The copyright on this is 2018. I had forgotten that part until I started skimming the book and saw Figure 8.6 reference a "2014 Smartphone OS graph". There may be a lot of valid basics in this book when it comes to security; but for me, at the current time, 2014 is TEN years ago now. Not to mention how much changes in the tech world. I know a lot of basics when it comes to cybersecurity (have some GIAC certs, passed the CISSP [but not enough work experience], was a CCNA, etc.), and I personally want books with much more current information, even if covering the basics.

I took it upon myself to find out who the authors are: Charles J. Brooks, Christopher Grow, Philip Craig, Donald Short are recognized experts in the field of security. They provide a solid foundation on which readers can identify their place within the cybersecurity realm and start their path towards certification. From security and surveillance fundamentals to intrusion detection and remote access protection, this book covers the necessary pillars to build an effective defense against cyber threats. I give it a well-deserved 5 stars because, in my opinion and with 20 years of experience in the digital world, it stands out for its clarity, the excellent use of grammar, and the effectiveness of quizzes to test knowledge. Although having some background knowledge is beneficial to fully appreciate the book, its well-written structure and practical exercises make "Cybersecurity Essentials" an indispensable tool for those who wish to enter or advance in the field of cybersecurity.
