Effective and inexpensive alternative to a conventional pinch collar for most dogs.
I have used this collar on at least 20 dogs. Many of these dogs had no obedience, bad manners, and behavior issues that required training. The most common problem among the many has been pulling on the leash. This collar will do just what the dog needs in order to begin to end leash pulling and that is to be uncomfortable when it is pulling on the leash. Harnesses, harness leashes, "gentle leaders" and the like are merely gimmicks being marketed to those with good intentions, but lacking in knowledge about leash pulling and other unwanted behavior as well as dog obedience training. This collar is inexpensive, made well from high-quality materials and easy to use if the recommended sizing and fitting instructions are followed. This collar should always be used with the included nylon backup slip collar or some other type of collar. I use a snap-around collar for a backup. ALWAYS USE A BACKUP COLLAR! Pawmark sells a leash extension on Amazon with two snap hooks that works well to attach the leash to a primary and backup collar. This collar is effective as a general training collar for most dogs. I highly recommend trying this collar before spending a lot more money on a conventional metal pinch collar. The size of the collar is adjusted by adding or removing links. This can be a little tricky at first. However, there are videos that demonstrate how to do this properly. After a couple of tries, it is not hard at all. If you are unfamilar with pinch collars or have been exposed to the negative propaganda about them from the Dark Side, you should know that these collars are not painful nor do they injure the dog in any way if used properly. But, NEVER LEAVE THIS COLLAR OR A PRONG COLLAR ON A DOG FOR DAYS!! This is really a bad idea. I have read some of the less than positive reviews concerning this collar. Some of them are irrelevant as they refer to a different collar - with pictures included. Others are in the category of those unique situations such as dogs with very long coat hair, and dominant or aggressive dogs. This collar is probably not going to be as effective as a prong collar for specific special cases. The collar is a great first collar to use for most dogs. However, like other collars and tools might not be effective for some dogs compared to a prong collar. I use a prong collar for foundational obedience work and then switch to this collar when moving the dog to an electronic training collar. The small collar size is suitable from my experience for dogs up to 50 pounds or for dogs with small necks. If it is the case that you have to use less than six links for a dog with the large size collar, I recommend using a small size and adding links. You do have to take some time to read and follow the instructions and watch the videos on how to size and use the collar - especially adding or removing links.

I'm SO glad I bought this collar.
I used this collar for the first time today. A few things about the collar itself: First, WATCH THE TWO MINUTE VIDEO. It shows how to add and remove links. It took a couple of minutes to get the hang of it. It was easier to unclasp than to clasp on when I put it on my dogs. The prongs are not sharp at all. Once you get the link undo, you can see how they connect. But seriously, watch the video. Now, about my dogs. I LOVE my dogs and would never think to buy a product that I thought would hurt them. I was skeptical about buying a collar that you pinch or inflict pain on them. I read a lot about this collar and was convinced that it would be good to train them with it. I have two border collies. My boy is two years old. He is a great dog. My yard is not fenced. When we are at home, I don't put a leash on him to go outside in the yard. (I never let him out alone). He comes when I call, he doesn't run off, etc. I had been using a harness to take him for a walk. He would suddenly turn into some sort of sled dog. He never stopped pulling. He pulled so hard that he would end up walking sideways. He also felt the need to 'herd' cars. Whenever a car came around, he would drop to the ground until the car passed and then try to lunge at it. SO, after I started out on the walk with the StarMark Training Collar, my pup started to do the same behaviors. By the time we got to the end of our walk, he improved soooo much. I learned to give him a slight tug as soon as I could see that he was eyeing the car. After he let the car go past without a reaction, I would call him back and give him a treat. He still wanted to tug me but it was only a little tension. He would stop when I stopped and as soon as the leash was loose I would give him a treat. My other border collie is a four-year old girl. When we go outside in the yard, I can not trust her to be off-leash. If you even mention the word squirrel, she goes wild. Her triggers are bikes, rollerblades, and other animals. Even though my boy pulls like a mule with a harness, I think she is more of a struggle when we walk. I was very concerned about putting this collar on her because she doesn't have as much meat on her neck as my boy. I bought the large collar and had to remove 4 links. For her, I am ALWAYS aware of oncoming bikers and skaters. For her, I would put her in a sit-stay until the bike would pass. She would still lunge. Today on our walk, I started the same way. She did lunge the first time. I was a little frightened but she was fine. When the next bike passed, I prepped her by giving a gentle tug and telling her to 'leave it'. She went at it a little, but a lot less than the first one. We passed several bikes and skaters on our walk. (I live by a lake that is well travelled). By then end, she totally ignored all bikes and only pulled slightly at the sight of other dogs. I am so pleased. I actually enjoyed walking with my dogs for the first time ever. I am sad that the weather is not going to be nice tomorrow because I am now looking forward to walking my dogs. Would I recommend this product? Absolutely YES. I just ordered a collar for my daughter's corgi. When I read the reviews about other owners and their struggles, I have to believe it is because they are not reading their dogs behavior before the lunging event happens. I am pleased how well it went for the first time using the product. I can not attest to the longevity or durability of the links but they do include a safety collar, which I used. If you are worried that your dog will break through the linked collar AND the safety collar, then you have bigger problems that need to be address with a trainer. The collar alone won't 'fix' your dog's behaviors. It is a great tool though.

