Garud Puran

The English version of "Garuda Purana", the most popular religious scripture in “Sanatan Dharma”, was found from Amazon. After reading this book, I found that it is different from other books available in the market. This book is written in very simple language, keeping in mind the time and circumstances of the country. The 22 verses on Sati system ,which was once a bad practice in the society have been replaced by some other appropriate stanzas of other Purana. Apart from this, things have been put in perspective. The verses added later in the texts sometimes get the attention of readers and scholars, but till now, no scholar has dared to amend it, which has been done by the by Shri Joshi. Although, the Hindi version of this revised book is also available in the market. I recommend.सनातन धर्म में सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय ग्रन्थ "गरुड पुराण" का अंग्रेजी संस्करण अमेज़ॉन से मिला. पढ़ने के बाद लगा यह संशोधित ग्रंथ बाजार में उपलब्ध अन्य पुस्तकों से अलग है। देश काल और परिस्थितियों को ध्यान में रखकर लिखी गई यह पुस्तक सरल भाषी भी है। सनातन धर्म की मार्मिक परिभाषा भी दी है। सती कुप्रथा जो कभी समाज में फैली थी उस पर आये करीब 22 श्लोकों के स्थान पर महागरुड पुराण के सटीक श्लोक को स्थान दिया गया है। इसके अलावा भी इस पुस्तक में प्रचलित संस्करण के कई उन विरोधाभाषी पहलुओ इंगित किया जो कि वेदोक्त नहीं है। ग्रंथों बाद में जोड़े गए श्लोकों पर कोई बार पाठकों और विद्वानों का ध्यान जाता है पर इस पर संशोधन करने का साहस अभी तक किसी विद्वानों द्वारा नहीं किया गया जो कि इस पुस्तक के अनुवादक श्री हीरा बल्लभ जोशी ने किया है। हालांकि इस संशोधित पुस्तक का हिंदी संस्करण भी बाजार में उपलब्ध है। आशा है इसपर ऑडियो - वीडियो निकलेगा।

reading the Garud Puran was recommended to me by a priest who has done the last rites of my dear one. I picked this book based on the reviews and ratings. What I liked about this book is the lucid and simple writing style. The book has a detailed introductory chapter where some of the core concepts of Hindu philosophy (like karma, paap, punya) are explained. The chapter is useful as the philosophy of Garud Puran is built upon some of these foundational concepts.I will recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding the significance of the rites performed as per Hindu traditions for the deceased. Many people do it blindly as per the instructions from the priests, but this book explains how the rites are meant to ease the onward journey of the soul.

A must read for all. Many eye-openers!!!
