Be Gone, Flying Spawns of Satan
Advice at bottom:I’ve been using thermacells my whole life for hunting and my friend mentioned how good they were and that he wanted his own. I took to Amazon to get him one as a gift and out of curiosity read the reviews first. It caught me off guard and made me hesitate to see such split star ratings. After reading them, though, I understood AND disregarded the bad reviews and bought it anyway.I would also be critical if I had never used a product and my first experience was with one that didn’t work at all. However, having used these, I know that they’re finicky and do, in fact, just stop working sometimes. Usually they’re just finicky and you can relight it and carry on, but sometimes they truly do just take a crap on you. When they work properly, though, BOY do they work! They’re fantastic at repelling mosquitos, even– and especially– when the mosquitos are dense, hungry, and the size of birds. Not only do you not have to wear any stinky sticky bug spray, but you also don’t have to deal with the mosquitos buzzing all up in your business looking for a spot of skin that you missed. If the thermacell is on, you and your nearby friends can be unbothered completely! In areas that are bad with bugs, you can tell immediately when the gas or flame went out because you’ll suddenly be eaten alive without the peaceful bug haven.Having gone from peace to feast multiple times in these situations, I’ve only come to like thermacells more for how insanely well they work when they work correctly.P.S. they stay lit best if they’re sideways.P.P.S. My dad taught me that the trick if it isn’t lighting is sometimes to not screw the butane cartridge in too tightly. Just until there’s resistance. Also, wait a moment after powering it on to attempt to light it, just like a gas grill. Another trick would be to flip the repellant pads over before tossing them to get more life out of them. Once they ARE toast, it’s easiest to use the new pad itself to push the old one out. Otherwise they’re difficult to fiddle with sometimes. My best advice for those who own or are buying one is— refills of the butane are expensive but you can YouTube how to refill them. Not hard at all, they still work, and it’s MUCH cheaper.Moving around with it isn’t as effective as using it when stationary, like camping, sitting on a porch, in a shed, or in a treestand/nature watching. It’s also not the best with wind or if you’re using a fan for somewhat obvious reasons. The fumes build a bubble of protection around you so that you don’t even get “buzzed”, if you’re stationary. I’ve known all of those things and forgot to mention them, but stand by my 5 stars. If you’ve ever truly been eaten alive (ex: Everglades or Alaska), anything is better than no protection. And this one works.

Perfect Size and it just works.
The media could not be loaded. I’m quite pleased with the size of this portable repeller and its features. This hunt pack includes a camo holster that has pockets to hold an extra fuel tank and extra pads. The belt clip has good tension and will not come off. There is even a slit below the belt clip to view the fuel level. This means you don’t have to remove the tank to check the level. It’s very easy to use. Just turn the switch to the On position, wait about 5 seconds, then press the start button until it clicks. Might have to press a couple times, but so far, once has been enough. As far as the effectiveness of the repellent, it simply works for me. Check out my other reviews on the mosquito and multi-insect versions. In short, Thermacell products are one of the few products that keep mosquitoes away from me. I especially like the multi-insect pads.Overall, with this portable version, you can now keep mosquitoes away everywhere you go. Best of all, the pads and fuel tanks are compatible with their other fuel delivery products.

It actually freakin works!!!
The media could not be loaded. I was seriously skeptical about this product working because I live in the Arkansas swamps basically and nothing stands a chance against the mosquitos we have here. I’ve been doing some early season hunting and have been getting absolutely demolished by them. I took this thing out for the first time today and no lie, I wasn’t bothered by a single mosquito!!! Idk what kind of black magic makes this thing work but it does. Take my money!!! Worth every penny!!!

Works as intended but case could be better
In order to refill the fuel, you have to remove the case. The problem is that the belt clip makes it very difficult to get the case on and off. Also, the biner attachment is in a stupid location. I'm happy with the functioning of the Thermacell itself, but I nearly threw the case away because it's so poorly designed.

Unbelievable
I can’t believe it i’m a hunter and this thing is amazing. I live in the swamps of Florida. I didn't get one mosquito even come close to me. And a bear walked within 50 yards of me didn’t even know i was there. Make sure you push the clip all the way up for the belt clip till it snaps in place. Fit right on my belt and went hunting no issues.

I was a sceptic. Not anymore.
When I saw this for the first time, I was a huge sceptic. I could not believe that the Thermacell could make that much of a difference. It seems like the "device" version of those mosquito coils from the 60's. I am now a true believer. I spent a week in the BWCA with one of these units. Place on of these next to the latrine 5 to 10 minutes before you have to go. I literally saw ONE mosquito compared to the swarm that attacked me when I first got there. The entire trip was like that. If you are going to be stationary, and there isnt a big wind blowing, fire this baby up and within 10-15 minutes your will see a huge change in the mosquito population in your vicinity.Since it relies on spreading a scent, it's not great for windy days, but the buggers don't do well in wind anyway, so nothing to worry about.
