Hypericum are a genus of about 400 species of annuals, perennials or shrubs which are noted for producing showy bright yellow flowers with a central mass of bright yellow stamens. They are one of the few s with an almost worldwide taxonomy. Some species of Hypericum have been used since ancient times in the of wounds and inflammations. Many were supposedly burned to ward off evil spirits on the eve of St. John's Day, hence the genus common name of St. John's Wort! Hypericum calycinum is a lovely low creeping shrub often used as an attractive dense cover for low walls, unly gorund etc. Masses of golden yellow, cup shaped flowers with distinct darker tipped anthers, smother this evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub from July to October, creating a wonderful, long-lasting display. The flowers are followed by bright red berries. A great addition for the mixed or shrub border, where it will flourish in either full sun or partial shade. Dense and bushy in habit. This can be used in a mixed ing or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the ents the requires for the whole year.
