Review: Comes with a learning curve, but otherwise simple! - This is one of those cookbooks that I bought and ended up using more than I expected. I own a couple of big boxes with cooking recipe magazines and I thought I had seen it all, but boy was I wrong! I can't really say much about the whole30 component, because I never really wanted to do the diet to the letter, I just wanted some healthier and carb-free recipes to add to my collection. If you're looking to give new ingredients a try, there is a little bit of a learning-curve for this book, I found that despite owning (what I thought was) a large and diverse amount of spices, I found that the first couple of trips to the supermarket ended up being more expensive than originally planned because I bought so many sauces and spices. Garam masala was a challenge for me. I couldn't find it anywhere in my town so I had to order it online! The recipes are simple enough and some are clearly better than others. The main issue with the recipes here is that if you live in a small town like myself, you're going to have a hard time finding the more exotic ingredients (like decent celery root). But if you're willing to substitute every now and then, I think most of these recipes are pretty simple and have great taste and are substantial meals that make you feel full. This isn't a "eat salad every day" book, which is a great plus for a carb-free diet book in my opninion! Review: Book is great - I like the recipes in this book and the overview for people who could be new to the program. I just wish the seller of this used book had so disclosed that someone scribbled with a black marker on the cover. I got most of it off with some rubbing alcohol, but not all of it. The book content itself is great. Therefore, 5 stars.

Should have been titled "Whole30 Fast, Easy, & Sooooo Delish!"
Who likes to cook and eat yummy food? I do! Who likes to make two separate meals every night (one for me, one for my kids)? I don't! For some time, I've been wondering how to economically nourish my whole family (7 of us) with meals that we can ALL eat (AND not spend too much time in the kitchen). Melissa Hartwig's "Whole30 Fast & Easy" is proving itself to be an excellent solution for us! After receiving the book, I read through all the recipes, marked the ones I thought my kids would like, and then had my pickiest eater (8 year-old son) look through the recipes I selected and pick the meals he thought looked good. I was very pleased that he chose 54 new recipes for our family to try! :) I put together a 30-day dinner menu and purchased ingredients for the first week (which is coming to and end as I right this review). Because I already had on hand many of the ingredients in the recipes we chose, I only spent $35 for 6 nights of dinners (+1 night of leftovers) for our family of 7. That is awesome and so far, EVERY RECIPE I'VE MADE HAS BEEN SOOOOO DELICIOUS!!!! My kids have been willing to try the new recipes because it wasn't just me that picked them out and they have also found them to be yum! I usually try about 5 recipes from a cookbook before I make up my mind about whether or not it's a keeper. This one is definitely a keeper! The meals I've made using this book have been super yum AND satisfying (which means NOT food without breaks). This is what I've made so far: p. 165 Hearty Chinese Egg Drop Soup - I was hesitant to make this at first, but it turned out really great! Who knew? p. 139 Roasted Sausages with Potatoes & Cabbage - I doubled the potatoes and roasted them on a separate baking pan than the sausages and cabbage (perks of having a double oven). This was surprisingly filling! My hubby beat me to the left-overs the next day! p. 171 Green Chili Pork Stew - Super yum! My kids suggested I add carrots next time. I enjoyed the left-overs! p. 193 Italian Beef Soup - So, so good, but NOT food without breaks. Very satisfying! Next time I'll double the recipe so we can have leftovers. p. 121 Roasted Potato and Kale Hash with Eggs - Superb! The spices really work well on the potatoes and the eggs make it satisfying! So delish!!! Tonight we're going to try the Thai Chicken Sweet-Potato-Noodle Bowls on p. 160. I've given an A+ to all of those recipes I've tried and I am really looking forward to making more "Fast & Easy" meals for ALL my family! Melissa Hartwig's book should have been titled "Whole30 Fast, Easy, & Sooooo Delish!"

