CBGB looks at New York's dynamic punk rock scene through the lens of the ground-breaking Lower East Side club started by eccentric Hilly Kristal in 1973 originally as a home for "country, bluegrass and blues" (thus the club's name) and which showcased cutting-edge bands through its closing in 2006. The Talking Heads, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Blondie, The Dead Boys, Bad Brains, Green Day, Soul Asylum, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Everclear, George Thorogood, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Black Crowes, The Flaming Lips, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The B-52s, The Runaways, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tool and The Wallflowers are just some of the thousands of bands that played the club over the years. Review: WAM BAM - THIS IS A MINDBLOWING FILM!!! - Love, love, love this film. Amazing true story. If you love rock and roll, as I do, the story about the incredible bar in New York that launched many, many bands. Those portraying various bands are excellent. The famous club owner himself is portrayed incredible! Great cast. AWSOME music. Mind-blowing story. Damn...this is one of the GREATEST films about rock and roll ever created! What took me so long to discover this film??? Review: For a fan of the film or interested in Alan Rickman's final leading roles. - *CBGB* attempts to tell the chaotic, influential, and ultimately bittersweet story of Hilly Kristal (played by Alan Rickman) and his legendary New York City club, which became the crucible for the American punk, new wave, and rock scenes in the 1970s. While the story and cast are compelling, the film itself has faced significant criticism from fans and critics for its tone and accuracy. The Blu-ray release, however, is a technically competent presentation of the source material. ### ๐ฅ Video Quality (Solid but Stylized) * **Transfer:** The film arrives on Blu-ray with an AVC encoded 1080p high-definition transfer, presented in the 2.40:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The transfer is generally considered **sharp and clean**, showing good detail. * **The Look:** The filmmakers intentionally employ a highly stylized aesthetic, frequently using **comic-book style panels, onscreen text, and vibrant colors** to frame the action. This stylistic choice is polarizing; some find it a fun homage to *Punk* magazine, while others find it distracting and a poor fit for the gritty subject matter. * **Atmosphere:** To reflect the grimy New York setting, some scenes, particularly those inside the club, are intentionally lit to look grubby and dark. Despite this stylistic intent, the black levels are strong, and the overall detail holds up. ### ๐ Audio Quality (The Highlight) * **Lossless Audio:** The Blu-ray typically features a **DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track**, which is a high-point of the release, as expected for a movie centered on music. * **Music First:** The iconic punk and rock tracks that form the heart of the film (including music from Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, and more) sound **excellent, full, and energetic**, filling the soundstage with good depth and range. * **Mix:** Dialogue is clear, and the overall sound mix is well-balanced, ensuring the music hits hard without drowning out the story. ### ๐ Special Features (A Standard Offering) The special features on the *CBGB* Blu-ray are relatively modest, but they offer some insight into the production: * **Audio Commentary:** A commentary track featuring Director/Producer Randall Miller, Writer/Producer Jody Savin, and Producer Brad Rosenberger. This is the most substantial extra for those interested in the film's making-of process. * **Deleted Scenes:** A small collection of short deleted scenes. * **Outtakes:** A short reel of bloopers and on-set moments. ### Final Verdict | Rating | Category | | **โญโญโญ / 5** | **Overall Blu-ray Technicals** | | **โญโญโญ / 5** | **Video Transfer** | | **โญโญโญโญ / 5** | **Audio Quality** | | **โญโญ / 5** | **Special Features** | The **CBGB Blu-ray is a well-made disc for a divisive movie.** It faithfully presents the film's unique (and controversial) visual style with strong clarity and delivers a superb audio experience that lets the legendary soundtrack shine. If you are a fan of the film or interested in Alan Rickman's final leading roles and the historical subject matter, this Blu-ray is the best technical presentation available. If you have strong, negative feelings about the movie's cartoony approach, the excellent transfer won't change your mind about the film itself.

A welcome addition to the collection
Saw this movie with my family on Christmas 2018. It's one of those memories that sticks with me because we hosted that Family Christmas at our house, it was our first time hosting. And we all sat down to breakfast and watched CBGB. The Punk rock scene and the story told in here brought my family together and we have very fond memories of that day watching this film, including that our late Grandfather LOVED this movie. Aside from the personal connection. It is an excellent character study of real people and a snapshot of a time that once was and now has passed. Such a blast. and buying this Bluray has been a welcome addition to my film collection.

Awesome!
If you're a music lover then you definitely need to see this movie. I love seeing how bands get discovered and how they became famous. I very highly recommend this to everybody even if you're not the biggest music lover. This movie is done really well. The story telling and acting is very good. Please buy this movie or rent it. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
