## Description

THE ULTIMATE IN ALIEN TERROR Over the years, star Kurt Russell and master of horror John Carpenter have teamed up on a multitude of films (Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from New York to name a few) but of all their collaborations, 1982 s horror/sci-fi amalgam The Thing surely tops the list. A research team based out in the snowy wilds of Antarctica find themselves besieged by a terrifying, shape-shifting creature which has found its way into their base. When it becomes clear that the creature can take the form of any organism it so chooses, the tension within the team reaches breaking point any one of them could be... The Thing. Critically panned at the time of its release, John Carpenter s The Thing has rightly gone on to become one of the most celebrated sci-fi horror efforts ever made now newly restored by Arrow Video in a stunning 4K transfer supervised by Carpenter and director of photography Dean Cundey BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS

Review: 'In Antarctica no one can hear you scream.' - I've lost count how many times I've watched this movie. That in itself tells you that I'm a big fan of 'The Thing' (1982). The film takes place at an isolated American Research Station in Antarctica and concerns the infiltration of an alien-thing onto the base that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. Very quickly the 12 inhabitants find themselves being taken over by the Thing, leading to a situation where nobody knows who is human and who has been assimilated and transformed into a perfect human imitation. This awkward situation drives a wedge between the 12 men and creates a sense of paranoia and deep mistrust, with each man constantly looking over his shoulder through fear that he is the next to be assimilated. 'The Thing' is reminiscent of Agatha Christie's 1939 novel 'And Then There Were None' in which the cast of characters are killed off until there is only one person left. There are also echoes of Ridley Scott's 1979 movie 'Alien' which explores similar themes of isolation and mistrust but in outer space. The tagline used to promote the film 'Alien - 'In space no one can hear you scream' - could easily have been used to promote 'The Thing', except the word 'space' would have been substituted for 'Antarctica'. It is this sense of extreme isolation in 'The Thing' that gives the film its edginess. Out there all alone in the cold, desolate wasteland, you know that the only way these men have the slightest chance of surviving is to stick together and cooperate, but the Thing will have none of it. 'The Thing' is pretty bleak but Kurt Russell's character, R.J. Macready, does a commendable job at trying to keep the group together and navigate them out of the mess they're in. John Carpenter directs and Ennio Morricone creates a creepy musical score to enhance the sense of dread and trepidation. Mention, too, must go to Rob Bottin's special effects which were nominated for an Oscar, although lost out to Carlo Rambaldi who won for 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'. 'The Thing' bombed at the box office, with many complaining that it was "nihilsitic and despairing" but over the years the film has developed a solid cult following and is now considered a classic of the Science-Fiction and horror genres. Give it a watch . . . if you dare?
