Children really enjoyed the vibrant colours and many just did on the go amazing master pieces. I never really used pastels myself, but its nice experience and i really enjoyed the range of the colours. I wwould love to see more basic coulours more than one in the pack such as skin colours and white for blending. On down side, its breaking easily especially then paper cover removed. Dont know if thats the mature of the pastel. I have bought several packages for children to use and i see good value. These pastels invite children to draw. I don't believe these can be blended with water. They are softer than a crayon and oil based. Once a picture is drawn, a person can rub with a finger or paper towel to blend colors together (smudging). Hope that helps. **Q: how washable are these? hands, clothing, surfaces? appropriate for smaller children?** A: They come of of hands easy enough, however I wouldn't expect oil pastels to come out of clothing easily.
