Use a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable. I bought a short 6 inch cable for less clutter and rest my phone next to the recorder. I record audio off YouTube, but you could use Spotify, Pandora or other sources. A lot of other answers are confusing because the recording you get isn't perfect. It records to blank tapes in mono. Yes it records phone to tape just fine.
