## Description

Apera Instruments PH60 Pocket pH Tester is designed for reliable and easy pH measurement for general water solutions, such as in hydroponics, horticulture, aquaculture, pools& spas, water treatment, cooling towers, environmental monitoring, beverage making, education, etc. The meter comes with a replaceable pH probe (PH60-E) for general water solutions pH test. The meter is also compatible with 3 other types of pH electrodes and an ORP probe (sold separately) for different applications such as solid samples and surface tests. NOTE: Add a few drops of 3M KCL liquid (included in the kit) to their test sample (usually low ion-strength liquid like distilled water or RO water), which will significantly help accelerate the stabilization without affecting the pH reading.

Review: Good tool - Accurate, works well, calibration tools all included. Need to supply your own DI/distilled water but otherwise great
Review: It works, and works well. - I wanted to check the accuracy of the pH sensor our pool had. I also hate using those tester strips which require identifying if the colour is light yellow or pale amber... I mean, really? Plus those strips are calibrated for a specific temperature, so any result you get with them will likely be wrong if your water temp is outside the norm. Anyhow, I hunted around and this seemed to be the one a lot of people recommended. It came in a neat little kit that included everything you needed in a hard shell case - although I'd recommend also buying some extra storage solution as the included amount will not last long. Use is super easy, and it automatically adjusts for temperature. You can also modify the settings so the backlight changes colour if the reading is outside the ideal numbers. I wondered why the case had an empty spot, then I realised that was so you could stand the tester up with the cap filled with storage solution. A really nice touch. If you want to keep it in the case with the lid closed, you just need to remember to store it on the side so there is less chance of leakage from the cap. Keep in mind that if you store it in tap, pool, or distilled water that could damage and permanently impact the accuracy of the tester. They do say that if it is stored dry, then that will also impact the accuracy of the sensor, but this can be fixed by soaking it in storage solution for a few days. Personally, I'd just get the storage solution - it's not expensive, the cap only requires a small amount, and you don't have to replace it after every use so a bottle will last a while. As for accuracy - I don't have a lab quality reference device to test it against, but it definitely appears to be more than accurate enough at least for testing a pool at home. I can't say anything about longevity as I've only had it now for a few weeks, but the sensor is replaceable plus it appears to be well made - so I think it should last well if treated with the care something like this deserves. They do have a newer version of this that has bluetooth and a "new improved sensor". For me this is more than good enough I think, I don't really have any need to track the readings over time, and as much as I am a geek the additional cost didn't really seem to justify it. Overall, very happy with this tester.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: For egular maintanance, does the device /probe must be kept inside a solution or can it be kept inside its case dry?**
A: The latest online instruction manual (version 7.7) says this about storing the PH60 probe:

7 Probe Storage

7.1 Under regular usage (daily or weekly use), make sure the probe cap is wet, and tightly close the cap with the O-ring.

7.2 For long-term storage (you are not going to use the product for a while), add 3M KCL soaking solution to the Fill line in the probe cap and store the probe in it. Close on the probe cap tightly with the O-ring.

7.3 If you find white crystals inside or outside the probe cap, it is perfectly normal. It is the 3M KCL soaking solution that crystalizes over time by its nature. Just rinse them off and add in new soaking solution. This chemical is not poisonous nor dangerous, and the probe’s performance will not be affected at all.

7.4 NEVER store the probe in pure water like tap, RO, distilled, or deionized water as they could damage the pH probe. Pure water is only for rinsing the probe.

**Q: Would this work for chemistry experiments (done as part of a homeschool chemistry course)?**
A: Yes, but advanced warning, we recommend keeping the ph measure above ph of 2 and below a ph of 12 as ph measures beyond those points will shorten the life of the sensor and is considered improper use and voids the warranty.

It may be wise to check in advance if the chemistry course will have the student delving into substances more acidic than lemon juice like HCL, or more alkaline than hand soap. Be sure to have distilled water to rinse all substances away from the probe when testing.

**Q: Looked up the replacement probes. Freaking 35-50 bucks on average. Could just buy a whole new pen for that much? Any cheap replacment probes?**
A: Just replaced my probe on my PH60 after 2.5 years use. Got it in two days, for $28.

**Q: Does this check PPM ?**
A: No, that would be our EC60 and PC60 that will do PPM under the measurement for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). PH60 does only PH and mV for an ORP probe sold separately.

Convenient and precise, easy to use, easy to calibrate, just perfect for monitoring sour dough bread acidity. Controlling the level of pH is much more precise to tell you where your fermentation process stands.
