"An emotional and unforgettable read," even for adults!
I have the privilege of teaching B2-level English to a remarkable group of adult women from around the world. This summer, we read Number the Stars together as a book club. One of my students, a native Spanish speaker from Mexico, wrote the following review and gave me permission to share it: "Number the Stars, written by Lois Lowry, is a story that captivates from the very first page. Although it is a work of fiction, it is inspired by real events that took place during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, as well as by childhood memories of the authorโs close friend Anneliseโa name that likely inspired the names of the main character and her sister. The book is lovingly dedicated to her. This novel not only serves as an accessible introduction for young readers to learn about the Holocaust from a personal and relatable point of view, but also offers a deeply human and moving narrative told through the eyes of Annemarie, a Danish girl who unexpectedly finds herself entangled in a web of courage, secrets, and resistance. Lowry masterfully weaves together the tension of historical events with the innocence and bravery of childhood, taking readers on an emotional roller coasterโevoking fear, sorrow, hope, and admiration. Her writing is simple yet powerful, allowing both young and adult readers to connect genuinely with the characters. One of the bookโs greatest strengths lies in its portrayal of heroismโnot as something reserved for soldiers or adults, but as a quality found in ordinary people, even children, who choose to do what is right in the face of danger. More than a history lesson, Number the Stars is a powerful reflection on courage, friendship, and solidarity during dark times. Without a doubt, itโs an emotional and unforgettable read."

A true Classic.
This book is amazingโฆtruly a classic. I remember reading it when I was in elementary school, and now my little one is reading it as well, which makes it extra special. Itโs a shorter story, but very meaningful and in-depth. The book arrived very quickly and came in great condition. So happy to share this classic with the next generatIon.

A Powerful and Moving Story โ A Must-Read Newbery Award Winner!
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is an unforgettable and beautifully written historical novel that everyone should read at least once. This Newbery Award-winning book masterfully captures the bravery, friendship, and resilience of ordinary people during extraordinary times. Set in Nazi-occupied Denmark during World War II, the story follows 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen as she navigates the dangers of war while helping her best friend Ellen, who is Jewish, escape from the Nazis. What makes Number the Stars so powerful is how Lowry tells such a complex and emotionally charged story through the eyes of a young girl. Annemarieโs perspective brings an innocence and clarity to the horrors of war, making the historical events feel personal and relatable, especially for younger readers. The tension is palpable, but Lowry handles difficult topics in a way that is appropriate and thought-provoking for all ages. The relationship between Annemarie and Ellen is the heart of the novel. Their friendship feels genuine and deeply moving, and it highlights themes of courage, loyalty, and the sacrifices we make for those we love. As the story unfolds, Annemarie is forced to confront her own fears and make difficult choices that show the strength of the human spirit. The bravery displayed by her family and the Danish resistance is both inspiring and humbling. Lowryโs writing is clear, engaging, and packed with emotion. She paints a vivid picture of the historical backdrop without overwhelming the reader with too many details, making it accessible to younger readers while still capturing the gravity of the situation. The pacing is perfect, with moments of quiet reflection balanced by scenes of suspense and action. One of the things I appreciated most about Number the Stars is how it teaches important lessons about history, empathy, and moral courage without feeling preachy. Itโs a story of hope and humanity in the face of darkness, and it leaves a lasting impact long after youโve finished reading. In conclusion, Number the Stars is a timeless classic that belongs on every bookshelf. Whether youโre an adult revisiting it or introducing it to a younger reader, this book will move you and open your eyes to the bravery of those who stood up against injustice. Lois Lowry has crafted a story that is both educational and emotionally resonant, making it a must-read for all ages. Highly recommended!

My Review For 7th Grade ELA
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a great book about the history of what happened to the jews in WWII. It takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark, and follows the point of view of Annemarie and her family. She has a friend named Ellen who is Jewish. When the Nazis come looking for Ellen and her family, Annemarieโs family try their best to protect them. What I liked about this book What I liked about this book was how every character had some sort of development. Annemarie for example was just a kid who liked to run and go to school. Once she realized that her best friend was in grave danger she risked her life by running through a forest to get to the boat that her friend and others were on to get to Sweden. I also liked how Peter charactr was written in the book. It was such an impactful moment when I saw that Peter had been in the resistance the whole time and died for all the people of Denmark. I never would have guessed that Peter was in the resistance at the start of the book. He was just a sweet guy who brought gifts to Annemarie and Kirsti. What I didnโt like about the book What I didnโt like about this book was the first couple chapters. In my opinion the first couple of chapters were slow moving and did not capture my interest. By the middle and end of the book, the chapters really caught my interest. Not that theyโre bad, but they were just very slow to start the book. I did like how Annemarie started to catch on to stuff like Mrs. Hirsch and what her dad and uncle were actually talking about by using code words so the children would not get scared. Conclusion In conclusion, Number the stars was a very good book. I liked how the characters developed and my favorite character of the book was Peter. But I didnโt like the first few chapters as much as the ones in the middle and end of the book.

