'After a lifetime of dabbling in philosophy without tackling logic, I bought a couple of books on the subject and was soon totally lost. This book saved me. ' - desertcart 5 star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'Unlike so many logic books, this one is easy to follow, step by step. Strongly recommended for beginners.' - desertcart 5 star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ When you see black clouds looming and predict it's going to rain, you're using logic. When you decide that all swans are white because all the swans you've seen are white, that's logic too (even though the conclusion is false). As humans we want to understand how things are connected and why, so that we can derive things we don''t know yet from what we do. Logic studies the methods and principles to distinguish good and bad reasoning. This book introduces three basic logical systems: categorical logic, propositional logic and predicate logic. It identifies in each system essential methods to test arguments, and there are illustrations and exercises to enhance your mastery of these skills. By the time you finish you will understand what logicians were thinking when they designed logical systems and start to think like them. Whether you are preparing for an essay, studying for an exam or simply want to expand your knowledge, Logic: A Complete Introduction is your go-to guide. ABOUT THE SERIES The Complete Introduction series from Teach Yourself is the ultimate one-stop guide for anyone wanting a comprehensive and accessible entry point into subjects as diverse as philosophy, mathematics, psychology, Shakespeare and practical electronics. Loved by students and perfect for general readers who simply want to learn more about the world around them, these books are your first choice for discovering something new. Review: Just what I was looking for. Work the examples and exercises. - Just what I was looking for. I find parsing arguments difficult and non-intuitive. The author teaches three systems: categorical, propositional, and predicate logic. She builds gradually, showing how each works and what its limits are. After explaining the principles of each system, she shows how to translate arguments from real language and then test for validity and truth. If you read this book, take your time with it and work all the examples and exercises. I only wish there were more, particularly in the final chapter; they are very helpful. By the end, each system makes sense and I feel ready to apply what I've learned in the real world. There are a few typos in the exercises, but they are easy to spot and, once spotted, actually reinforce that you understand the material. Review: Books a good to engage. - This is a great book for the new learner of logic. By the way, the author replies questions.

Better descriptions would be helpful
It is easy to be overly critical in a review, highlighting the negative aspects of a work while glossing over the positive. It is also common for reviewers to rate something as five stars when it meets their expectations. Given the bias towards higher ratings for meeting expectations, I will rate this book four stars. The book contains a lot of valuable information, and I learned a lot from it, but a few sections lacked clear explanations, so I had to use other resources to supplement those gaps.

This is a very good introduction
This book is well-written and has a good introduction. I hope that the author writes more books on logic and philosophy. I started reading it a year ago, set it aside because of health demands, and have gleefully returned to it. Of course, I recommend it.

Clarity without sacrificing complexity
I am a researcher in religious studies with some self-taught background in philosophy. I just realized recently that the field of logic has advanced greatly, leaving behind many traditional philosophical propositions and modes of reasoning. So I tried to teach modern logic to myself but found it to be very complicated. I am very grateful to have finally come across this book. Professor Lee has a way of making highly complicated concepts understandable, without sacrificing the complexity of academic debates behind controversial issues (these are indeed my focus). I am stunned at the degree to which she can combine clarity with complexity. She is apparently not only a great logician, but also a great teacher. I am grateful for the contributions she has made to the field and to the public.

Good for beginners
The text is easy to read. Everyone can read and understand it. The kindle edition is perfect. Explanations are precisely written. The text is still a little too long. But this is to explain everything. A very good book.

Well written book that fulfill its purpose (Livro muito bem escrito que atende ao seu propósito)
(English) I used this book as a refresher and as an introductory book on logics. Its is definitely a information resource better than those inside introductory mathematical books. My interest concerning this topic came from the study of mathematical proofs, which are essentially applications of deductive logical reasoning.
