NieR: Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition (PS4)

Great game. Unfortunately the version sent to me was an import from the UK so none of the DLC works in my region which is the US. Make sure you buy one for your region otherwise none of the DLC will work. Other than that at start of the game there is no save options so it makes you start all over again unless you can beat the first part. If you cant make thru the first part then an easy option is to set the game to easy, then once you get past reset to normal or hard. Once your past the first part then you can activate all save functions. Visually the game is impressive for its age. You can see where Stellar Blade got its idea from. In fact Nier could have been what Stellar Blade is if they decided to make a new game which is too bad but at least some of the content is available to Stellar Blade as an addon.

This is a story that can only be told correctly through the medium of a videogame. While the game starts out like a action genre blend that is tough to put down. The story creeps up on you. I cannot give this game enough praise.

I'm only four hours in (and I'll try to remember to update this review when I complete it), but the game lives up to the hype so far. The real reason I'm writing this now is to give American gamers a heads up if they plan to buy it new: DO NOT BUY THE PEGI 18 VERSION OF THIS GAME IF YOU WANT TO REDEEM THE CODE FOR THE DLC AND YOU LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES. The PEGI version is the European version and Sony won't allow you to redeem the code for the DLC (and there's quite a bit) if you live in the U.S. I made that mistake because it never occurred to me that DLC would be region locked. I had to buy a DLC bundle for $10 from the PlayStation online store (and it doesn't even have all of the items). Learn from my mistake. Buy the U.S. "Rated M for Mature" version.

However, some reviewers found the story to be convoluted and difficult to understand. The game also drew criticism for some visual and technical problems. The PC release drew a mixed response due to technical issues that were not officially addressed until 2021. Overall, NieR: Automata is a criminally underrated JRPG hybrid with a passable story, unique storytelling structure, excellent gameplay, and an inspired soundtrack. It is a must-play for fans of action RPGs and those looking for a unique gaming experience.
