A sweeping tale of love and honor, tragedy and triumph set against the Spanish conquest of Mexico, THE MASK OF ZORRO stars Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas. After twenty years as the legendary Zorro, Don Diego (Hopkins) must transform a troubled drifter (Banderas) into the fearless hero he once was. Review: Great movie! - Jaci loves this movie and only had it on an old VHS tape. Nice to have a replacement! Review: One of the Best! - This version of Zorro easily surpasses earlier editions including the one with Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell. Anthony Hopkins portrays the older Zorro fighting injustice. His wife is killed, his home burned, his daughter captured by Don Raphael Montero, and he is imprisoned. The Montero returns, Hopkins wins his freedom, earlier Antony Banderas as a youth and his brother watch Zorro in action. Banderas brother is killed by a cavalry officer patterned after Custer who along with the Montero wants an independent California, and with mined gold wants to bribe General Santa Anna and set up an independent republic. Banderas is trained by Hopkins as a younger version of Zorro. Ghastly scene as Banderas confronts Matt Letscher who shows him his brother's head and hand in a jar of alcohol. A young Catherine Zeta Jones plays the love interest, she is actually Hopkin's daughter. Great action scenes filled with excellent sword fighting as Banderas is caught in the hacienda. Loved the dancing and great costumes as Banderas is invited to alcade's hacienda with Hopkins as his valet. Great climax as Banderas and Hopkins go to the gold mine to confront the enemy along with Catherine Zeta Jones. Behind the scenes extras are excellent. Banderas also does an excellent job as Shrek's sidekick. Great fun and exciting adventure, this is the best, the sequel not as good.

Superbit Deluxe release: Stunning anamorphic video & surround sound
"The Mask of Zorro", released in 1998, was the first of two "new" Zorrro movies, the later entry being "The Legend of Zorro". Not only is the "Mask" highly entertaining--how could you go wrong with a cast that includes Anthony Hopkins (who plays the 'first' Zorro), Antonio Banderas (who takes over the Zorro role and is trained by Hopkins), and gorgeous Catherine Zeta-Jones? There is plenty of action (some great sword fighting scenes, but being PG-13, no profanity and minimal gore--but the villians finally get their just due at the end), humor, romance, some history (how much of the setting and events in the 1820s-1840s colonial California is acccurate is questionable--but who cares? This is fiction), beautiful sets, a decent plot, and great performances by the entire cast. The "Superbit Deluxe Collection", a two-disc set, presents a stunning anamorphic widescreen transfer of this movie to DVD, with equally stellar DTS surround sound. The picture is flawless, crystal clear and free of any defects with fantastic color saturation. I could not believe this was not a high-definition DVD, the picture looked that good. Just as excellent is the DTS sound which filled the room. Superbit, a Sony technology and a forerunner of Blu Ray, has been discontinued. It's a shame because Superbit DVDs can be played on regular DVD players. There is enhanced image resolution and sound on Superbit DVDs. I watched this DVD on my large-screen, high-definition TV, played on a Toshiba HD DVD player. You must have either a high-defintion DVD player or a high-quality DVD player than can "upconvert" the sound and image to see the advantage of Superbit. The Toshiba HD DVD players are quite good at this, as are the more recent Blu Ray players. There are also a number of new "upconverting" regular DVD players as well. I bought a used copy of this movie from Amazon at a great price. Get a Superbit version of this movie while the supply lasts. You will not be disappointed with the picture and sound quality. Highly recommended!

a great adventure film
This movie is an excellent adventure film and was my second experience with Zorro(my first was The Legend of Zorro the sequel to this movie) and is vastly superior to its sequel. Each character was portrayed perfectly by their actor especially Alejandro who i personally liked more than i did De La Vega whom was mind you portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. Another key element that was done excellently was the filming whenever the sword fights were taking place(which were a key element in this movie) they were very high paced and well shot making them very fun to watch. overall this movie was very well done and if you like action or adventure movies i highly recommend that you give this one a shot.

The Mask of Zorro DVD.
This is one of my favorite movies. This movie was filmed in Mexico. Some scenes filmed at an out-of-the way beach where I have done scuba diving. Antonio Banderas is trained by the original Zorro, and he makes a very handsome Zorro. I received my order very quickly, and I have already watched it.

Blu-ray is good, but...
That this is the best Zorro presentation ever produced, a stylish romance-adventure, lavishly whipped into a great story with enhancing action sequences, is likely not in dispute until a superior production supercedes it, and I do love it. The producers and artists are to be congratulated. However, the Blu-ray version, while of equal quality to a theater experience when viewed on a quality HD flat screen (I have the latest LG 42in 120Hz model), is not sufficiently improved over the DVD release, when played through an upconverting Blu-ray DVD player (as I have--a CDW top-rated LG model), to justify the cost trade-off of selling the DVD to acquire the Blu-ray. But if you're looking at only a few dollars difference to get the Blu-ray over sale of a first purchase of the lower-priced, but only slightly lower-quality DVD, then I say go for it. But if I could have previewed the Blu-ray before selling my DVD version to acquire it, I probably would have kept the DVD and saved the money. Sorry. But do own one of them. "The Mask of Zorro" is a movie classic, fun to watch, like fencing practice, again and again.

“Children should never have to see the things we do.” Governor Mendoza] This 1998 adventure comedy tells the tale of Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) who escapes from his prison of 20 years to reclaim his daughter Eléna (Catherine Zeta Jones), who was taken from him as a baby, by Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), the governor of the region, to be brought up in Spain. Now aged, Zorro trains a vagabond Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to take on his mantle and win back his daughter who has no knowledge of him and thwart Montero’ evil schemes. From the outset this swashbuckler adventure dazzles with it’s large scale setting and action sequences. A simple tale of Good vs Evil with over the top heroics and stunning stunts. The beautiful cinematography creates an heroic atmosphere and all tinged with a wry, dry humour and romance. The disc offers languages and audio set up [English 5.1 or German 5.1], subtitles [15 languages, mainly European but also Hebrew and Hindi], scene selections, extra features [directors commentary, making of, deleted scene, us trailer] and play. The action is fast paced, the music lively and jolly like the script and the cast is perfect. There is definite chemistry between the three leads who all turn in very credible performances as do the supports. What’s not to like? This is a PG and the only offence is the slapstick ‘adventure’ style violence, there’s no swearing, no nudity and no sex. Fantastic family fun, and plenty of laughs, provided you let yourself enter into the spirit of it all.
