but not purely sweet are highly affected, such as sweet fruit -- because they also have slightly sour undertones for the tablets to work on making sweet into ultra-sweet. (The fruit we tried were naval oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, and apples, and that was true of all of them.) Beer and wine are highly affected. This could be a good way to enjoy beer and wine if you don't, but it could also be a good way to begin to appreciate what's good about beer or wine in the first place, and later to continue to appreciate it without the tablets! You see, enthusiasts of sour or bitter foods are often looking for subtle elements of taste within the overall sour or bitter flavor. With these tablets, you just might be able to find find that PART of the taste you like without being distracted by all the bitterness and sourness. What kind of sweetness? The sweetness that you taste instead of sour isn't a nondescript sweetness, but it's close. It's not nearly as distinctive as stevia, for example, but more distinctive than refined sugar. If you can taste the difference between cane sugar and beet sugar (most people can't), then you'll probably find these tablets' sweetness distinctive. On the other hand, if you can't taste the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup (most people can, I think), then different "kinds of sweetness" probably won't matter at all. I thought the miracle fruit taste was a nice hint of slightly tropical, slightly gamy, aromatic fruit, but one of the other two people I tried them with thought the slight gaminess was too much like overly ripe fruit, and therefore a little bit nauseating. She still uses the tablets more than I do though. Most awesome foods to try? Lemons! Grapefruit! Vinegar! Not many people are fully familiar with the taste of vinegar straight from the bottle. I recommend tasting vinegar before using the berries, then after. It's amazing! Looking forward to trying onions and pineapple! (Not at the same time.) But watch out! These things taste different but they have the exact same ingredients as they do without the tablets, so they'll affect your stomach pretty much the same. Still, I wasn't hurt at all by half a shot glass of vinegar and a whole lemon. Speaking of having the same ingredients but tasting different, these could be used as quite an effective diet aid to cut down on excess calories and other harmful effects of refined sugar / high-fructose corn syrup. As for the safety of "miracle berries" themselves (which is the important thing in these tablets) apparently they've been used for countless generations by people living where they grow. I recommend getting a variety of foods for tasting before your first use. Super-fun! Enjoy! ----- EDIT ----- We tried two other brands after this one. - Red Box: The tablets this review is about are the "mberry" tablets in the red box. - Green Box: "Miracle Fruit Tabs" in the pale green box with (Japanese? Chinese?) script. Looks same as ThinkGeek sells/sold. - Yellow Box:"Miracle Frooties" XL size, in the yellow box with lemon and lime for the O's. Here's how they compare: Red Box: Most effective. (Most miracle fruit content.) Most gamy. Middle price. Overall good. Yellow Box: Near to most effective. (Near to most miracle fruit content.) Least gamy. Lowest price. Overall best. Green Box: Least effective. (Least miracle fruit content.) Near to most gamy. Highest price. Overall not so good.

Does work, leaves hole in pocket
I hosted a Flavor Tripping party at my university with about 60 people using these tablets. Needless to say, the tablets are quite a bit more sketch than offering berries, but considerably easier to obtain. The taste of the tablet isn't great, but isn't so bad anyone spit it out. After dissolving, I had a variety of foods for tasting available... about 95% of those who tried it seemed to enjoy it and have a noticeable difference with their taste buds. Some foods that worked well from my experience: - Grapefruit (this was by far the most impressive) - Lemons - Limes - Apple Cider (nearly became too sweet to drink) - Orange Juice (tasted particularly good) - Vinegar (might give you a stomach ache, but hammers home the idea of how warped your tastes are) Many other foods had little or no effect (as expected): pretzels, chocolate, monster energy drink, peanuts, mints, etc. One or two were uncomfortable with what the tablets did to their taste buds and refused to sample anything more. Was not a big deal as it wears off in 15-30 minutes. Final verdict: A very fun one time treat, but far too expensive to use for anything other than parties. Amazon will get these tablets to you quickly, but if you have time before your event I would try to obtain some actual berries to avoid the sketchy factor.

