Jazz, Rags & Blues Book 1(Alfred's Basic Piano Library)

My 10 year old grandson enjoyed learning these songs. He felt that they were challenging, but not too complicated to master. He said the book is good for people who are familiar with Rag-Time pieces.

I love having pieces in different styles for my students, and this book is full of fun, accessible, and well-graded pieces in a wide variety of styles. I especially love her rags, because they are excellent precursors to Joplin as far as style and character, but composed with small hands in mind. Unlike other collections, which seem like watered-down or overly-simplified arrangements of more advanced repertoire (also usually full of inaccurate rhythms and unmusical shortcuts), this collection is made up of actual compositions written for pianists at each particular level. They make great recital pieces, and are extremely helpful for teaching rhythms, bass lines (and working on LH technique), and chords. This series complements any method book and is extremely reasonably priced for the amount of music in it.

The book came in good quality (no torn pages, or writings on the pieces). Only issue was there was no CD.

Martha Miers is a major miracle. These smart arrangements are fun to play, accessible, challenging (for the brave beginner or the rusty early intermediate player alike), and like all good music, these pieces change with your mood -- at times foot-tapping, mysterious, brooding or just punchy. This book can be the start of a musical journey and is perfect to accompany a more thorough program of instruction, such as Alfred's adult all-in-one series.

Anything by Martha Mier is worthwhile, but this series is exceptional. I'm not trained in jazz, but these books have helped me live playing jazz.

I am an 80 year old beginner struggling to learn jazz piano and I bought this book on the recommendation of my 16 year old grandson. It is great and easy to understand. A great advantage of the book is that it has a code allowing you to download the songs and play them at different speeds which is a great help when starting from scratch. Also the book is so well known that there are many musicians playing the numbers on YouTube - again a great help.
