Review: Wonderful, Nourishing, Satisfying Recipes - Help For Suffering - I LOVE this cookbook! I go to it all the time. I love trying the recipes because they all turn out so well. These are seriously well put together recipes with very clear instructions. I also enjoyed reading the whole book and learning about their journey. I was reading the GAPS diet book by McBride with the plan of immplementing it for our daughters with autism. In the middle of reading it I began to have severe stomach distress. I had had some distress off and on for a couple of years but this pain was dibilitating and I was mostly fasting, because my stomach hurt so badly. I thought I would just go on McBride's diet suggestions when I came across this book and bought it immediately. The timing was perfect and I went through almost all the steps in the cookbook. The nourishment and healing were exceptional after I had been in that much pain and having mostly fasted for a week. I was scared to hurt again and the pace was perfect. This book made the diet so much easier. I do recommend reading McBride's book first if you are following the GAPS diet closely. It will make the diet aspect more clear. Hilary Boynton also recommends it. The recipes! They are so excellent! It has become my favorite cookbook and I have a lot of cookbooks. The fish soups are wonderful! We all love fish soup now. "Halibut in Lemon Thyme Broth" and "Coconut Curry Fish Stew" are two recipes that we have tried and love. All 10 of us. That is saying something. My husband's favorite recipes are "Creamy Cabbage 'Casserole' with Chicken Thighs" and "Mexican Chicken Hearts". The kids really like them too. The cabbage and chicken thighs "soup" tastes even better a day or two later after all the flavors have blended and it is such an easy recipe. He also loves the "Hot Nicky" fermented hot sauce. The salmon patties- delicious! I've made many other recipes and have more recipes on my list to try. The very best things about these recipes is that after you eat them, you feel so nourished, very satisfied, and well. Many, many thanks, Hilary Boynton!! Review: Great recipes! Beautiful book!! Makes the GAPS Diet a breeze! - This book has been amazing! I had read the actual GAPS book cover to cover, took notes, underlined, highlighted, and read and re-read. It wasn't until I had this book, Heal Your Gut, that I was actually able to follow through with the intro diet. This book is just what I needed! Having attempted the GAPS diet 3 times and being unable to get further than a few days, I was about ready to call it quits. I just couldn't figure out what to eat and was getting tired of boiled meatballs. I preordered this book without knowing anything about it, but not really having any other gaps books available to me. I am so glad that I did!! I read the book cover to cover! It's beautiful, well laid out, and perfectly structured to walk you through the GAPS diet. I can't thank these women enough for writing it! Not only has it helped me, but it has also helped my 22 month old son in healing our guts and finally being able to properly absorb all the nutrients from the foods we've been eating. After a few rounds of antibiotics as a newborn, my sons gut was wrecked and he needed major gut repair. He ate every single meal that I made for him after following these recipes!! That is huge for a toddler!! He rarely ate anything I'd try to feed him without putting up a fight. With this book.. Success!! The recipes in this book are delicious and very easy to follow. You will be flying through the gaps intro with ease if you take the time to read this book and follow along with each stage. I can honestly say I never felt deprived. And I actually felt like it was Thanksgiving each day with all the great meals my son and I were getting to eat each day. My particular favorites on the intro were the turmeric and mushroom leek soups. I'd never cooked with either and now I really love those foods. So thankful for this book!! :) can't say thank you enough!!

I am so glad I did
I read through the GAPS diet book twice over the past 5 years. The information in GAPS is convincing, but the application section is lacking. I am not the kind of woman who enjoys spending time in the kitchen & couldn't really make GAPS work, other than drinking more chicken stock. I decided to give this diet another go & bought this book. I am so glad I did! This cookbook has made GAPS intro a breeze for me & my family. We've been on the intro about 4 or 5 weeks now & will be entering into full GAPS soon. The recipes are easy, we have soup every day. I double or triple the recipes to freeze extra soup so I'm not living in the kitchen, but even so, I've actually been enjoying cooking since we began this diet. We've been fully organic for over 10 years, but this food is just so nourishing that it seems worth my time and effort. I imagine we will be eating GAPS forever, the food is just so healthy & tasty & easy to prepare. Of course, we will occasionally eat other things, but GAPS will be our foundation.

This is an amazing cookbook! It delivered me from mediocrity after struggling through months of bland and boring GAPs on my own. The recipes are simple, gourmet, and delicious. There are many ideas in it to help keep the diet frugal, nourishing, and full of flavorful variety. The guide to preparing the core foods (culturing, fermenting, soaking, etc.) is super helpful too. As a bonus, it's full of beautifully photographed photos and step by step instructions. Wonderful, must-have resource for all GAPs dieters!

