Superbad (Unrated, Extended Cut)

It is amazing how much a quality blu ray transfer can enhance a film and it is even rarer for blu ray to greatly enhance a comedy film. But SUPERBAD becomes an even more exhilirating expreience due to blu ray. If you love the movie then you know all the great aspects of it from Judd Apatow's production and Greg Mottola's directing to the career making performances from Jonah Hill and Michael Cera. What could have just been an over the top teen comedy with crude and rude sex and jokes becomes instead a bawdy over the top teen comedy that is realistic, true to life and irresistible. It is hilarious and yes, there is sex and crude humor but it all has a purpose and this film is comedy at its best. Seth Rogen wrote the script and his brand of humor along with the gifts of Judd Apatow is starting a whole line of new, inventive comedies. This film also manages to be very endearing and show the realities of teen hardships, friendship and love and what pubescent years are really like. I was amazed when I popped in the blu ray disc. It was my 5th time viewing this film and in the opening shot Jonah Hill is cruising forward in a red car and the color was so crisp, the video so enhanced and clear that I was stunned. Throughout the film, be it day or night, inside or out, the film shines and never loses its intense detail. The video is in 1080p high definition and delivers throughout. I never realized how awesome the soundtrack to this film was. Songs are used to great effect and they will soar out of all surround speakers and set a scene that is amazing. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 delivers. I found watching this film on blu ray with my home theater system to be so much better than seeing it at the movies. Dialogue is strong and vibrant and combined with the music you can't help but feel joyous. There is a second disc with over 2 hours of hilarious extras and I watched it all. I am so pleased with this purchase and found this blu ray transfer to be one of the best I've ever seen and definitely the very best of a comedy. I am a huge fan of SUPERBAD and all involved and am thrilled that blu ray made the viewing experience even more memorable. Rude, crude, heartwarming and hilarious this film is the best. Do yourself a favor and experience it on blu ray.

I don't think that I'm the target audience for this movie - I'm a 48 year old woman - yet I have to say that I really love this film. It's true that the humor is sometimes sophomoric - if that - but it also I think really captures the astonishing difficulty of being an 18 year old trying to navigate the beginning of adulthood. I love that the two guys at the center love each other and are there for each other - their relationship, their deep friendship (which they can barely admit or discuss because of the constraints imposed by our culture on male behavior) is at the heart of this film and grounds and centers it. The women - oddly enough in a movie in which the characters are SO focused on getting laid - are really honestly and sympathetically done; their role in the movie is not just to be "hot babes" or show skin; the movie really cares about what they think and how they feel. And in addition to real characters who act like teenagers, the movie boasts some outrageous humor. I've watched this several times, with my husband that 16-year old daughter and it's something that we all really enjoy. So, even if you're not a 15 - 25 year old boy, give it a chance if you're willing to be shocked (and amused) and if you don't mind a lot of very direct talk about sex and a lot of cursing.

If you've enjoyed "Superbad" in theaters, then I strongly recommend checking out "Superbad" Unrated Edition. The raunchy teen comedy is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen format with more unrated footage that wasn't included in its theatrical release. The picture quality is surprisingly good with no obvious flaws. The 5.1 Dolby Digital sound is clear and well balanced. Among supplemental material, the DVD includes 8 minutes of deleted scenes, trailers, a short gag reel, "Cop Car Confessions" and "The Making of Superbad" featurettes, an exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming comedy "Pineapple Express" and an audio commentary with director Greg Mottola, production crew and cast members. Overall, "Superbad" Unrated Edition scores a "B+".

I could quite easily and unregrettedly say that Superbad is my favourite comedy movie of all time. This movie is just full of hilarious content, how anyone could disagree baffles me, I've seen this film 10 times but still laugh out loud at certain moments... The main reason I love this movie is because it is awkward. Yes, awkward. By that I mean that both the writers the the actors do an amazing job of creating some amazingly awkward scenes - and we all know that awkward moments are hilarious when we're not involved. I believe this was Jonah Hills first major part in a movie and I'm convinced it's what got him his recognition, and rightly so. There's too much hilarious content to explain, so just go watch it, please do, you won't regret it.