Better than I expected.
I was looking for something to deter my 1 yr old 65lb Doberman from pulling on walks. The metal prong collar worked well, but I felt the prongs were dangerous in certain circumstances. This collar's teeth seem more gentle than the prongs, yet pointy enough to get the message across. I've only used it a handful of times... he is walking without pulling most of the time. Plus I got a harness that also seems to work better than just a collar. Had a bad experience with the prong collar. When he was about 7-8 months old we walked to the park and 4 lab mix dogs attacked us. When they charged at us, my dog tried to run, but I had hold of the leash. The prongs squeezed into his neck causing him to cry out as I was busy kicking the dogs away from us. The more my dog pulled, the more the prongs hurt, the more scared he got. Luckily the owner of the 4 dogs got there in time. But from that day on, I have not put that prong collar back on. I don't think this collar would have hurt near as much. The construction is actually better than expected, especially in this price range. Seems pretty sturdy. Color is a dark blue that doesn't look as bad as I thought it might. Was hoping for color selections like black or camo or dark brown. But the blue isn't that bad. It also doesn't look quite as menacing on the dog as prong collars do. Just a little thick and heavy looking (although collar is very light weight. Now I sometimes just carry in my pocket on long walks in case he gets in a pulling mood. If considering a prong collar to stop the pulling, I would highly recommend trying this one first. We also have a gentle leader - which works pretty well, but he really doesn't like the strap on his nose. And tried the Easy Walk harness where leash attaches to the front opposed to the back. It works OK. Cuts down on pulling. The current harness is great - light weight, comfortable (at least seems to be, Brody likes it). It is an EzyDog Padded Chest Harness. Would recommend - got it at TheDogOutdoors.com about $24.

thankful for this
works like a charm. i have a reactive yorkie, her trainer advised me to not use a harness on her and to get one of these. and at first was a little reluctant but i was desperate. and this was 90% the solution. i also now carry a can of "pet corrector"also. & now i can walk anywhere. no pulling and she walks beside me.

This pinch collar absolutely works!
I needed something to work so I searched all over Amazon looking. I ended up buy this product and really prayed that this would work! I put it on my dog and he and I had the best walk we ever had up to that point! My mind was seriously blown! Every walk there after was a dream. His response time to changes so fast it’s wonderful! I also want to point out that this product is super nice bc unlike the metal pinch collar you run the risk of putting it on wrong or the silicone tips fall of and can break the skin which is absolutely not okay with this collar there is no way to put it on wrong and it’s rugged and tough and the pieces or links don’t cause pain which is important to me. You may make the dog feel a little pressure but not pain. Also my dog is an Alaskan malamute and his hair does not get wrapped around the links. He also is so comfortable wearing it around the house that he sleeps in it sometimes and does mind it at all! This product has changed everything for the absolute better and I will always buy this collar and I will always rave about this collar! Life changing. I got the large and it comes with extenders and it also comes with something that makes it tight once on your dog and loosen when you let the slack out of the leash. So basically it adjusts to your dogs neck in a safe fashion. This collar is made tough so the quality is wonderful and the links won’t snap and the collar when on looks like a three D printed collar and looks unassuming so to other ppl it’s a collar without the stigma of a metal pinch collar. Any who get it give it a go I’m telling you it’s the best thing I think I have ever bought.

