Lansky Puck - Dual Grit Multi-Purpose Sharpener - Blade & Tool Sharpener

This is a great little puck to keep around and sharpen up any blade you might need because once you learn how to use it properly, you can put a hair-shaving edge on blades within a couple minutes! I would check out YouTube for a demonstration because once you see it and try it, you'll get the hang of it fast. It's really easy to use, I promise! Personally, I always have trouble keeping the blade at a proper angle when I'm trying to use a flat sharpening stone at a table. Instead of taking the blade to the stone, it makes a lot of intuitive sense to take the stone to the blade instead! It's easier to sharpen that way and more fun! So once this came in the mail and I learned to use it, I started putting dangerously sharp edges on all the things! Even on my Moraknivs Lol not just tools such as lawn mower or axe. This puck is really diverse in its applications, and easy to use, in that way! My fiance was skeptical, but he asked me to sharpen his knife for him and 5 minutes later, he had to admit that the Lansky puck did a really good job! I purchased this puck specifically to sharpen and maintain a Tramontina machete, and it has done marvelously in that regard. Traditionally, those types of machetes come a little unfinished, so the owner can modify to their specific needs, so it came without an edge. This Lansky puck was a dream to use, it's actually really zen to sit there with it rubbing the edge of the blade, and hear the way it rings when you have the angle right. I was able to put a hair-shaving edge on that machete. It took a little while for the first time but maintenance after that has been very quick. When I am able, I will be picking up more of these pucks to keep around. They're best used with either water or oil. If you choose water for a stone, stick to water, and if you choose to use blade oil, then stick with that. You can use them dry but it's not a very comfortable experience to do so. They're a fantastic value for the money, as they're inexpensive, effective, efficient, and easily portable!

I purchased this puck sharpener to use on my hatchets and axes. They get dull pretty fast when used a lot. I used to use a file which did a good job. Then I saw this sharpening stone and thought I would try it. It does a great job with dual grit. Now it goes everywhere with my tools that can be sharpened. It’s pretty easy to use with no instructions needed. I purchased mine a couple of years ago and can’t remember what I paid for it. But whatever it was I’m glad I’ve got it. Recommend it.

This is a pretty good stone. I like the dual grits because let's face it, not everything we sharpen needs the same kind of edge or starts from the same degree of dullness. You can use it dry, with honing oil or with water. Over many years I have found that water works best with a stone this coarse, (actually, my father taught me that and I just simply verified what he told me over the years). Using it dry will cause premature wear and your stone will not last as long as it could. So choose whether you can work best with honing oil or water. Even though this stone has what it calls a medium grit, it's still not nearly as smooth and hard as an Arkansas stone or something of that nature that normally requires oil. If you use oil on this stone, it will clog the pores and eventually have an affect on how well it does its job. Water on the other hand does just as well or better and does not clog. It washes out and the stone can stay clean for the next time you need it. As far as being messy I have not found that to be a problem. A small amount of oil or water is all you need anyway, and you can always add more when you need it. Just enough to cover the surface of the stone is all that is necessary and when it dries up or soaks in, just add some more. It's not that complicated. Clean it after each use to keep the surface fresh and get rid of metal particles that will collect.

I have a bench grinder & have for probably 15 years, I love it to sharpen mover blades and a variety of car restoration things. So when I saw the PUCK I was curious, especially with its outstanding reviews. I ordered it up & upon arrival quickly put it to use on some bypass lopers that I’ve tried to sharpen on my bench grinder without much success. The puck made quick work of the edge, 1st using the course then the fine sides. The 45 degree edge of the puck allowed me to get deep into the joint of the lopers which I’d never been able to do without complete disassembly of the lopers. When done I could easily cut paper with the blade edge of the lopers! I was very impressed with it. Next I took my small one hand hatchet put in my bench vise & did the same procedure, course then fine honing. I should mention I did this with out any oil, just dry stone. I did the instructions circular motion on the edge as before with the bypass lopers. When both sides were done it too could cut paper! What next? I was on a role & scrounging for something to sharpen.... while I didn’t find the Gerber 18” bush knife to try next I have to say I am very impressed. The one thing I did try without much success was an old worn & chipped mower blade. However to be fair I didn’t try too hard because I have the bench grinder which I use to sharpen the mower blades on. I will try it after the bench grinder to see if I can make it razor sharp as my mower has alway torn the blades of grass vs cut them off. We’ll see how that works in a few months when winter leaves Montana. Note: this stone would also be excellent for sharpening your shovels, like a spade shovel. If you have never sharpened on try it and you will be surprised how easy it cuts thru dirt, sod, roots, etc. thus making easier work in the yard. I strongly recommend this item & have already told a couple buddies to get one!

