That's the "logic" of the the product. Thermal temp sensor saves you some energy if you are using a solar generator or limited power source. **Q: How hot does this device get?? Is it safe for plastic containers? Tupperware etc...??** A: It gets hot but does not melt plastic. I have found that the thin plastic containers do better as far as a shorter heat up time, about an hour for a 4x8x2 container with cold leftovers. And mine sit on ice pacs til it’s time for me to heat it up. The glass containers take longer to heat up. One f my co-workers used to heat up frozen TV dinners in it. **Q: At 12v, how many amps does it draw? Will it drain my battery if I let it run with my engine turned off?** A: It doesn't draw 1 amp, it draws about 4 amps. A 40aH battery (40ah is a 'normal car battery) in good condition should be able to heat it for a few hours. 4 amps for 10 hours is 40 amp-hours. So you "should" be able to heat it for 1 hour with the engine off, and have ~90% battery remaining to start the car. And it is thermostatically controlled thus it uses much less power once it gets up to temperature.