Buy these, eat lemons, profit.
All of the other reviews are about how expensive taste parties are and other dumb stuff, but I don't care about that. If you also dont, then you're in luck. This is a great product. If you've seen something about the miracle berry on TV (I saw it on QI and had to know for myself) or read about it and it interests you, it really is worth trying at least once. They are expensive (the two pack here is the best deal), but given what you're getting out of it, the price is understandable. And 20 tablets will last one or two people for a while. Some people tout this as a health product, and it will allow you to stomach some sour and bitter foods or drinks that you might not have been able to without it. If you use it regularly, it can really help you cut down on sugar without having to lose out on sweet. Just put some lemon juice in water - after dissolving a tablet to coat your tongue in the miracle berry - and you have a sweet lemonade with no need for any added sugar, or for heinous tasting sweeteners like splenda or stevia. But this is more of a treat than a daily health routine, at least for me. That it helps me eat less sugar and more healthy produce is just a nice bonus. Make sure you have some citrus around (berries work too, and there are plenty of other foods suggested, but the citrus really impresses me). Grapefruits and oranges taste far sweeter without the sour and bitter flavors taking over, and even lemons and limes are delectable while your tongue in under the protection of the mberry. Your lips will still notice the citrus, but the sensation of taking a bite of lemon that's as sweet as an orange is pretty unreal. The effect only lasts for about 30 minutes, give or take, so you may want to prepare your food and drink beforehand (or while the tablet is dissolving on your tongue). But in a life that's full of routine things and products making empty promises, this is a fun and unique experience that anyone who really loves food will enjoy.

I'm sold!
Have been trying to figure out a way to quit smoking without the historical weight gain that follows when my body starts craving sugar like crazy in the absence of nicotine. So I ordered the M-Berry tablets in the hopes that they would enable me to consume things that are good for me and that will help in the detoxification process without feeling like I'm losing my mind and without wanting to eat everything in sight. I got my order today, was really hoping they would work, but was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews, so I guess I was cautiously optimistic. I tried 1/2 a tablet, and a slice of lemon expecting it to , best case scenario taste "sweet-ish". Oh my gosh! The lemon tasted like a nice sweet lemonade, not "sweet-ish"--sweet. I was blown away. So I tried it with my pomegranate/aloe vera juice mix--amazing! The final test was my MSM/C mix which tastes very sour (from the vitamin C) and very bitter (from the MSM). I plan to start my day with the M-Berry tabs because they enable me to get those supplemenatal drinks down effortlessly. My husband has never heard of the miracle fruit, so I decided to do the lemon taste test with him, without telling him why I had him dissolve this 1/2 tablet on his tongue between his 2 lemon samples (I cut it in front of him and had him eat a piece before and after just so he could see that I had not added anything to the fruit. He was amazed as well. Had no clue why such a thing could be valuable, but at least I know it wasn't the placebo effect for me. I usually have challenges drinking enough water. I added some lemon to a bottle of water it tasted like lemonade. I am really excited. Yes, the tablets are a little pricey as supplements go, but M-Berry's pricing is very competitive with other sellers out there, and now I know the quality is good, and I don't have to worry about perishability like I would with the actual fruit. I will continue to buy them until my plant starts to fruit, and probably even after that just because they are so portable. I think they're great.

They were okay, probably won’t buy again.
I got these as a gift for my brother. He was the first to use them, said they tasted a little funny, but not terrible. When he was trying out food his mind was blown, he ate plain ketchup and mustard and thought they tasted okay, drank apple cider vinegar and said it tasted like apple juice. But then I tried them and thought the berry tasted gross, I did not want to wait for it to dissolve, but I did. First this I tried was the apple cider vinegar, but definitely did NOT think it tasted like apple juice. I didn’t really think it changed the taste of anything. The only thing I thought tasted different were raspberries, they tasted absolutely amazing!

A Mind-Bending Flavor Experience!
I first discovered miracle berries over a decade ago, and this brand has been my go-to ever since. If you've never tried them, you're in for a surprise! These little tablets have the incredible ability to make sour things taste sweet. Eating a slice of lemon is like having a sip of fresh-squeezed lemonade, it's that dramatic of a change. I love introducing these to friends and family; their reactions are always priceless. Beyond the fun and novelty, I've found these to be a fantastic tool for healthier eating. A bowl of plain Greek yogurt with some fruit transforms into a decadent-tasting dessert. It's a great way to cut down on sugar without feeling like you're depriving yourself. The effect typically lasts for about 30-60 minutes, which is plenty of time to enjoy a meal or a series of snacks. The tablets themselves are easy to dissolve on your tongue, and they don't have a strong taste. If you're looking for a fun culinary experiment or a unique way to make healthy eating more enjoyable, I can't recommend these enough. They are a staple in my pantry.