German shepherd friendly
We’ve had it for 2 years. Works well. I had previously bought the metal prong one when he was a baby, but the rubbers kept falling off and then rusted and was giving him a rash. so we switched to This plastic-type one about 2 years ago and it’s very durable. He is a puller on the leash. This helps with him pulling. It helped with training. He’s fairly small for a German but the size we got fit perfect!

Good collar if you can get it to fit properly
I have used regular prongs but I liked the look of these better (not as many issues with passerby's as regular prongs). As far as correction level I think both this product and regular prongs correct at about the same level for the average dog. I like the design of this tool better because for people who don't quite know how to use prongs properly, there is much less risk of any injury the way this is designed. Some people mentioned they were concerned it might break because it comes with a back up collar, all prongs (be it this one or regular ones) run the risk of opening up on their own, they don't break, they can just open up in certain rare situations, so its always better to be safe then sorry and have the leash also connected to a back up collar. I do like the quick snap to take the collar on and off. All that said, they are a PAIN IN THE NECK AND WILL BREAK when attempting to resize them. It was a true nightmare to get the links apart, I did follow directions and I am familiar with how to resize regular prongs, these are WAAAY harder then regular prongs. Putting it back together is harder then even getting it apart. The first time I resized it, it still was too loose I went to take it apart and it broke. I've owned this collar less then 48 hrs and it broke (see pictures) the broken link is now totally un-usable. So for that reason, and that reason only, I am giving it 3 stars. Aside from that, I don't worry about it coming apart on the walk, corrects well and is very safe for the dog, and it looks like a regular collar which is a plus on the walk.

I'm still shocked that something worked.
I usually wait until I've used a product a few times before I write a review but with this there is no need. I have a 90 LB 1/2 Labrador Retriever, 1/2 Great Dane still very much a puppy, she's 14 months old. Walking her is torture. She needs to sniff everything, chase every lizzard, catch every squirrel, meet every dog and no amount of training, stopping, turning around and every other trick I was told to try has worked with her for a year. I resist using devices because I often think of my dogs as my children but as another reviewer put it, in the end, no matter how much you love them, they are still animals. I also have another dog to walk at the same time. I put her on about 1 foot of retractable leash and locked it, every time she tried to get ahead of me or pull, I gave it a gentle tug. By the second tug, my Shaya had already figured out that she was no match for that collar and started walking next to me. I did have to tug quite few times and repeat heel during our 40 minute walk, but it was nothing like the normally shoulder dislocating strolls we take. The collar doesn't seem to hurt her either, there were no yelps, no looks of terror or pain, I think the pinch is just uncomfortable enough that she doesn't like the idea of having it repeated. I could not believe I was walking my dogs on either side of me at a nice pace, I barely broke a sweat. By the end of the walk, I gave her 3 feet of leash for about 10 minutes and she barely got ahead of me and only pulled a couple times. A gentle tug and she remembered that she needed to stay put. Size: Perfect for large dogs- I even had to remove one link to get that snug fit and she is big!!! Comfort - she treated it like her regular collar, no change in behavior when I put it on. Ease of use: that's the only bad part, opening the collar is fairly easy, follow the instructions and they open up. Put putting it back on takes a little work. My dog sits still and waits for her gear to be put on but I had to be extremely careful not to pull too hard and either pinch or poke her while putting it on. My suggestion, practice closing the collar before attempting to put it on the dog. They could have done a better job with a clasp or another type mechanism and that's why they get only 4 stars.