Be Grateful For What You Have
I thought that the book, Number The Stars, by Lois Lowry, was an extraordinary read with a great story plot. Throughout the story, Iearned to be grateful for what I have, because there are other people that barely have freedom. I also learned to be brave for the ones that you love. This is shown throughout the story by the main character, Annemarie Johansen, being frightened, then worried, then brave. Annemarie shows this when the soldiers come into their house, when the soldiers come in when they are having a fake funeral, and brave when she has to talk to the soldiers and think quickly Annemarie is a 12 year-old girl living in 1943 in World War II. Life is hard with Nazis on every corner, but even harder for her best friend, Ellen, who is Jewish. So, the Johansens decide to take in Ellen to be a part of their family. The main character, Annemarie, clearly showed that she was frightened on pages #45-46. Terrified, both girls looked up at the three Nazi officers who entered the room. "(...)" 'Get up!' her ordered. 'Come out here!' Trembling, the two girls rose from the bed and followed him. This clearly shows that Annemarie is frightened. I can prove this by using context clues like the word "Trembling", which is to be so frightened that they are shaking or trembling. The book shows that the main character, Annemarie, is worried in the middle of the book when they are at the fake funeral. "'Why is it not open?' he demanded. 'Let us open it and take one last look at great aunt birte!'" (...) "'Mama!' Annemarie cried. Her mother shook her head quickly, and glared at the open window covered by only the sheer curtain. 'There might still be soldiers outside watching, listening,'" page 86-87. This definitely shows that Annemarie was worried because she cried to her mom and was worried that the soldiers were still outside listening and watching after the incident. The character Annemarie is brave the the end of the book. I can show this when she has to think quickly on her feet when getting the important paper to her uncle. For example, "'Mama what is this?' (...) Mama looked. She gasped. 'Oh, my God'" (...) "'Annemarie, go into the house and get the small basket on the table. Quickly, quickly. Put an apple into it, and some cheese. Put this packet underneath. Do you understand? Hurry.'" (...) "'What are you doing here?' one of them asked." (...) "'My uncle Hendrik forgot his lunch and I'm taking it to him. He's a fisherman.'" (...) ""You came out before daybreak just to bring him lunch? Why doesn't he just eat fish?'" What would Kirsty reply? Annemarie tried to giggle the way her sister might. "'Uncle Henrik doesn't like fish', she said laughing," page 113-114 and 104. This shows that Annemarie is brave because she had to do something very important, and she thought quickly on her feet. Throughout the story, we learned to be grateful for what we have, because some people can be frightened and worried but turn out to be brave and grateful. Overall, I thought that this was a 5 out of 5 stars book: a must read!

Very good to read for world war 2
Number the starts br Lois Lowry is a really beautiful story on how hard it was for kids in the world war 2. If you are in middle school I really recommend reading this book because it takes place in Denmark with a 10 year old girl who needs to help out her friend get away from the nazi army. She really did a good job explaining how the world worked during that time with how much they had to hide them. Annemarie and Ellen really shows you that even though they had a rough time with everything that they still had their best friend. They both had a very tough experience with running into some nazis with her sister and her best friend. Eventually they end up at Annemarieโs uncles house and has to fake a funeral to get everyone their trying to move there. Around midnight the first group of people to leave and go to the uncles boat. This is really good for trying to find out how much people had to suffer and how much they lost like cupcakes. This book is very entertaining and I canโt wait to read it again.

Number The Stars
The story is about two girls Ellen and Annemarie that are best friends, they live in Denmark and goes to the same school. The story takes place during the WW2 .Ellen is Jewish and will have to hide from the Germans. This book is an amazing story because it is about friendship and courage .Te setting during the WW2 makes it quite scary . The main themes are :war, resistance, friendship and courage. The main characters are very brave because they will help others to escape. I learned in the book that it was very hard to live during the Germans occupation : people had hardly any food the Germans were very mean and cruel to the to the Jewish and you had to be very brave to survive. My favorite part is when the family arrives in the uncle 's house in the countryside where there are cows and a cute little kitten! I have a few question for L.Lowry ! Did L.Lowry get her inspiration from a true story? Why did she choose Denmark for the setting ? All and all i think that Number The Stars was the yes book I have ever read.

Amazing!
The book - The cover of the book is as beautiful as the story inside. Font size and page quality are fabulous. The story - This is one of those fantastic books which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The dark side of WWII is toned down for children. It perfectly showcases the magnanimity of certain kind hearted and brave human beings who make the world a better place to live in. The note from the author in the final pages of the book moistens the eye more than the fiction could do. There are elements of reality around which this brilliant story was spun. It is such an unputdownable book that the reader can easily complete it in one sitting.
