A classic
+++ Note, this review is for the 2009 25th Anniversary release +++ Ghostbusters is the iconic 1984 comedy starring Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Rick Moranis (the last two in supporting roles). The idea is that a group of scientists (Ramis, Murray, and Akroyd) is convinced that ghosts are real (which is established fairly early on in the movie) and can be captured and stored. They end up purchasing a fire station and selling their services as Ghostbusters. Of course, by the end of the movie, there is a threat not only to New York City as a whole but to the world if the Ghostbusters do not stop it. Chances are, anyone reading this by now has seen the movie at least once. For the handful who may not have, it is definitely an adult comedy. It has a lot of swearing and some sexually suggestive material (but no nudity). It is extremely funny with jokes that you may miss the first time around. Even with a large ensemble cast all of the actors get at least some good material, and pretty much every character gets at least one memorable line. The movie has been released multiple times on DVD and Blu-Ray. If you end up with the 25th-anniversary set, it carries over all of the making-of and behind-the-scenes material from the DVD release and includes the commentary track with the director Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, and one of the producers. The big addition to this set is a "Slimer" mode, which is a picture-in-picture viewing of the movie that has a ton of material including interviews with cast members and pop-up facts about the movie. There is also a preview of the video game that was released at the same time, and a feature on restoration of the Ecto-1 car. All in all, a bunch of good material for those who like going through the bonus material. It is one of the best comedies not only of the 1980s but of all time. Even though it looks like a movie that was made in the 1980s, the story holds up even though it is now almost 40 years old. If you have not yet bought it on disc, you may want to get the 4K version, but if you are a fan of physical media it is worth picking up.

Lovely and great to share
This movie is one of my favorite movies and has been for a long time. I was around when it was in theaters but back then the $5 movie ticket was a bit cost prohibitive for me. I did burn out a VHS tape of this movie, gladly got it on DVD when it came out (think I got 2 different versions) and now it is one of the few things I've gotten Blue Ray. I love it and now that I know there are people out there that haven't seen it I am that person that will happily watch this with you to get you familiar with Ray, Egon and Peter. Unlike some of my other favorites this one still holds up pretty well with the times. One of the best things about watching with again with new people is they laugh at the parts you remember so well though you might have forgotten why you remember it so lovingly. It is a great movie, if you remember it in a good light, share it with someone who doesn't know.

Classic 80's Comedy on Blu-Ray
If you remember the eighties, there is no way you don't remember Ghostbusters. This film was more than just a movie when it came out, it was an event. Who didn't have one of those T-Shirts? I think I still have mine somewhere... Of course, I wouldn't be writing this review if I thought the movie was simply all hype. Beneath all the marketing, toys and catchy song lies a very funny film. The type of comedy we hardly see these days. Ghostbusters is quite a clever mix of comedy along with bits of other genres including a bit of horror. The anchor being the great performances of Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson, all in the peak of their careers in comedy at the time. I'm not going to go real deep into the film as I want to discuss the Blu-Ray transfer but it's a great script, has wonderful acting and a great pace. The special effects might look a bit out of date in this age of CG but some hold up pretty well more then 20 years later. So this film is finally available in HD and its looking great. A lot of the details lost over the years are back and the colors, especially the ones involving the special effects come out strong and bright. Even when in theaters, the film had a grainy, subdued look to it, similar to Saving Private Ryan. Whether that was the director's intent or simply bad quality film, the years were certainly not helpful in improving it. A lot was lost when the film was finally released on VHS and DVD did nothing to help that. This BD really does the film justice but it is by no means comparable to recent releases. The film is after all, over 20 years old. But there is no doubt this is the best this film has looked ever. Better perhaps than in theaters. Where this release really shines is in the Special Features department, with a plethora of content from multiple commentaries to documentaries. They not only have included material from when the film came out along with extras from previous releases but brand new content as well. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of a picture in picture track where several people, among them Ivan Reitman, Dan Akroyd and the other actors, producers and other people involved in the film comment along with the movie. Must see stuff! Ghostbusters is a must-buy in and of itself so I would recommend it to anyone who likes comedy but this release really sweetens the deal. The transfer is awesome, the extras are many and that song... well who can forget that?

Double Blu Dip but it's GORGEOUS
The new 4K release of Ghostbusters is simply the best it's ever looked. It's always had a bit of a washed out look but the colors here are more vibrant, the blacks are blacker and it retains the film grain that is so often complained of being scrubbed out in rerelease upgrades. If you have the previous version it's most likely fine to keep what you have, especially for the special features. The original special edition DVD has the coolest special feature that subsequent release all deleted, the "mst3k" style silhouette commentary track, so personally I've hung on to all the releases and box sets. If you have a big tv (ESPECIALLY if you're one of the lucky few with the new 4K tvs, as there are even richer colors and qualities only visible on those screen types to experience) and don't already own it, this 4K blu ray upgrade is kind of a must own. If you already own the blu ray and don't mind spending $10 around on an upgrade (even if you have a big tv but isn't 4K) it still is a nice experience if you're a fan of the movie.

Even Zuul would like it!
It’s an inexpensive Ghostbusters Blu-ray in a single-disc case. That’s it. Did you think it would be something spectacular? Buy it and enjoy the movie.

Big improvement over the previous Bluray release!
Let me just preface by saying, if you've never seen Ghostbusters there is no excuse for skipping over such an incredible piece of cinema. The writing of this film is still witty, magnificent and well executed on all levels. Folks, they just don't make them like this anymore. Perhaps what I love the most is that even with remaster after remaster, they NEVER changed any of the special effects! Somebody call George Lucas and slap this bluray in his face and show him that despite having out of date visual FX, this is wayyyyyyy better than re-tooling or changing something that does not need it in the first place. As for the bluray itself the transfer is a big improvement over the last release. The contrast is not overblown, so all of those details that should have been visible in the last bluray actually are now. Color is more accurate and natural too. Thanks to the improved transfer , more fine details emerge (transparency of the ectoplasm, textures on clothing etc, the sky actually having visible clouds in some scenes due to the finer tuning of the contrast). Dark scenes (there are lots) look great, still detailed and they didn't dial back the grain so it has that nice film look (as it should). Sound is great on this disc, mastered nicely, sometimes flat BUT when proton packs are used or catastrophies happen, the surround kicks in big time, Dialog is clear and center. I DO NOT have a 4k TV but despite what some other reviews have stated, there is a noticeable difference in quality over the last release. If you are a videophile or a Ghostbusters fan, do yourself a favor and buy this disc.

This release contains the newly restored 4k release
This release contains the newly restored 4k release (yes, of course, downsized to 2k). The film grain is slightly more natural than the previous native-2k release.

Much better than previous release
I bought this version of Ghostbusters on Blu ray as I was let down by the poor transfer on the previous release. Mastered in 4K release is miles better in picture quality, colour and dealing with grain. However there are some scenes where its nearly as bad as the previous release. All in all though a vastly improved Blu ray compared to its previous release.