An hour of sweet, mouth fun.
This was my first time purchasing these and I was very impressed! The tablets are made up of freeze dried berries and corn starch. Much like the other reviewers said, it takes about ten minutes for the tablet to dissolve on your tongue. At first, the tablet tastes like bland nothing, but then you taste some bitterness, then sweetness. I made sure not to chew the tablet and really get it all over my tongue, fully coating it. It takes a little patience, especially when you are excited to try these. I tried all of the things the other reviewers suggested (ie. lemons, limes, hot sauce, apples, etc.) but my absolute favorite was pink grapefruit and strawberries. Oh my gosh, the strawberries tasted like they had been dipped in sugar and the pink grapefruit was the best fruit I had ever tasted. I also tried this with an IPA beer, but it was just ok. It didn't really add to the flavor at all. The coating lasted for about an hour for me and left me with a slight aspartame taste in my mouth, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I think these are fun and I can see these as an aid for dieters, people who are on medications, and foodies. The packaging is very nice, and well designed, and beautifully informational. These would make a great, fun gift for those that have an open mind. I highly recommend googling "flavor tripping" and "miracle berries" and doing some research (ie. watching videos on youtube) before taking these. I wanted my experience to be fun and flavorful, so I avoided foods that others reported as bad: olives, mayonnaise, already sweet foods, etc. I didn't find anything about them to be "sketchy" as the top reviewer stated. Maybe they meant that since they were unfamiliar with the "flavor tripping" product and the fact that it's called "tripping"? I don't think that these are FDA approved though, so I can see maybe having an issue with that. But all in all, I thought they were awesome. PS. Ten come to a package--I had already taken two (that's why my images only show eight tablets).

So fun!
These are the coolest little things! They turn anything sour into something sweet! My sisters and I sat down and tried these together and it was hilarious. The best foods were strawberries, oranges, and apples in my opinion. My sister even drank a sip of vinegar and said it was sweet. We ate lemons and limes and there was no sour flavour at all! These are good for a bit of fun. The only downfall is they teste horrible, like sickly sweet, but it's not vomit inducing so its fine, definitely worth the fun!

Unique & Fun Experience to share!!
So what people need to keep in mind, is that it’s not easy to just import fruit from Africa. These tablets are dehydrated versions of the fruit in tablet form. So they’re nowhere as near as potent as the fresh fruit. That being said, they work best with fruits and vegetables. Citric acids work well. Doesn’t work on vinegar based foods (like the real fruit). Tip: while the tablet melts on your tongue, move it around so it touches every surface of it (tip, sides, middle). Anywhere the tablet touches, it will trick the tastebuds there. Eat the fruit first as a baseline before the tablet. Favorite fruits with this: strawberries (it tastes like jam), blackberries (like candy), pineapple and grapes (just makes them so delicious), ofcourse limes/lemons for the novelty, and surprisingly…cherry tomatoes are incredible. OH if you squeeze some orange juice into soda, it tastes like Orange Crush!

Need 2
The berry pill is fun. However to be truly effective you need to use 2 to ensure full tongue coverage. The best effect happens when the tongue is fully covered. These pills are small and will do a good job. A larger or 2 pills really puts a spin on the taste buds. If all taste bud as are not covered then effect is a novelty at best. In short let dissolve on tongue completely making sure that you move it around your tongue to get all surface area. The more coverage the better it works. My second batch and it’s a great to use with a few friends for a fun game. Effective for about a hour to hour and a half. Worth the try.

Fun, calorie free, and not quite what I expected
This is a fun novelty item. Great as part of a gift basket or as a stocking stuffer at Christmas. Definitely worth trying. We tried it with some lemon juice and it tasted like Sweet Tarts or sour candy. It gave pickles a sweet taste too, almost like butter pickles. Not something that would replace artificial sweeteners in food. It takes a minute or two to effect your tastebuds. But I could see it used in a drink or main dish to alter the taste of a desert.
