MSX was a home computer standard, first announced by Microsoft on June 16, 1983. It arose as a result of the market success of the ZX Spectrum in the United Kingdom. A number of big Japanese electronic companies such as Sony, Sanyo, Sharp, Mitsubishi and Yamaha eventually created or supported MSX systems. It was also popular in South Korea and Brazil. It featured a 20MHz Z80 processor, 512KB RAM, a 1MB ROM and support for SCSI devices. The MSX platform was eventually eclipsed by newer 16-bit and 32-bit systems such as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom. However, it did leave a lasting legacy in Brazil where it remained popular well into the 1990s.