Good Overall and Helpful Information - Would buy it again
This was a good book to help get me started on the GAPS diet. Pros: Lays out the GAPS diet. Gives a lot of information about the GAPS diet to help get you started. Great recipe ideas. Cons: The author has not gone into all the foods allowed on the Full GAPS diet so there may be some holes as you progress (this is not the end of the world but just so you know) It is a good book overall. I used it to get me through the beginning of the GAPS process and enjoyed seeing the different foods to make it helped during that time when I was really feeling "blah" in the detox period. I didn't use all the recipes but I did enjoy seeing how things could be prepared. It was nice to know she has used these foods on her husband and kids. I consulted this book more than my GAPS book and I would definitely would buy this again and recommend it to my friends that are trying the GAPS diet.

Amazing, even if you don’t “need” it!
I don’t even know where to start! I’ve only made two things out of the cookbook: the taco seasoning and the Hot Nicky. Wow! I made taco bowls tonight. I used the taco seasoning in a cassava slurry with leftover roasted chicken. The Hot Nicky is straight fruits and vegetables (literally the only ingredients!) and it is freakin’ killer! This cookbook, even if you aren’t remotely interested in following GAPS, is a must have for cooking with whole foods. The flavors I tasted tonight are perfectly suited to fresh, real food. I can’t wait to march my way through these recipes! Also, I had the distinct pleasure of eating Hilary’s cooking for 5 days last week. I attended a Take Back Your Health retreat with my mom. The food was nourishing and simultaneously delicious! Hilary’s skill in the kitchen is inspiring. She pours love and flavor into everything she touches. Eating her food and possessing this cookbook has re-ignited my love for food and for my body. Please, buy this cookbook. You will not regret it.

Helpful
This book is ok - I debated between 3 and 4 stars. If you don’t know how to ferment food, soak nuts, make yogurt, etc, it may be very helpful. Already knowing those techniques, I found a good bit of it not too helpful. Many of the recipes are either extremely basic (scrambled eggs? fried eggs? really?) or fairly basic/intuitive - things anyone who isn’t a beginner may very well make up based on what they have in the fridge. A lot of the ones that aren’t basic depend on each other - by that I mean you need to make 3 or 4 of the condiments or ferments or sauces from the cookbook before you can make the main recipe. To some extent, the GAPS diet sort of just works that way and things need to be homemade, but there are very few recipes you can decide to make at the last minute. Nearly every one needs considerable planning ahead. This last one is just personal taste, but I found the tone very jarring. Some of it was professional and helpful, but then additions of very odd and dated bits of slang thrown in (psyched? That really brought me back about 20 years - I had truly forgotten what it meant!) that really deviate from the general cookbook-y type tone. All that said, I’m glad to have the book and have made some yummy things from it. If you are just starting GAPS you may especially appreciate it. But the more experienced you are in fermenting and GAPS cooking the less you will probably find it helpful.

A Must-Read for GAPS Eaters!
This book has been invaluable as I begin my GAPS journey. As wonderful as Dr. Cambell-McBride's Gut & Psychology Syndrome book is, the formatting does not lend itself to people who would like step-by-step instructions in easy-to-read format. For anyone beginning a new journey, you will probably need to refer to your reference materials on a daily basis. Enter The Heal Your Gut Cookbook - a perfect companion! Hillary Boynton breaks down each stage with simple personal anecdotes, and clear recipes. I was easily able to shop and plan for each new stage in the Intro Stages, by reading ahead to see which recipes she recommends, and which foods are added. I also felt empowered to craft so many new recipes, which is a big deal even for me, an experienced gluten-free and semi-paleo cook/baker. Despite the fact that, prior to GAPS, I had been eating healthfully for years, there are quite a few things one must eliminate even further for Full GAPS. These recipes take out the hard work, and are giving me the tools to further curate my personal repertoire, so I can continue to feed myself deliciously. I am so thankful for this book!!!!!

Anyone doing GAPS needs this book!
Just received this amazing book. Love the pictures showing how to make things like yoghurt, ghee and but based crackers. I already know how to make ghee but its got lovely pictures. The book is set in the stages so really helpful. I will be using this to help my autistic 2 1/2 year old. Worth mentioning it also gives you a run down of what you will need to do the diet. Equipment and pantry items. Very very good cook book.