Good recipes even if not following Whole30 ...
I'm not doing Whole30 -- but I'm always looking for cookbooks that feature fast/easy recipes made from whole ingredients, and this book does just that. "Whole foods" to me are the ones that you find mostly around the perimeter of the supermarket -- fresh produce, dairy/butter/eggs, meat, poultry, seafood, etc. And putting together a tasty nutritious meal using just a few of those isn't that complicated. Every time I review a cookbook, I make at least three recipes from the book to get a sense of how the recipes are structured, level of detail, etc. I did the same with this one, and I found no major issues with the way the material is presented. The first recipe I tried was the Sheet Pan Shrimp with Sesame Broccoli. I cut the recipe in half (I'm single, live alone, and cook for one person 99% of the time. This was the first time I'd used coconut aminos and it is indeed very close to soy sauce in flavor although a little sweeter. I followed the recipe exactly -- broccoli cooked first, then added the shrimp for another 10 minutes. I had enough for two servings so i had one for supper and the other the next day for lunch, reheated gently in the microwave. Nice dish, will definitely make again. The next dish was the Seared Salmon Filets with Ginger Caramelized Pineapple. Again, I halved the recipe to make 2 servings. I live in a part of the country where fresh salmon is abundant and not too expensive, so I have it often (usually once a week). For this recipe, I used fresh pineapple . Another winner. I think it really needs the green onion at the end to cut through some of the sweetness of the pineapple -- or possibly a bit of diced jalapeño would do it. I'll play with it the next time I make this. The third recipe was the Spicy Seared Chicken with Watermelon-Spinach Salad. The chicken is seared with some seriously spicy-garlicky rub. I used skinless boneless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts for this and cooked both of them at the same time, reserving one for another serving the next day. Then I made the salad with 1/2 the listed ingredients. It has a plain oil-and-vinegar dressing, but the spice and garlic in the chicken adds a kick, and the watermelon provides just the right amount of cooling. I might try adding something to the dressing (lime juice? I think it needs a little acid and more flavor than just vinegar). Overall, I'm quite happy with this book. There are only a handful of the recipes that I know I won't make --- most of the rest are interesting enough that I'll probably use them at some point. Solid four stars: I like it!

Wowza! I can't Believe it's not butter
Let me just start by saying, I AM not good at cooking. Nor did my parent ever teach me but, like every one here, I want to be healthy( or healthier LOL). It was hard not knowing how to season food or how to what technique to use. My food tasted gross and finding a decent recipe was like looking for a needle in a hay stack. I soon resorted to fast food time and time again.. I bought this cookbook because of a recommendation and OMG. I. AM. IN. LOVE. You guys, these recipes are fast, simple and nutritious! All the ingredients you can find America. I usually have trouble finding certain spices and ingredients from other recipe books that aren't available in my county but, I did not have that problem with this cookbook. It' simplicity is amazing. Really takes you back to simple, uncomplicated cooking. No fancy appliance needed. I found it easy to follow the directions and it was very versatile. It was easy to substitute an ingredient to your preference and make it customizable. It has been my savings grace! I would TOTALLY order it again if I ever my copy.

Actually usable cookbook for the average person-- absolutely essential for Whole30
First and foremost, this is far better than the regular cookbook that was initially made by the folks at Whole30. Most of the recipes consist of ingredients that are not exotic, are generally easy to get at your local grocery store, and are probably already made up of must-haves (ghee, coconut aminos) that Whole30 asks you to have. Some of the recipes have been incredibly quick to make-- I just made a baked salmon with cherry tomatoes and fennel and it took hardly 20-30 minutes to go from getting home from the grocery to in my belly (not to mention how delicious it was). I haven't made a lot of the stuff yet from this but so far it's been very promising. OH and there are lots of pictures-- very helpful in deciding what to make. We do eat with our eyes first after all. Other things... Now granted, I'm spoiled by the internet and the ability to fluidly sort things with a variety of different requirements so the way that recipes are organized is not exactly to my liking. I prefer to see things organized by protein type over meal type. This book is organized into sections of main meals, slow cooker meals, soups, etc. This is just a nitpick. Anyway, I consider this essential to the Whole30 experience. I did my first one without this cookbook and if I had it back then, it would have been so much easier to plan meals.

Too many salad/ asian dishes
I did 3 rounds of Whole30 last year and started my 4th round on January 1st, so I am not a Whole30 newbie. The recipes are not exactly fast as they rely heavily on buying pre-cut fresh or frozen veggies. Many of the pre-cut frozen veggies in my local stores are not compliant (they may contain non-compliant oils or non-compliant veggies such as corn and peas). Some are also hard to find or really don't exist in a normal grocery store. I can't remember what recipe in here that I noticed that for, but in a salmon patty recipe in the another book it calls for canned sweet potatoes, which is almost impossible to find without added sugar. I made the orange chicken last night and because I had to cut up everything, it took me about 45 minutes and the dish was just okay. Also, I am not a big salad eater and about 1/4 of the book is salads (no surprise there...there are one of the few Whole30 meals that are rather fast and easy). Additionally, another 1/3 of the book is asian inspired recipes and that is my weakest area as a cook. I would have liked to have seen more hearty dishes and crockpot type meals. I used a gift card to buy this cookbook, so I don't regret getting it as there are about 10 recipes I plan on trying (the sheet pan recipes look really good), but I wouldn't pay money for it. If you love salads and asian inspired dishes, this would be an awesome cookbook. I actually think the recipes in the Whole30: The 30 Day Guide to Total Health and Food Freedom are way better. And...if you join Facebook Whole30 groups, people share really good online recipes.
