Review: This is the book you want - I'm one of those who took a year of piano lessons as a kid and then noodled around for decades, struggling through classical pieces but wishing I could play jazz and blues. I've watched Youtube videos that teach an assortment of scales and riffs, but still haven't been able to sit down and just play jazz. This book has been fantastic for me - I'd liken it to a jazz equivalent of the Burgmuller studies. It starts with simple exercises that become a bit more difficult when you force yourself to follow the fingering notations. This has helped my technique, as over the years I've learned to lean on certain mechanics and not developed others. Following each exercise are one or more pieces that are similar enough to the exercise but also enjoyable to listen to. I've been practicing 30 minutes a day and finally feel like jazz is something I could do. I'm starting to realize that the intermediate step to jazz improvisation is the rote learning of a variety of existing pieces, and if you sat down and played through each of the pieces in this book, you'd have a decent beginner's repertoire of very listenable tunes. Review: If you put in the work, this book will take you to the next level. - I took piano lessons as a teenager. Now in my late 50s, I am self-teaching piano. The exercises in this book are great for hand strength, finger independence and for reading sheet music, no matter what type of music you play. Not all the fingerings are given, so you will have to make an effort to figure them out, but that's a good thing. All told, I believe if you are a late beginner or better, are willing to put in a half-hour of practice daily - in addition to your method book practice - this book will take you from good to great. I've been working with this book a short while and can already tell my hands are stronger and my 4th and 5th fingers are more independent. Besides that, the pieces sound beautiful! This is music I would be happy to let other people hear me play. I have put all my other finger exercise books on the shelf. It will take me well over a year to go through this book because I want to master each one. Oscar Peterson did all piano players a huge favor when he wrote this book. There is a reason it has never gone out of print in over 50 years: It is simply the best.

Okay. Some obvious typos/errors in fingering suggestions.
I'm more a classical player than jazz player, and I'm having a hard time hearing the jazz in some of these exercises. I thought they'd be jazzier. But, they are thorough and give you good practice with a variety of techniques, and certainly Oscar knew more about what he was doing than I do, so I trust him. =) Some additional fingering suggestions would've been helpful. I'd rate this for an intermediate to advanced pianist. The exercises aren't all that hard (some beginners could play some of them), but Oscar leaves a lot of figuring out the fingering to the player. I also notice some obvious errors in the fingering suggestions that are there - some suggestions that no player in their right mind would ever use for real fingering - making them blaring errors. This could be a problem for inexperienced pianists who don't know better. however, if you've got some experience, you'll intuit the correct fingering.

Wonderful
Wish there were many more books by Oscar Peterson. For those who say it is easy, that is exactly why this is good because it teaches the basics to people aspiring to play jazz or the blues. I am not sure why someone advanced would need to study chords in a book. Oscar Peterson had so many years teaching, it really shows. Clear, easy to read, good explanations. Really worth the price. Makes piano playing interesting unlike Mary had a little lamb or other music advocated by others.

Great Tunes as Exercises
More than exercises, these are etudes that can be practiced in many jazz and blues rhythms. They are complex enough to catch your ear but start out at a basic level and allow your ear and fingers to advance as you go. I am teaching myself piano, and this is my favorite book of tunes that spark my musical creativity.

Beautiful and interesting pieces
This is very progressive. It certainly isn't for beginners. You need to be able to read notation and come up with some tricky fingerings yourself. It's a great book and I'll be working through it.

Great book for the students who don't like scales, so much --
I have a piano student, who wants to learn how to improvise and accompany at dinner parties-- I had a devil of a time, finding something that would get her to practice more technical stuff-- This book is great, because it helps her apply what she learns when she is here. It is a great book that I use as a sort of technique book, when appropriate. I first have her analyze the exercise-- finding the pattern -- then I show her how she can improvise within the exercise, once she has conquered the exercise. It has gotten her excited about learning the "boring" stuff.

This rating is for Amazon, not Oscar
A great piano book by Oscar Peterson, but Amazon gave me no way to return it when I accidentally ordered it through my Amazon Japan account. So I am stuck with a second digital copy and no easy way to return it.
