The Cambridge International Corpus, The Cambridge Learner Corpus などを利用して、初版（2000）を大幅に修正加筆したもの。伝統的な品詞論と統語論からなる。それゆえ、取り立てて新しい理論の展開があるわけでないが、克明に読んでゆくとなるほどと思う指摘が随所にある。たとえば、 Help yourself to a cake, when you want one.
