It migrates to the surface during curing, creating an oxygen-blocking wax barrier that ensures a tack-free, fully cured, and sandable finish. Ideal for marine and composite applications, it requires precise dosing (4 oz per gallon) and must be used with MEKP catalyst. This additive streamlines finishing by preventing sticky surfaces and reducing cleanup time. ## Description desertcart.com: Fiberglass Supply Depot Wax Additive - 4 oz Surfacing Agent for use with Gelcoat and Polyester resins : Sports & Outdoors ## Features - Creates a tack-free surface: Wax additives mixed into gelcoat help eliminate the sticky surface caused by air exposure, allowing the gelcoat to cure fully and be sanded or polished once cured - Used only in final/top coats: Add the wax additive only to the final gelcoat layer (or final polyester resin layer) — do not add to intermediate layers that need bonding. - How it works: The wax (often paraffin or styrene-based) migrates to the surface during cure, forming a thin barrier that blocks oxygen and lets the resin cure hard all the way to the surface. - Dosage matters: Typical ratios are around 1 oz per quart or ~4 oz per gallon of gelcoat — too much can cause defects like “fish eyes” or uneven finish. - Catalyst still required: Wax additive doesn’t replace hardener — you still must add the correct amount of MEKP catalyst to gelcoat for polymerization to occur. - Terminology: These products are often called wax additive, surfacing agent, or surface seal for gelcoat/polyester resin. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B077GYBNP1 | | Best Sellers Rank | #24,405 in Automotive ( See Top 100 in Automotive ) #123 in Waxes | | Brand | Fiberglass Supply Depot | | Brand Name | Fiberglass Supply Depot | | Customer Reviews | 4.7 out of 5 stars 387 Reviews | | Item Form | Liquid | | Item Weight | 4 ounces | | Manufacturer | Eclipse | | Number of Items | 1 | | Recommended Uses For Product | For Polishing, For Paint Protection | | Specific Uses For Product | Surface Treatment, Sealant | | UPC | 819794020329 | | Unit Count | 4 Ounce | ## Product Details - **Brand:** Fiberglass Supply Depot - **Item Form:** Liquid - **Item Weight:** 4 ounces - **Recommended Uses For Product:** For Polishing, For Paint Protection - **Specific Uses For Product:** Surface Treatment, Sealant ## Images ![Wax Additive - 4 oz Surfacing Agent for use with Gelcoat and Polyester resins - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61YcXReONGL.jpg) ## Questions & Answers **Q: Can you pre-mix this with a quart of non-waxed gelcoat to effectively make it waxed gelcoat? and use as much as you need out of the an with mekp ?** A: Yes you can do that. If you need to do two coats do the first one with no wax then add your wax to the last coat. That way you don't have to sand in between coats. **Q: how much gelcoat will the 4oz treat** A: 4oz will do 1 gallon of gelcoat. You would generally use 1oz per quart or 4oz per gallon. **Q: can you use this with epoxy resin?** A: I use this for gelcoat on a bass boat , Gel coat will not cure to a hard finish unless seal from outside air , it will stay tacky, you mix this in with a batch and during the process of curing it comes to the surface and seals it and allows it to harden properly, I dont think you need it with epoxy resin because it hardens without it . **Q: The top of the can is sealed with a metal cap and says to cut this out. What's the best way to do this?** A: Usually take a little flathead screw driver and poke the lid with it and it will pop out. ## Frequently Bought Together - Wax Additive - 4 oz Surfacing Agent for use with Gelcoat and Polyester resins - TotalBoat-488419 Marine Gelcoat for Boat Building, Repair and Composite Coatings (White, Quart No Wax) - TotalBoat Polyester Laminating Resin - Marine Grade Fiberglass Resin and MEKP Catalyst for Layups and Repairs (Gallon) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.co/products/56575482-wax-additive-4-oz-surfacing-agent-for-use-with-gelcoat](https://www.desertcart.co/products/56575482-wax-additive-4-oz-surfacing-agent-for-use-with-gelcoat) --- *Product available on Desertcart Colombia* *Store origin: CO* *Last updated: 2026-11-06*