So I bought this for my newer Fiskar Axe. I have a poor spine/cervical cord. I needed a darn good axe to get some kindling and such at times. Anyways, I was quite upset I goofed up and split some "split" wood for kindling w/o my round-chopping block a pal gave me. The rocks below chipped up a very sharp edge to begin with (great axe BTW). I considered having it done at ACE or such... (hardware store). I am more of a do it myself guy even with my spent spine. This stone fit the bill. Perhaps the oil is smart to have and I have it and used it- but... I can simply say i you put about 10 minutes into a decent head, you will a nice edge. With the axe I have now (I cannot use my heavy maul now)- it cuts up the pieces I have simply so I have my kindling or something useable- I heat my home with wood. I don't do much wood splitting now- I cannot and pay for it. BUT- a sharp blade with the right type of axe/splitter truly makes a difference. I love being able to get the edge to the way I want and it works quite well. Not hard effort. Simply a rounding process with focus on the edges that perhaps one may have "nipped". I love this rock and it does the trick. I trust it more than taking it to a commercial store that will simply machine it. I think you will be happy. If not, I guess I don't know squat- lol. Been around a bit so I think I am calling this one right.

Worked well for sharpening my axe and hatchet after initial prep with a mill file. High quality and looks like it should last a lifetime.

I used to use one of these for touching up axes in the field. I keep it wrapped up in an oil soaked rag, inside of two zip lock bags. It's good for quick touch ups and working out chips/knicks, but I've since switched over to using 1/3 of a Japanese water stone, small file, and small strop in the field. I can get axes back back shaving sharp using this kit in under 10 minutes, whereas the lansky puck will never get an edge shaving/razor sharp (admittedly, not that it ever needs to be). Japanese water stones also cut much faster than the lansky which was a big reason that I made the switch(although the lansky will last 50x as long, so don't bank on needing to buy another unless you lose it). All in all, it's good at what it's designed to do, and I used one for a while before finding a better method in the field with good results. It's definitely a good item to have on hand, especially for axes, and is compact enough enough keep in your back pocket, but if you're looking to achieve a scary sharp edge, there are better tools for the job. I still use a variety of whet and arkansas stones in my shop at home, but the puck no longer has a use to me. That being said, for its price point and functionality, it's still a 5 star tool.

Great for touch ups and at the current price point

Super Schleifstein. Sehr praktisch um mal schnell die Axt, das Beil oder auch das Messer unterwegs nachzuschärfen. Durch seine geringe Größe (Handtellergröße) passt er super in ein EDC- oder Daypack. Für ganz feines Schleifen ist er natürlich nicht so super geeignet, auch aufgrund seiner immer noch recht groben "feinen" Körnung. Wer sein Messer oder seine Axt, sein Beil "rasiermesserscharf" haben möchte sollte zu einem DC4 Schleifstein greifen und zum guten alten Lederstreifen. Wer einfach sein Werkezueg scharf haben möchte oder mal eine Scharte aus einer Klinge herausarbeiten will unterwegs, für den ist der Lansky Puck eindeutig die richtige Wahl. Für Outdoor-Fans ein unverzichtbares Muss.

Habia visto varios videos en Youtube sobre esta piedra, es un poco mas pequeña de lo que esperaba. Pero vale la pena cada centavo (la compre a $112), desbasta mas que las que vende truper y urrea (solo las Austromex estan a su altura). Se acomoda a tu mano y lo mejor que no tiene un desgaste disparejo en comparacion con las rectangulares, la puedes guardar en la mochila o en la caja de heramientas, sin tener miedo a que se rompa. Solo que debes usar aceite (ligero como el 3 en 1 o el singer) o queroseno para lubricar la piedra, porque absorbe el agua facilmente (es muy poroso el material). La recomiendo mucho para un scout o jardinero, ya que afila las hachas y machetes e incluso las tijeras muy rapido. NOTA: USA GUANTES DE CUERO Y SER MUY CUIDADOSO CON TUS DEDOS PORQUE FACILMENTE PUEDES PASAR TU DEDO POR EL FILO DE LA HEREMIENTA, USA MOVIMIENTOS CIRCULARES AL AFILAR.

As duas faces são mais agressivas do que eu desejava. Comprei apesar de não haver especificações da descrição do produto, então, decidi correr o risco de não ficar satisfeito. E, honestamente, não fiquei! Se você deseja apenas afiar e não se importa que ambas as faces sejam bem abrasivas, esta é uma boa opção para você. Porém, se sua ideia for a de, além de afiar, também polir o fio de sua faca, machado ou ferramenta, melhor buscar outra opção/modelo.

Good product but slightly heavy to carry in the field, I wish they made something a bit smaller.
