Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis 1st Edition

Perhaps it is odd to have a favorite textbook, but this semester, Basic Engineering Data Collection and Analysis was undoubtedly mine. My professor mentioned near the beginning of the semester that he thought that it sometimes "doesn't give the bigger picture", but as a student I was more than satisfied with this book.The ideas were presented in an order that seemed reasonable to me. It started slow, with the first few chapters taken up with some basic but important definitions. After that, it quickly got more intense, and we went from covering a full chapter a week to going through only a couple of sections. However, the concepts were still not too difficult to understand because of the large amounts of discussion and the examples that accompany each new subject. Some of the points that the authors bring up struck me as quite insightful. The examples are thorough and frequent, going step-by-step over each problem so that the results are easy to understand and duplicate.Each section and chapter is finished up with a large number of practice problems that did well in illustrating the uses of the formulas and concepts. The section problems have their accompanying answers in the back of the book. There was one question that I thought was worded in a way that made it a bit difficult to understand, but otherwise I thought them well done. The difficulty level seemed appropriate; the questions did not go too far beyond what the examples had already explained, but they still required some independent thought.There are some parts of the book that I still have no experience with. The course I took did not involve the last few chapters, and the book also came with a disc for additional study that I never found the time to look at. But overall, this book seemed so thorough, from the discussion to the examples to the appendices, that I was usually nothing but pleased with it. It felt as though the authors very much cared how well the readers understood the material, and took great pains to make sure that all was clear. What a nice contrast to the mathematics textbook I had to use this year!

Actually useful information on a topic that can be a challenge

This book came quickly and without any delay, so I had it in time for school. The CD was brand new and the binding just had some regular wear and tear. The pages were in good condition and there were not any highlighting or marks on them. It was way cheaper buying this book through Amazon than any of the bookstores in the area. With that said, I have no complaints whatsoever and would recommend this purchase in a heartbeat.

I don't like anything about this book and I have talked to many people that are in my stats class as well as people who have taken stats before me, and none of them have ever said anything good about this book. Examples don't help much at all.
